Brush on Varnishes Empty Brush on Varnishes

Hey guys.
I'm looking for your opinions on the Varnishes of the Brush on variety.

I have an old bottle of the GW gloss varnish I used the other day and it, like I expected left a nice glossy vinish.
I'm painting a figure thats a motorcycle and rider, the motorcycle is sitting now with a nice glossy look to it to simulate the clear coats applied on vehicles, but the rider I couldnt paint glossy because that would just look stupid IMO.
I found a link to the Vallejo Matte Varnish, and I think I want to give it a try, but looking to see if anyone has any experience with the brush on varnishes...
Reviews im reading just say that the peep just load the varnish into an airbrush (which I have, but cant use due to improper venting)...

AP matte varnish brush on is decent. I don't expect some will agree with me.

I use the Vallejo brush on varnishes from time to time to either protect work while I'm still working on the mini or to prep a surface for a decal but I have not found anything that protects and provides a consistent perfect finish like testor's dullcote in a spray can.

A lot of people online too suggest the dullcote too. Its always a spray? Or does it have a brush on as well?

Also, I'm wondering if the vallejo matte brush on will actually look "matte" when it dries... I'm reading that people are 50-50 on it, some say yea, others no - that it looks more satin/semigloss....

I haven't found a brush on matte varnish that is really matte. But I haven't looked for long. Spray Dullcote trumps all. There is no reason to not use it even if it's just the final step after sealing with some other type of varnish.

Are you purposely not wanting to use a spray can?

I think, looking back at his original post, that winter ventilation and not wanting to spray indoors is his issue with spraying.

If you have a room that vents the smell of human shit, you have a room that you can spray the odd mini in.

"If you spray anything other than air freshener in my bathroom, you better call your proctologist, cuz I will shove it directly up your ass." -the wife.

I agree with you Scott, but the buck may not stop with him:)

Have to agree with Beau here. If I sprayed in the washroom iv would never hear the end of it...
Either way I'll probably be picking up some Vallejo matte varnish next time I'm by the den then I'll post a review up for people if they are interested.

That's a pretty good idea actually.

Not sure why your woman persons care if you spray-paint something in the bathroom. ???

Once I get my own place, I am going to set up a painting station with a range hood over it. That and some nice white lights should have things sitting pretty.

It's the smell. The smell doesn't go away after you have sprayed so the while house will start smelling like spray paint. She didn't even like it when I spray outside and then bring my figs back in because of the smell.

some people have an extreme sensitivity to the chemicals used in aerosols. my mom's like that; if i ever sprayed indoors when i was still in school, she'd get migraines immediately. it didnt bother me before but recently i notice it bothers me a bit too if i dont take it outside. since i live in a big apt, i just go into the stairwell and spray there. the air flow in stairwells tends to hide smells pretty well.

For all you dudes who can't spray in your house 'cause the old lady doesn't like the smell. Do your womenfolk ever use nail polish? Or nail polish remover? How about perfume?

About the OP, brush on whatever you like but even the best brush on will be a distant second place to spray on dullcote.

Another option to consider is some kind of air purifier/filter. We have one set up in the basement so that people can smoke without things getting stunk up too bad. Admittedly we need to get around to cleaning the filter, but it is definitely an option to consider.
