Looking for some suggestion on a scout squad
Hi, I'm building the regular scout squad and have a choice of three weapons sets. What do people recommend choosing. I know this might be a very subjective question so I'll put in a qualifier. I'm looking for a generally good scout squad. I have one 5 man unit already built with sniper rifles and this is my second 5 man squad. So which combination would be most successful?
Thanks for your help with this.

Do you want the scouts close combat or really shooty?

I forgot to say, you could give one a heavy bolter, which is nice to have on a scout sqaud, but if you do that then you hae to give them shot guns because no point to get a heavy bolter in combat. But the you could give 3 shot guns and 2 close combat weapons for close range. Its a very diffecult. Scouts don't come with a lot of shooty weaons but the heavy bolter. I would go with close combat scouts because they are running up to tie up the opponent(in my games). But i don't know how you play your games and i don't know what the feel kind of army you want, but thats just a little help.

I really don't see any reason to not play scouts with sniper rifles.

Thanks. I was looking through the dex and they can come with a boltgun or shotgun. The dex seems to suggest that the squad act as a delivery vehicle for the Sargent who can take the exotic gear. Has this been found to be the case? Ok, reread everything I have. The bolt gun is perhaps a better option if I include a heavy bolter since I need the squad to stay still to use it which means I need greater range to make the rest of the squad effective. If I don't have a heavy bolter then shotguns are better because they have the assault 2 rule? Does this make sense or work? I have only one box of sniper scouts. Will most likely get more.

Shotguns do have assault 2 rule, if you took boltguns and heavy bolters then you would have to be up towards the middle of the board. I took scouts with combat blades shotguns and heavy bolter because i played templars and i had crudader sqauds with some scouts in some sqauds and some in the other, but in your case its diffecult, I would take more sniperscouts and hide them in a building because i think they have stealth which would give them a 3+ save . What i did with the heavy bolter is a put it in a drop pod with other scouts and marines that were pure close combat, then when i dropped i shot the enemy then the rest just assaulted. Take boltguns and heavy bolter

Re: Looking for some suggestion on a scout squad
Whats your primary plan for the squad. They can either be coming as flankers later in the game, in which case you might want to outfit them with of close combat gear if you think they might be trying to take objectives.
If you want them to start out in cover, perhaps in a forward position from infiltrating and holding an objective, you probably want the heavier weapons and a sgt. with a fist of power weapon to help repel any attackers.

Re: Looking for some suggestion on a scout squad
Thanks everyone. I've built a close combat squad for scouts for this 2nd squad. I plan on adding 2 more 5 man units I think. I've got the power fist from my assault marine squad and just need to find a plasma pistol. Thanks for all the help. I think I'll broaden the squads next time to include heavy weapons as neither has a rocket launcher or a heavy bolter. Any idea why this troop choice come only in 5 man sets rather then the more common 10 man units like the tactical marines?

Scouts offer a little more flexiblilty than the tacticals. You can still have a ten man squad, they just cost 13pts per model after the initial 5 are purchased. All the weapons options are available to the extra guys as well. So scouts are actualy 5-10 man squads.

Yea, I know you can fill out a unit but when you buy the figs the box only comes with five, not ten like the tactical. Its just a little weird that there isn't a 10 man box given that scouts are a regular troop choice, not something exotic.
