Re: What's a good necron tactic
Imotekh works best in big games where there's lots of targets for his lightning.
Also, you can stand him in the front of the unit so that you can take his 2+/3++ save instead of on the warriors. Once he loses a wound, you can start taking "Look Out Sir!" rolls.
He's good, but a destroyer lord he's not. (Destroyer Lords are ahmazeing)

Re: What's a good necron tactic
Spyders work best when you have more bases available to spawn, ie: start with 3 and have another 3 off to the side for when your spawning phase rolls around.
The Necron Battleforce will do much to help out your army, giving you a Ghost Ark and more Warriors and Scarabs, letting you do something like a 20 man Warrior squad backed by a 6 man squad in a Ghost Ark and another 6 off to the side trying to hold a back field objective or flank around an enemy.
Aside from that, with Imotekh, the best use of him I have found thus far is to sit your army as far away from the enemy as possible, focusing your shooting on whatever advances into your range while the Lightning deals with everything else.

Re: What's a good necron tactic
The problem with the battleforce is that it comes with Destroyers, which are horrible. (Don't let anyone tell you different). I suppose you could convert two into destroyer lords.... but even then. If you want to play Imotekh based lists, your next investment should be an Annihilation Barge.
Edit: My bad! It doesn't come with Destroyer's any more. It's a pretty good deal, with a bunch of warriors, 5 deathmarks, and a ghost ark. Don't build the Doomsday Ark, they're terrible.
(There are three nigh unusable things in the Necron Codex, Flayed Ones, Doomsday Arks, and Destroyers (Heavy and otherwise))
Things that are just "average" are Szeras, That time guy (Orikan?), and C'Tan.
Everything else is over-powered (if used properly) | Have fun :-)

Scarabs are amazing when they connect, being able to one-shot most metal boxes they touch. They're great as tar pits, as well.

Re: What's a good necron tactic
Um the necron battleforce comes with 5 immortal/benchmarks, a bunch o warriors and scarves and a ghost ark. No destroyers.
Edit: didn't read. Looking at denyrys's boobs on game of thrones.
Heavy d's have to be at least decent. A lascannon with a jump pack?

Heavy Destroyers are great, especially since they're jump las cannons with Preferred Enemy (EVERYTHING!) letting you re-roll those pesky 1's when shooting at the flesh bags. Where they fall apart is the 60 point price tag. If they were 2 wounds each, I think that point value wouldn't hurt as much going down.

Re: What's a good necron tactic
Heavy Destroyers are T5, one wound, in small units, with a 3+ armour save, for the low low price of 60 points a guy. When you lose 'em to one round of shooting and cough up first blood...
Now, if you took a unit of 5, with three heavies, for 260 points (almost the same as 3 Annihilation Barges), you have 5 models with one wound...
They're terrible.

Re: What's a good necron tactic
wouldn't a destroyer lord going with destroyers make them ok? just have him to soak up hits while they put out the hurt with shooting.

Re: What's a good necron tactic
Yeah but a wraith can move through cover and difficult terrain and can't be slowed down so it is like a fast attack that can't be stopped and a destroyer is OK
But in my opinion they are only good if u want to lay fire and not go into close combats (which is most of the troops!)
And wraiths and few others are very good at close can ate like wraiths and a few others
I haven't played but I have mainly heard negative stuff about them so I'm trying to stay away from them

Re: What's a good necron tactic
Eh, 180 points for three Heavy Destroyers, then another 160 points for a Destroyer Lord that doesn't really get to do it's thing while baby sitting... Points could be much better spent.

Yeah also it is 340 points that's alot for only 3 heavy and 1 lord when that could be spent on warriors

Re: What's a good necron tactic
I was gonna lay it out for Jessie there, but no need!
Destroyers suck. They all suck. Suck. 40 points for a 1 wound T5 model with 2 S5 shots at 24"... eh...
A 23 point Thousand Son is better... and even those are terrible.
The only thing Destroyers are good for is turning into Destroyer Lords.
Destroyer Lords can soak up hits for Wraiths too... or Praetorians (which are just "average", although they won Paz $100).

Re: What's a good necron tactic
Annihilation Barge. It's a fantastic $40 (ish) kit that'll get you one of the best units in the game (the Annihilation Barge!) and a Necron Overlord on Foot, which is a handy little guy to have.
Edit: Annihilation Barges are decent anti-flyer as well.

Ghost Ark is great, though for it's price and your collection status I'd recommend getting it by meaning of the Battleforce.

Re: What's a good necron tactic
All the Battleforces are about $130-150.
A Battleforce and an Annihilation Barge is a great place to start for a Necron army. You'll have an extra Overlord, 20 odd warriors, a unit of deathmarks, some scarabs, an Annihilation Barge and an Ghost Ark. Plus whatever you already have. That'd run you about $200 total
