Road Warrior Orks
So, my new plan is to build an army around one the best movies ever created, the Road Warrior but with an overall Mad Max type theme. This has gone through a few different phases for me, and has been a plan I've been toying with for years. After the last edition of the Imperial Guard codex came out, I thought I might be able to do it with the Warrior weapon type of list, but the lack of vehicles and ability to move quick was always an issue. Rough riders would of ended fielding the need for bikes and chimeras would of had to stand in for souped dart tossing cars.
Speed freaks was a great list, but Trev was running rampant with his army and I didnt want to have two armies that were the same. Another thought was to perhaps use the speed freaks list, but just use converted catachans as stand in for the orks. The army would look just like Road Warrior guys, however, I dont know if that's really what I wanted. I converted a few guys but wasn't to happy with the result.
So, new Ork codex, new army list, new figures, and I'm in need of some new modelling motivation. I think the time has officially arrived. I've picked up a box of Ork boyz and a box of bikes and I'm ready to start working. My working army list is going to be something like this.
HQ - Wazdakka
I usually don't using the named characters, but I'll use him as a stand in and convert him to look like Wez from the movie. As well, I need to be able to take bike units as troops. There is a little grot that comes with the bike box that will fit perfectly behind the ork on the bike. All I'll need to do is give him a leather outfit and some long flowing blond hair.
HQ #2
I have a few ideas floating around, but trying to decide what will work best with the army. There are two choices right now. First, a big ork boss. Ryan gave me the idea to make a Master Blaster like guy. I was thinking of perhaps using an ogre body for a little better size and then tossing a grot on his back to ride him. Second idea would be to have a Weirdboy (who's rules I love!) and model him to look like the servant guy of Humongous who gets his fingers lopped off. The weird boy miniature already looks strangely like him, all I would need to do would be to model some fur on him. However, he was such a minor character I really would't want to make him an HQ. Of course, I could always make a Warboss and model him after Humongous himself. A big mek also might work if I could model him after Max himself, with a big leg brace and a "squig" like per for the dog companion.
Troops
Bikes will make up a big chunk of the army. I'll probably be fielding 3 squads at least. I'm looking at about 18-27 bikes total for the army. I haven't decided yet if I'll model a unit of Nobz on bikes, but it's a possibility.
I'll also be fielding about 3-4 trukks worth of boyz. The trukks will be a variation of designs on vehicles from the movie. I plan on having one after Humongous's car, one similar to the camel drawn wagon in Thunderdome, and probably one in an El Camino style but of course with a bigger flatbed to haul orks. I'm going to try to keep alot of the overall feel of the new ork trukks, but each one will have some modifications probably mostly relating to the transport area, guns or the cab.
Elites
I haven't been able to decide on any units from here yet but I may throw in some Burnaboyz because of all the flamers in the movies. Besides the burnaboyz, nothing else really fits. Kommandos outfitted in fur with steel boomerangs is a distant possibility.
Fast Attack
This slot is going to fill up fast, as it has all the good units for the Road Warrior theme. I wont have to take any more bikes as I'll be using them as troops. Deffkoptas will be an absolute neccesity. I'll use one choice tot ake a unit of 3 and will probably take one buzzsaw and load the rest up with big bombs. I'll also need to take a warbuggy squad. This might be the tough modelling part. The current buggies are still junk, and I'm going to need to model some dune buggy types mixed with some sporty beat-up car types. As well, I'm going to have to decide on whether or not I want to take a second unit of buggies or a unit of Stormboyz. Sure, there wasn't any jetpacks in the movies, but come on, if any type of unit was going to appeal to an Ork army that moves fast and is semi-feral, these would be them. They would fit with the army style perfectly, the only problem being the actualy fit with the movie. I could alwyas model little backpacks with mini helicoper blades, and at least there would be the gyrocopter type of feel to them.
Heavy Support
Not to many big choices to make here, at least ones that fit. One war wagon will be in the works for sure. Of course, I plan to model up a "rig big enough to haul that tankah". It will more or less be just like a semi, with a tractor compartment pulling a trailer thats more built for transporting Orks than gasoline. I might toss in a looted vehicle for some more modelling purposes and just to get some more vehicles on the table. An ornance template cant hurt.
Another idea would be to take some killer kans or deff dreads and model them up Road Warrior style with steel mohawks and shoulder pads. I could even carry over the Master blaster idea if I dont go with an HW and have grots acting as pilots in little carry packs on their backs. If I went with the big mek, I could take one as a troops option and not worry about maxing out the slots.
So far, those are my ideas. I've got some early models shaping up and plan on posting them as soon as I get home from out of town Sunday night. All in all, I want to make sure that army moves fast, looks like a smoke belching horde, and gets up close and personal really quickly. With what I listed above, I think I'm going to have alot of room for more units since Orks are so cheap these days.

Re: Road Warrior Orks
i think you could make biggies easy with p-card tubeing an that petty pint mesh i have . you would just need some wheels , a driver and a engine .
nob bikers can be taken as elites or troops if you have a warboss( solving your elites problem).
sounds like it will be a fun army to build , verry ambitious though

road warrior
Haha, we just watched road warrior tonight while we were painting. I was more focused on the painting than the movie, but man it is a very cool idea.
Re: Road Warrior Orks
I agree that road warrior is one of the greatest movies ever. But i don't know if mel would like to look like an ork.... anyway, good ideas, i especially like the idea for the wagon. The big rig is KEY to the whole thing. the trailer could look like a tanker but have it cut open at the top for ork purposes....

Well...
.. crazy ol' Mel has gone bonkers, so he might not mind looking like an Ork.
I've got a squad of boyz and bikers almost done modelling, Ill post pics tonight when I get back home. I still have to green stuff their mohawks on though and finish up some studs for their shouolder pads.
I dont think the army will be too too hard, just a bit of time. However, I like the movie so much so it should be easy work.
Cam, as System Commander, I order you to rewatch Road Warrior without distraction.
I did have another point to bring up about he list, but now I can't remember.

Re: Road Warrior Orks
This project is still on my hobby table. I'll post some pictures of the Orks I have done shortly, but right now I'm primarily waiting for the Ork box set (Defffkoptas!) and I wanted to see how 5th edition would change a fast Ork army.
I've got some bikes finished up.. although I mounted on the large round bases which according to the new rule book is technically illegal (grumble, grumble) and now I'll need my opponents permission to use them. Of all the stupid rules to include.. *sigh*
Anyway, the one thing I was pretty surprised to seein the rulebook was the turbobooster change. I should reread it again when I get home, but from what I grabbed from it it says if you turboboost, you get a 3+ cover save. So, ork bikers are even better? 4+ all the time, 3+ if they turboboost.. these guys can't go wrong! That gets me exicted about the 3 squads of bikers I want to include.

Re: Road Warrior Orks
Hey Robyn, this is the GD special ed fig from 2007. Probably still available from direct services. He's way bigger than an orc, he won't mount on a 25mm (square) base. He's pretty close to the ogre size you were after. Just Hockey mask him up....
I ripped this pic off the net from some unsuspecting clown using a dope google search. Boo-yah! Not my paint job!
