n00b question about Grey Knights

How do Psychotrop (spelling?) Grenades work?
When I played against Mike he rolled a "5" against my scarabs and nothing memorable happened. I thought those were the "make an initiative check or your dudes hit themselves" thingies.
A related joke for your time... What did the solipsist say while he was getting beat up? "Why are you hitting yourself?"

They do random things.. that can change a combat dramatically..
1 - nothing
2 - enemy is automatically hit.. you dont have to roll.. plus, when the enemy attacks they only get one attack back
3 - You get to reroll all misses against the enemy units
4 - Enemy unit is leadership 2
5 - Enemy units go at unit 1
6 - all enemy units make an initiatiive test. If they fail, they resolve all attacks agains ttheir own unit.
So, you being bumped down to init 1 really meant nothning. I had a techmarine with psycho and rad grenades assault a unit of scarabs when I played paz.. he was with 4 dc assassins and 4 crusaders. I think I rolled a 3, rad grenades decrease your tgh by 1 for the first round of combat.. so every hit from the death cult assassins that were with him were removing a base.. they had 4 attacks each with power weapons.. no one else got to go. It was really mean.. and I felt really dirty doing it. But.. those scarabs are also damn scary.

wouldnt they still count as tgh 3 for the purposes of "double strength instant kills"...? it would be a 3(2). i mean if it works the other way, for increases to Toughness, still dieing to double its base tough. it should certainly work inversly as well.

You're forgetting the all-important Golden Rule. If a rule can interpreted against Tyranids it will be, and for Grey Knights it will be. I believe the toughness reduction does affect instant death for whatever reason. I agree it makes no sense, but hey we should be used to that by now.
