League rules, Scenarios, etc.
I've been thinking about switching up league play for awhile now, and I;v ecome acros a really cool idea from the guys who run the D6 Generation podcast. If you listen to their latest episode, the portion abou tthe X-cam (expansion campaign) is what I'm referring to.
Basically, it's a type of story telling league play. There is no map or campaign per se, however depending on the type of mission you play, whether you win or lose, were the challenger or challengee, depends on how many "points" you get. You play recon missions to gather recon points. You then use recon points to make strategic challenges, you then earn strategic points off of those which alow you to make a control point challenge. If you win the control point game you get a control point which will grant a benefit of some sort, usually a veteran unit or something similar.
I'm tossing around the idea, with more rules of course to be structured. Each level would probably constitute a point value. Recon might be under 1000, strategic 1000-1999 and control 2000+. Each level would also have it's own set of random scenarios which would determine your objective, how many points you earn, etc.
It's a theorectical way of portraying your force actually doing something other than just showing up at the battlefield every week. Your carrying over points each week and the control games (which could easily be Apocalypse games) become the talk of the league.
I've left things really vague, but wanted some discussion going on it. I think everyone is ready for a change and this was the coolest thing I've come across in a long time. If you have the time, go listen to the d6 generation podcast.

Re: League rules, Scenarios, etc.
Due to Dial-up internet...no podcast for me.
However, I do like the idea.
The only thing I might change is the top level points cap. Maybe make it 1800+ so that it is possible to still play a game on a league night.

I'm in favor of the idea as well. As for thoughts, I've never listened to podcasts (doesn't that require an iPod or something?) and I'd like to hear more once the idea matures, but maybe as an initial thought it would be somewhat interesting if we could generate stories for our own forces as well. Like creating fluff for your own force that also contains some sort of personal objective like for instance as a simple example an HQ having "Personally kill 10 Opponent Generals" or for a more complex one say for a Techmarine "Recover five Land Raiders" and allow said player to have some mission where a busted Land Raider is in the middle of the table and the force's objective is to fix and recover the Land Raider or something of the likes and once you achieve your objective you'd get some form of bonus of some sorts.

That could definitely be something we could add at some point. I could provide a list of personal army objectives at the beginning of the campaign and if you achieve those objectives at some point in the campaign, youd get a reward of some sort.
You definitely do not have to have an ipod.

Those 4 podcasts about the best ones going for GW related stuff. I like the D^ generation the most simply because they talk about everything game related focusing mostly on board games and minatures, but will touch on computer, role-playing, etc.
Your living in the dark ages Justin, time to enter the world of podcasting!
Oh, you can either steam them through your media player or just download the mp3 file straight.

Sounds really cool to me. The games take on extra meaning (and fun) when part of a greater continuity.
