As the store league is caught up in finals right now, and the next store league might not start for a little while, I would like to start a league of my own.

It can be for prizes (if people are willing to pay into it) or just for fun. Games will be held any day during the week. Factions will own land, and be able to attack any zone they share a border with, and can hold their game any day during the week; and for any point value agreed upon, It can be 400-point recon, or a 10k apocalypse.

Right now though I would need a list of players and armies. please post your name and faction below if interested in joining.

What mission selections (i.e., standard, non-standard)? Might I propose the 5x5 AKA the "Stelek" mission? We should at least try it out Razz

Would you allow people to switch between lists and armies? What about rulings on allies?

I'd be willing to play, only because... it's playing some games of 40K. Very Happy Any of the armies in my signature; 1 750 or even 1 850 is OK but 2 000 is what I really prefer. Below 1 750 and above 2 500 40K seems to start to fall apart so I'm avoiding those at all costs.

It would be nice if the whole "you must play small games before getting the meat and potatoes of 40K" recon/strategic/control thing wasn't used. I mean, if it must be used, so shall it be; but I've never really been a fan of it.

Be careful HC, you are treading on the line of offending the ideas of the group of gamers that made it possible for you to connect with all the players you do now. The rec/strat/control league was created before you joined our little group from the opinion of all of us involved.

Not to defend HC (God forbid) Or derail further (Oh noes), but it is worth pointing out that once people get enough recon points to play strat games, they pretty much universally play those higher point games unless they have to get more recon points, since most people seem to have more fun with them, which is, I assume, the point HC was trying to get across in his usual foot in mouth manner.

Lord knows I can\'t play recon to save my life. =/

Edit: Duh. I forgot to mention, Assuming I continue to feel better as I have the last few days, I\'ll most certainly be in for something like this. You might want to talk to tyson as he\'s been floating some ideas around the house very similar to yours.

I have no problem at all if someone wants to run something likethis while the league is in downtime.

I'm not sure if were going to run the recon/strat/control type format next league, Ill post up a poll before the next leageu starts and see what people think. If we don't use it, we'll be going to the very simple.. you play a game and you get point depending if you win, lose or draw.

I thnk Ill count myself lucky I missed whatever post is being referenced..

Matches will be 2000 points. Every extra territory captured (beyond starting land of 3 territories) grants a player a 50 point bonus to their lists.

The mission type will be as follows::

The player with the most points after 6 turns wins. There are 2 ways to get points. First, you get the point cost in points for every unit you destroy, and 50% for units below 50% start strength, or immobilized vehicles. Ex: A player kills a squad of 5 Tactical marines, he then gets 15x5 = 75 (the cost of the unit) in victory points. Then there are also 3 objectives. One in the direct center of the table, which if held by a troop at the end of the 6th turn, is worth 1000 points. Each player also places one objective anywhere on the table more than 12" from any table edge, or other objective; these are worth 500 each. Also note, there will be NO taking the initiative OR random game length

In addition, before every game, roll a dice to determine the special rules. On a :
1 - pitched battle (no reserves or deep strike)
2 - night fight (roll 2d6x3 to see something, all game) (reserves and deep strike allowed)
3 - recon (deploy up to 2 troop 1 HQ) (rest in reserves and deep strike)
4 - assassination (both players name one of their enemy's HQ which becomes an objective worth 500 bonus if killed) (reserves and deep strike allowed)
5 - ambush (player going first deploys within 18" of center objective) (other player deploys within 6" along any of the 4 table edges) (no reserves/deep strike)
***6 - king of the hill (center objective is worth 1500 points in this game, place a cool terrain piece there) (reserves and deep strike allowed)


The winner of any game takes a territory point from that game's loser. Once a player has no more territories, they are removed from the campaign.

K, I suppose I should bring up a couple of rules right off the bat since I think they will probably be relevant.

1. Space marines: These guys, and others like them have the ability to deep strike despite what the rules of the game are. This is still in effect no matter what the game type is right?

2. Dark eldar: I love that I actually get to bring this up, since the league uses kill points to determine draws rather than victroy points like the rule book suggests... do the dark eldar rules for bonus victory points apply to this game? (it is a racial special feature Laughing )

Now, for more abstract commenary. We have a system of attacking/defending.

Concern the first: How do we establish rules for when/who people can challenge, what happens when the attacker loses, how many games can we play in a week, does this include being attacked vs making an attack?

Concern the second: This system seems to be based very much off the concept of attacking/defending, what I find odd about the rules set is that there is no involvement about who is attacking/defending in the game play rules or scenarios. This isn't really a problem, just an observation that I figured I'd make for the sake of making it.

Ok, this last section here is one I really don't like bringing up, but its something I would be very much happy to see addressed even if it is a brief touch on it. The biggest hole I see in this thing is competition vs casual play. There is absolutely no sportsmanship side. In normal league play there is a subconcious self defense to people who play lists that others see as a little too competitive for their own tastes. Everybody is here for their own reasons. The natural counter for this in our normal play is that it is based on a challenge system. People have the right to not play you. So your double lash crazy death list may not be the best choice for continued gaming.

