idea for Vulkan conversion
I want to add Vulkan to my army at some point, but I do all my vanilla marines as Ultramarines. I've already done a Kantor and Shrike conversion (from the Commander box for the former and the Sicarius/Medusa mini from WD a few years back. Anyways, I have 2 idea for how to do the conversion:
1) SM Commander box with a GK Nemisis Force halberd and a dreadnaught flamer attached to the power fist. Also would use Sicarius's crested helm.
2) GK Terminator brother captain (from the boxed set) with the incinerator arm.
I think the first will look more "Ultramarine-y" while the second would be a much easier conversion. (Basically just a paint job)
Opinions?

I like the sound of the first conversion better.

since he's artificer armor on a 28mm base, i'd take your first choice. no sense increasing his size and base by using the terminator body.
Re: idea for Vulkan conversion
I'd consider that pretty much unanimous. Also cheaper considering I have all the bits in my bit box.

Re: idea for Vulkan conversion
Wow... I knew there was a reason that I don't read the books that shroud this hobby in a mountain of crap. Seriously? Sgt Superman and his Bestie go around the universe destroying brood mothers (tm dragon age) and because of his large size he was forced to wear larger armor, although why a clone of the emperor would be larger than another is a little strange, but at least it's not as strange as why terminator armor would be larger on the inside just because it's larger on the outside, when ascending from wearing power armor to wearing terminator armor do space marines hit some kind of magic space puberty that makes them fill out the extra space that's apparently present in terminator armor or do they kinda flop around like a hand in a large glove? Also... how do you escape god? I mean Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker had some pretty close calls in Rush Hour (my heart stopped once) but they never fought a C'Tan that apparantly cut off Jackies arm and then giggled instead of consuming his soul, like seriously ya the hero of the story has to be tough, but my brain struggles to imagine a character tough enough to stare down a god born out of a sun that feeds on sentient beings and merely get his arm cut off before his best bud yells "Chewy we need to get the hell outta here, lukes been messed up pretty bad, haven't you got the hyper drive fired up yet?" Also... if it's such a big secret that his arm is made out of dead necrons that failed their phase out roll, does he kill the guy that glues it on him? because that's a pretty big loose end when you're trying to keep a secret from the emperor, and only you, your bestie, and a 30 man surgical team know the secret.
However of course this dynamic buddy cop duo would have to be suspended from the force because if you do anything too heroic while serving the space marines they take your badge away... I mean exile you, luckily they have spare guns cuz when they have to turn in their gun and their badge and go to angst filled strip club scene to talk about what they're gonna do to get back on the force it would suck to get attacked by tyranids. Turns out killing Iron Warriors with some renegades will get you a plate of hot food back at the ultramarine's sorority, but maybe that's the space marines problem, just like the police, nothing gets done unless you're suspended without pay... I mean exiled. So after a few explosions and great one liners from support character Uriel like, "That is one ugly mother-" and "Dude! Wheres your arm?" they come back to the dorms and are told, "great job dynamic duo you really saved are butts back there, I don't like it but here's your badge back, but while you were out I got my teeth cleaned and the dentist said he helped the surgical team with your arm, and because you didn't tell us about it I'm not letting you take part in any of the underwear pillow fights for 100 days"
The end, or is it?

Re: idea for Vulkan conversion
nice to see someone else finds the homemade fluff some people write and post online to be as much trash as i do. i read that link about 3 or 4 lines into it and it was just complete garbage. really? terminator armour cause he was too big? really? yes, SOME marines are taller than others, ie a head and shoulder above a fellow brother marine, but they STILL. WEAR. POWER ARMOR. thats like saying when the army gets a 6'4 recruit, we give it the master chief's mjolnir armor cause they made him too damn big back in the farmer's fields, so a standard issue set of fatigues wont cut it.
excuse me, i have to go vomit now to purge my system of the complete garbage that is fan-made Ultramarine fluff, and then choke out a few babies cause it was so bad it made a little voice inside my head tell me to do it.

Re: idea for Vulkan conversion
I wish I could get paid for homemade fluff like Graham McNeil does:) I enjoy the writing for what it is (literary junkfood) but according to him, the 4th company is all basically supermen. I imagine some ppl are happy after the end of the last book.
That said I like the characters of Uriel and Pasanius. I've never cared for the complete and total brainwashing bit about SM. I find them much more interesting with at least SOME human emotion/soul.
On a modeling note: I like the look of the conversion, except for the Chest and shoulder pads. I think it needs to look more "tactical-ish".

sorry for the grainy pic, here's the mock-up...
I have to play with the PF/HF a bit to make sure the hoses look ok. Will probably use a different banner, most likely the terminator banner with an Iron Halo on top.
Thoughts?

Better pics
The hose from the heavy flamer actual matches to the backpack rather well. Left arm is staying put, minus minor tinkering. Thinking of adding a multi-melta tank from a landspeeder to the backpack, but I'm going to get the rest of him together first.
Should I raise the right arm, so he's holding it more like a banner? (Actually I think it will be more like the company champ's "Thundercat's HO" pose) The current position gives the piece some movement, like he's reacting, having it upright will be a more static pose.
Keep the banner, change it, or go with just the Iron Halo?
I rather like Sicarius's head here, looks like crap on the original (my Sicarius was built with bare head and Plasma pistol.)
The torso can be twisted to the left (as if you were the mini) quite a bit, tends to make the pose look defensive as if he took a step back and is parrying.

Re: idea for Vulkan conversion
i think an iron halo might look better than a banner. oh! speaking of, have you seen the iron halo the chaplain dreadnought comes with? i didnt put it on mine, so you can have it for him if you like the design
Re: idea for Vulkan conversion
What's he looking at? with such a sweet right arm pose I'd maybe have him staring down his right arm like he was in the middle of executing some sniveling coward crawling backwards on the ground... then I'd model that on the base cuz it'd be awesome.

Re: idea for Vulkan conversion
DT: That Iron Halo looks like it would be roughly Huron Blackheart sized, agreed it would look cool. If you can, bring it by on Thursday. And let me know if you are looking for any bitz for your stuff.
Smack. You have a point, maybe I should look at the other NFW I have and see if one will go better with that pose.
