Best Marine Allies
Hey all.
So I found my old Storm Talon model I got just before I took my break, and... it's sitting there all bare and grey...
But... My situation is that the Blood Angels cannot use it, yet.
Do I paint it up as a blood angel on the small chance they allow them into the Blood Angel chapter... Or, go ahead and paint it up as a different chapter and pick up some marines/HQ to do an allies sort of thing.
What do you guys would be a god "fluffy" pairing for Blood Angels/Marine Chapter?
Thoughts?

Re: Best Marine Allies
You could do an estranged successor chapter that follows the codex.
Other than that I would imagine there are a number of chapters that have good relations with the BA.

Re: Best Marine Allies
paint it up as blood angles and use whatever marine allies you want in your army, just tell people those units are from a successor chapter that spent too much time near terra.

I've always liked the smurf chapter...
Yeah, I could. But I was under the impression that all the BA successor chapters followed the BA dex. Kinda looking for hard existing documented chapters that best or had the most pair ups with the angels. And my non-angel fluff knowledge is really limited.

Well technically all the "true" BA successor chapters would suffer the black rage or red thirst. You could do a replacement successor chapter, or one that has been significantly rebuilt, using gene-stock from Terra. Hence the use of the standard marine rules rather than BA rules.

Re: Best Marine Allies
You could buy a second talon and then if you have a raven, fly the three as that formation data slate where the 2 talons can escort the raven in all at once. Cause it's a data slate formation, you can paint it any color, ie blood angels

Tell me more....
Also. Am I allowed to run dataslate formations if I don't own an iPad to get the rules in the first place?

Re: Best Marine Allies
I think most folks around here are fine so long as you can have a copy of the rules on hand in one form or another, even if it's a print off found on the interwebs.
The Dataslate in question also includes the stat lines associated with the models it uses, and I think they get a minor special rule or two for running them as the formation.

The Formation is a little Pricey points wise, but, it saves me from spending more points than I need to on a 2nd detachment.
Right now you are my own personal Emperor Sanguinius be damned
110pts per talon, and 200 for the raven... 420pts of evil (if I don't upgrade them), and as long as at least 1 talon is not completely destroyed (I interpret this to be as long as 1 talon still is alive... is that right? what weird wording....) the storm raven gains strafing run... WOW
BS 5 Stormraven HOOOOOOOOOOOO

Formations have been a split so far. Some events yes, some events no.
Just a heads.up in case an event pops up and your surprised if formations arent in.

I assume the units in the slate still count towards my force org chart where they would usually be?
I mean, I don't even have Storm talons in my main list, but in C:SM they are Fast Attack.. So, would they be fast attack in any list I take them in? Hmmm... Under Army and Battlefield Role is says its a formation that consists of the following units from Codex: Space Marines:
- 1 Stormraven gunship
- 2 Stormtalon gunships
Dusk says I can run just that... I'm still not sure how formations really work and all... what book is this covered in, and how it would work for other dex's taking it etc.?
I'm not worried. I don't even have 2 storm talons now anyways to pull this off, but it gives me something to build to. I know there are mixed feelings on the Talon in that its ugly, but I happen to like how it looks, and when it escorts my raven it just looks boss...

Re: Best Marine Allies
Formations currently have not been specified how they fit into the Force Organization Chart. That is why some events do or do not allow them. Sometimes it is easier to just not allow them rather than figure out how they would work (for astro as an example).

Ahh, I see. Makes sense then. Go figure they wouldn't touch on that at all.... :S

Re: Best Marine Allies
Yeah, formations are in a sort of nether-region of rules right now. On the one hand the Formation itself doesn't occupy any particular FoC space, but it remains mostly undetermined if units inside the Formation holds any ties to where they would have originally sat in the FoC, thus confusing things for missions such as The Scouring and Big Guns Never Tire, as well as things like that Eldar formation with all the Wraiths. In the Iyanden list, a good chunk of that would be troops, and thus scoring, but the Formation doesn't exist as part of the Primary Detachment and it doesn't seem to be any way for a Spirit Seer in said detachment to make them scoring bodies.

You think they WILL touch base on that at all?
Have formations been used in the city here? What's the general feedback on them? IE, those that use formations are the OMGWTFBBQ powerful formations, or are they within reason?
The Stormwing formation looks uber, but the talons are still tinfoil (2 HP), and as Robyn said in another post he has no troubles with flyers usually so (other than me who I know HAS troubles) Im not sure if anyone else is afraid of flyers....

Re: Best Marine Allies
Since mid 2013 there has been a huge drop in GW doing FAQs or amendments. So I wouldn't get my hopes up. Probably if there is this 6.5 over the summer?
The only formation for sure that is silly is the Tau one (tank hunters and PE space marines on Broadsides/Riptide). All the others range from good (the new 'Nids ones are going to be awesome I think, almost makes me glad I didn't sell them!) to horrible (the aforementioned blob of wraiths that are not troops and gain blah special rules).

Re: Best Marine Allies
i'll try to sum up the formation for ya matt;
formation dataslates do not take up any foc slots. they're like a mini-ally list, but you have the take whatever units they state are in the formation. the only one i've seen so far that gives you options, is the tyrannic war veterans one that lets you take a variable number of veteran squads, and storm talons. the trade off is so long as the game your playing has a large enough point limit, you still have your full primary FOC chart, plus can take another ally codex. as well as a codex: inquisition list, and a codex: legion of the damned list, as these last two do not take up the primary's or the ally's FOC slots, but instead use their own in-book foc chart. (tossing points limits to the winds, you could max out the FOC chart on blood angel units, plus field this flyer dataslate, plus 2 inquisitor models and up to 3 full henchman squads, plus a full ally FOC chart of...lets say space wolves, plus a full 4 squads of legion of the damned, plus take the tyrannic war veterans one, which consists of cassius, 4 full squads of these veterans, and 6 storm talons that-get-to-start-ON-the-board-turn-one!, plus the wraithguard one of 15 wraithguard, 2 wraithlords, and a wraithknight, plus the tau crisis suit formation..*big breath*..and that would be a totally legal army.)
and yes, the flyer formation works as thus;
you take a storm raven, plus 2 storm talons.
they take up zero FOC slots in your list.
they all start in reserve, and you only roll for the storm raven to enter the board. if it gets in, the 2 talons follow it onto the board, instead of the usual limit of only one talon can escort a model onto the board from reserves.
so long as 1 talon is not destroyed, the storm raven gets their Strafing Run rule. essentially making it BS 5 against nearly everything.
just a tip with the talons; buy the skyhammer missile wargear. skyhammers are: the shit. for how cheap they are and the fact its basically 3 autocannon strength shots at a 5 foot range....just buy them. theyre awesome.