This thing is very much based off of specific locations in which you fight specific people. One of the newer players gets stuck next to a vet, and you can see how quickly this game could become very NOT fun for them. What compulsion is there to stop people from playing exceptionally competitive lists in a game where there is a prize at the end and elimination if you don't win enough? But on the reverse side, this IS a competition so who are people to tell others that they can't play their A game? And I know I am going to hate myself for bringing this up, I just know it, but in the interest of all fairness what is there to reward people for going the extra mile and pulling out painted armies?

This is a problem that comes up in almost all forms of gaming. I'm just wondering how we can avoid anybody getting boned before this thing even starts, rather than dealing with it after its become a problem.

Definitely interested in the concept, and I'd also like to say I agree with some of Tyson's concerns, more specifically as they relate to the nature of attack vs defense.
IE :
What happens if the same 'territory' is challenged 5 times in one week?
Do defenders get anything for winning aside from keeping the territory?
Can people turn down challenges? This could become a big problem if someone only has 'access' to one opponent.. if that opponent is unavailable/doesn't want to play, the other person is forced to sit out as well, but on the OTHER hand, we don't want to FORCE people to play a match they don't want to.


Anyways, I'm sure we'll get all the details worked out, and I'd like to throw my chip into the hat.

Tyson brings up excellent points.


So basically this tournament is using victory points instead of kill points (hooray, kill points are very badly designed). I approve fully. I like the consistent use of one mission type throughout the campaign - whilst not quite the 5x5 it's still much better than any of the GW default scenarios.

I think the removal of deep strike and reserves for half of the games really kills a lot of the fun. They are both handy tactical tools and make matches more interesting as opposed to just lining up and shooting each other (more or less).

I disagree strongly with the aspect of troops being able to respawn upon being destroyed (especially if they are forced to respawn). Why? Tervigons. En masse guard squads (some CC builds use this). Necrons also become impossible to phase out (whilst not necessarily a bad thing...)

I think that full scale war thing is open to so much abuse it's better to drop it.

I'd prefer if this didn't start this week, because then I would have my Tyranids ready. If it must be, I shall commit to my Space Marines.


As a final note... since this is a very new and risky type of campaign I'd suggest we don't do prizes/entrance fees until we iron some of the bigger bugs, notably what Tyson said.

Just make sure all the guys playing their playoff game have priority for all tables. Beyond those games, anything can be planned for league night. Jus tbe fair to the guys who might have booked a table in advance though.

It has just occured to me that making an actual map may be over-complicated.

As a simplification, every player starts with 3 territory points.

Every time you beat someone, you steal a point from them.
For every point you have above 3, you get a bonus to your army list:: 4=50, 5=100, 6=150, etc...

When some1 loses their last territory point, they are eliminated.

I will create and keep a score sheet on a new Thread, and every time some1 reports a game, I will adjust it.

***** The Scoresheet will go up in the thunderdome

1. If it says you can deep strike regardless Ex: Drop Pod transport, Swooping Hawk Wings, then you can regardless of scenario

3. And for your other comments, Im killing the map idea, and just going for territory points. And if we get enough entrants, we can divide the prize money among 1st place, 2nd place, best painted army, and sportmanship award. best paint and sportmanship will be voted on.

I'd like to second the motion that we NOT start this week - I was hoping to have a little time to test out a new army before commiting to a campaign. Especially if there is going to be an entrance fee, I'd prefer if we took some time to iron everything out before starting.

I also agree with Alex on the following points:

A - half of the scenarios are no deep strike/reserve. Now, this doesn't affect me directly as I rarely use them (actually, it would probably be good for me, I hate when my opponent reserves everything), but I agree with Alex's take on the situation. Maybe if it were 1 or 2, but 3 out of 6 options are 'no reserve or deepstrike' (Whereas a 6th is MUST reserve large portion). As it's currently set up, only a third of games played will follow normal reserve rules.

B - The full scale war respawning - As Alex said, it seems unbalanced and easily abused (even accidentally).

Ehh, I'd be inclined to argue that during a game. GW never really defines that "beginning of the turn" clause... just that turns are divided into three sections: movement, shooting, assault... (page 9) with Movement being "the beginning". I have always checked for Phase Out after reserves since they both technically occur at the same time and indeed do not have a defined sequence. Note that this is not solved by any of their FAQs... lovely.

5. The idea of the special rule random roll, is that you must make a very well rounded list, becaues, it might be stalled, or forced into nightfight, or make you wish you chose more troops.
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense, unless I'm misinterpreting the "well rounded" part. A well-rounded (balanced) list can use deep strike very effectively, same thing with reserves - Tyranid mycetic spore lists being an example of that (marine drop pods are kinda that way too but tyranids do it better).

Forcing reserves is also a bad idea, it gives Guard an unnecessary advantage. We have a few guard players, so.

The full scale war respawning - As Alex said, it seems unbalanced and easily abused (even accidentally).
Oh, oh, another example: Razorback/immolator spam. No one likes having those cheeky gits come back on the table Very Happy



Note that I'll still gladly play, just that I disagree with a few minor details.

You need to step away from your hookah. Slowly. Codex: Space Marines does drop podding better than nids ever could, with drop pod assault, drop pods that can actually take some killing and so forth. Nid-Pod isn't bad, but it will never really compete, just like spacewolf podding doesn't.
