Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
Having started on my Deep One army in earnest, I discovered both just how small of a head a Lictor has, and just how ripped the Daemon Prince model is.
For the sake of my sanity, the wings will be painted separately and glued on at the end.
And did anyone else notice that the Daemon Prince model is sporting a thong?

Working on beefing up Cthulhu's wings tonight, partially for cool points, partially so they sit just a bit further away from the body so painting goes easier.
Of course, the dilemma that occurs whenever one works with Green Stuff is "what do I do with that little bit that's always left over?" In the case of manly-man Cthulhu, you give him bigger pecs!

Save for basing, Cthulhu is now assembled and INCREDIBLY back heavy.

I like what you are doing with the theme.
I don't like how far from the model the wings sit... It looks very unproportional... :S

It does look a touch off in the photos, but if you think of the physics of biological flight it would need the additional leverage to be anything more than cosmetic. The biggest thing behind doing it, though, was to let me paint the body without the wings getting in the way.
I'm thinking of going with a stone slab with the Elder Sign carved into it with kelp around the edge of the base.

Re: Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
daemon princes have super light bone structure like birds only made out of magic and moonbeams. no need to bring physics into the conversation.
i mean none of the imperial flyers have the wingspan to maintain flight... or engines large enough to maintain hover.. but most of them can do both!

I still think the increased span makes the wings look more imposing. If I were to do a daemon prince like this again, I think I'd try to splay them out more to the sides, all unfurled and intimidating. Like some of the Forge World Tyranid flier models.

One of the other reasons I snagged those Shock Trooper boxes: guns for my gills! I notice that the gun arm wants to hug in close to the chest. Nothing some carving or Green Stuff can't fix.
Luckily, these guys take advantage of the slot in the base.

I like slotted bases, makes standing up dudes so much easier.
Also, I love Gun-Lizardmen cultists!!

Snagged two boxes of basic Chaos Space Marines after the tourney so I could start converting my Plague Marine squads. I had one made already, so I just need to build 13 more, leaving me 7 dudes to turn into Havoks. Generally trying to keep these guys as WYSIWYG as I can, but that Plague Knife can be a bugger to work in. Second from the left is the champion, hence the power axe.

More Plague Marine work. I'm thinking about painting the heads separately and attaching them at the end.

Re: Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
It has come to my attention that the Spore Pods I ordered to convert into Obliterators are tall. Rather tall.
For table top usage, this could be a problem, with the whole "modeling to advantage" thing. However, problems breed solutions.
The plan is now to slice the trailing tendrils in half (pardon the bad sketch, using a mouse this morning) and using Green Stuff to make a new "head" for the lower tendrils, thus yielding me 6 Obliterators where I otherwise would have only had 3.
I do find myself with a different problem now, though. Thus far all my units, both started and not, have been able too work into the underwater theme, by Deep One motif or otherwise. Currently I have the following planned out:
With the left over bits from building the Plague/Noise Marines, I had planned to build a 5 man Havok squad, but I'm running fresh out of ideas as how to tie them into to this nautical theme. I know they probably aren't super critical to my list building, but they feel like a useful squad to have. Any ideas as to what other waterlogged tie-ins could be used? The only other thing I could think of was deep sea divers/Big Daddy, but 28mm scale diver helmets are near impossible to find.

- Fishmen Cultists
- Cthulhu Prince
- Eel Prince
- Jellyfish Oblits
- Hermit Crab Mutilators
- Dr. Strangelove style torpedo Bikers
- Flying Dutchmen Noise Marines (with a ghost ship rhino, if I can swing it)
- Kraken Heldrake
- Shogoth Helbrute
- Possibly a giant Hermit Crab Mauler Fiend

Re: Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
Hobby World helped me to find a Spanish Galleon model of roughly the right scale to convert into a ghost ship rhino, and it should be coming in sometime in early march. I think I'm going to hold up on posting up pics of the Noise Marines, because until I get them fully painted they're just going to look like black primed fantasy minis.
Still struggling with a theme tie in for the Havoks, though I think I want to give them the FW Legion Autocannon kit to work with. Belt feed from the back pack being awesome and all.
Current build progress:
I also have the Slaughter Brute kit here, waiting to be turned into a Mauler Fiend. I was thinking about doing all kinds of scaffolding with wire to support segments of Milliput, but then I remembered that I kept some bricks of Styrofoam in the garage to build terrain with. I'll just cut a chunk off of that, carve that into the rough shape I need, and give that a coating of Milliput before I go in with Green Stuff for detail work.

Current build progress:
- 14 Plague Marines (10 sans head)
- 1 Cthulhu Prince
- 1 Typhus (still needed additional work on his base)
- 3 Noise Marines

Re: Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
Started work on my spin on the Mauler Fiend tonight. Using the Slaughter Fiend as a base, I'm going to use some Styrofoam and modeling putty to give it a shell. I mounted some magnets inside the chest using Green Stuff so I can swap between Magma Cutters and Lasher Tendrils. The heads this kit comes with are super awesome, but I think I'm going to hold them in reserve for another project, opting instead for the actual Mauler Fiend head.

Working with Styrofoam is horribly messy business, but it's easier than scaffolding, and will give me a solid core to work with. I can work on rounding it out tomorrow out in the garage where a mess will be minded less.

if your going to work in foam, the stuff they use for flower arrangements is finer and more easily moulded. (though admittedly more expensive than your average packing grade foam)

The Slaughterbrute kit has a second set of arms coming out of it's chest, which is where I was planning on mounting swapable Magma Cutters/Lasher Tendrils. I would use the arms from the kit for the Magma Cutters, and a pair of Tendrils from the Mauler Fiend kit as Tendrils.

Re: Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
Doing the Dremel carving in the garage seems to have been the right call, as I ended up doing quite the snowman impression by the end of it.
The remaining flat spots can be rounded out once the Milliput layer is applied

I seem to have discovered, whilst idly playing around with an LED tea light and a knife, that said tea light is the same width as a terminator base. This ensued.
I think an interesting basing possibility just became available to me.

Re: Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
Basic Milliput coating has been applied. Once it finishes curing I can add in some more around the "entry" to the shell . I will also need to do some Green Stuff to fill in the missing bit of belly and guts, as the large gap there is where the pelvis and legs in the kit are meant to go. On a related note, some high density foam was donated to me today, and I will be giving that a try for filling out the basic form of my Kraken. I am entirely too excited for the prospect of shouting out "RELEASE THE KRAKEN" on turn 2 when it flies on the board.

Re: Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
Today was not very conducive to working on the Mauler Fiend, so I sat down and putzed around with the Helbrute. Reaper Autocannon (to have Nid heads applied as gargoyles once I can fire up the Dremel) and Missile Launcher. Green spheres scattered across the body will be eyes to help tie into the Shogoth idea. The face everyone hates has been converted into a maw with a tongue/eye stalk coming out of it.
