The Astronomicon Planning Thread
Post here if you're planning to go.
I'm 90% committed at this point. I'm pretty sure Brian's a go.
We just need 2 more people and we can start booking stuff and figure out driving logistics.

vehicle is probably the next question. right now i'm between useful vehicles. so all i have to offer is a vw golf. its more than up for the trip. but i've never been in the back seat, so... yeah.

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
I dunno if I have a vehicle available, one is a fiesta, which is tiny and would hold all of two people, the other is a ford focus wagon, but its a 07 with a fair bit of miles on it. I would just be concerned with the wagon with how many continuous hours of driving we'd be doing.

I'm fine with a small back seat, if I take a driving shift, it might be an issue

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
depending on everyone's finances, i can probably rent a vehicle for around $50 a day. its an option and we'd end up with a Nissan maxima or something. which is a reasonably large vehicle for a road trip and not real bad on fuel.

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
I'd probably suggest the rent-a-vehicle option. Just so someone doesn't feel like they got the wrong end of the stick. That way the cost is obvious and we can split it accordingly.

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
$50 each for rental + Gas (which I'm betting would be another $50 each)
~$150 for 3 night's at the Gage, which includes breakfast, another ~$60 for 3 days of food (we could probably be cheaper... the Gage has a full kitchen too)
$95 registration for the event (did I read that right?)
We're looking at a $400 each expense, drops by only $50 if we use one of our cars.
Mike, we won't pay a bunch extra for putting 3600km on a vehicle?

Vancouver.
Edit: The 3600km (1700 + city driving and back) should've been a clue :-)

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
Just checking...
That looks really cool...
I would be interested in driving if you guys split gas and could help driving (I know you ((Mark+Mike)) Drive) 16 hours, split 3 ways shouldn't be too bad. My Civic seats 4 comfortably and 5 squishedly. And we can probably fit 4 armies+food in the back seat.

At 5 people, I think we'd need two cars, or 3 more people.

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
Going to Calgary a few times with 3 people is a stretch. Models take up the most room then a bag for clothes etc.. pikes.up quick.
I would have loved to come.. but 16 hours two ways in a car is to.much for.me. Now.. if ypu had an RV so we could olay games the whole way.. Bam.
I would be 100% game for Astro winnipeg though next winter.

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
i would use a business account for the vehicle and let them know the itinerary. the rental companies have cars that they use for such things, so the mileage shouldn't be a big issue. I'll make some calls today or tomorrow and get some hard numbers.
My Golf has reasonable room, but i'm worried about trunk space. you got 4 smelly guys that need at least 4 days worth of underwear and t-shirts on top of transporting army cases full of models. my equinox is a lease unfortunately and putting 3600km on it is a no-go.

Also if you guys haven't been following the flood news from alberta you guys may have to go through edmonton or further south due to highway one being washed out at canora so that might add some time

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
So, vehicle.
i can rent a nissan ultima from enterprise for $35/day plus $15 insurance/day. i wont take the vehicle without the insurance as its just idiocy not to. (includes roadside assistance and bumper-bumper, windshield, etc) so i was right on the money with $50/day.
we can move up to an SUV for an extra $10/day. but i'm not sure its necessary and the fuel bill will be higher as well.

Re: The Astronomicon Planning Thread
Sedan would be good for you, Brian, Tom M, and I. I'd leave it to other potential attendee's to secure travel. I'm 99% good to go, only potential kink is if I obtain gainful employment that might conflict.
Adam, if you're coming too, I'd recommend waiting (or encouraging ) 2 or 3 others to come to help split travel costs. Once people have firmed up, I'll call The Gage and see if I can sweeten the deal for us a bit more, or at least get us all in the same "appartment".
