Aegwymourn's GK Character
So I figured I'd give this a go. Have no idea if I'll finish in four weeks since I am apparently the world's slowest painter, but I'll try dammit!
(As an aside I did not covert this model, Mike did, but he looks pretty boss)
So, here are a couple of shots of the model and the base he will be mounted on. I dry fit him a little to take advantage of the base and I think he will do quite nicely.
The base has been coated with "ungor flesh" thinned enough to go through my airbrush. I am going for a sandstone kind of look that I will highlight with a blend of ungor flesh and grey.
So I had found a couple of airbrush mettalics on Spiky Bits the last time I was perusing for airbush paints and this seemed like the time to try them out. I have to say the first one I tried, which is close to "ironbreaker" in color was pretty decent. It is an actual metallic, which to be honest I was worried about. The second, which is brighter, I didn't like at all.
So then the whole model got a wash with Agrax Earthshade - These photos turned out like garbage, so I'll snap some more before I do anything else.
Then finally I started work on the base. I want it to look like there is a creepy green glow coming from all the lettering on the bases. So I did the top pieces and the big lettering with Calaban Green. I then did the small lettering and two lines around it with Beil-Tan shade and just slathered it on. I will hopefully be less of a "deep" green. I am not sure how I want to go about highlighting it since I have never done something like this before. See where the wind takes me I guess!

The thing that really stands out to me is how clean and organized your hobby space is. My hobby space looks like a hobo lives in it.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
Well my b-day is later this month and my wife got me a new hobby desk the last weekend. We spent most of friday night putting it together. Then I have stole a little dvd shelf thing and tossed that on top till I can get a real stand. So it hasn't had time to get cluttered/dirty, lol. I'm sure in another week it'll be nasty again. My old work space was horrible. It is nice to finally have room to put stuff that isn't directly where I am working.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
Spent a good portion of today working on this particular dude.
First painted everything I wanted red with a mix of "Khorne Red" and "Mephiston Red"
I then decided to do his sword by working up from Kantor Blue to Macragge Blue to Hoeth Blue to Hoeth Blue+Skull White. Didn't turn out as nice as I wanted but I have never been good at blending paints up like this. Will do for now.
I then layed up his loincloth. Using Khorne Red, Mephiston Red, and Evil Sunz Scarlet. I also did some edge work on the Psycannon.
I then decided that I would try and hardcoat the loincloth since it turned out really nice in person. This proceeded to make it shiny as f*** and erase a lot of the blending I did.
I moved on to painting the power cords blue and anything that will eventually be a parchment color Mournfang Brown.
I wrapped up today by doing a little drybrush highlighting on the power cords.
At some point in there I did a lot of the lettering with Ghenna Gold. I am not sure how a lot of it turned out though. Some is decent and some I might end up trying to redo. So far I'd say I'm happy with the progress. I really want to take my time with these GK and spend about as much time on each guy as I can. It doesn't hurt that I really enjoy the models. About the only thing I can complain about is that some of the lettering does not have very much depth to it. So when you go to paint it there is very little room for error, especially if your paints are a little watered down.
As a side note, a shout-out to Planes for reminding me to make my own wet-pallet. I will never paint without one again. The ease of mixing/using paints from one is amazing.

I like how this guy is coming together so far. Everything is nice and clean, and in some of the shots it looks like the wash gave him a nice brassy effect. Is that just a result of lighting, or did that actually happen? I really like the contrast of the red on the "I" with the blue on the rest of the blade.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
A little bit. I tend to like washing even if a lot of it gets covered up since it helps me figure out where lines and depressions are on the model. On most of the body the metallic grey still comes through but on a bit it does look either rusty/brass-like. I do enjoy that red on the blue blade as well.
I am still at a bit of a loss how I want the main body plates to be. I worry that if they are all metal (probably Ironbreaker with Runefang Steel highlights) it will look a bit odd. I still have a ton of other work still to do on him though. Next up is all the scroll work getting hit by Ushabti Bone and then highlighted. Then I have to do all the skulls (bugger has a ton of them). After that I think I will come back to a lot of the things I am undecided about and see where I am at. I'm still not sure I like the psycannon's red paint. I think I hamfisted the red highlights.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
Thanks Adam! So far I am really liking the contrasting colors. Between the blue/red/metallics it is really interesting. I think I am going to end up redoing the shoulderpads though. I really don't like how the lettering turned out so far.
Small update tonight. Got a half an hour to do most of the parchment done with Ushabit Bone. I saw a technique where the guy left a little bit of the mournfang brown on the edges and turned out nice. I attempted the same and currently unsure if it looks as nice.
I will be replacing that last shot, but the only front one I have where I turned the flash off is horribly blurry.

How I did my lettering on my Knights is paint it all gold and nail it with Nuln Oil, I find that it turns out great.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
Well I am going to try shading it with either Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade before I do anything else with it. I also would get a slightly more precise brush before I attempt to do any of the lettering again. The brush I have been using is the "precise detail" armypainter brush (for all the detail work), but I need something just a hair more fine for that lettering. I have a couple of cheap Michael's brushes that I do a majority of the base/shading work with.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
Managed to sneak away for a bit tonight after watching Archer.
Worked on the base a bit more. Doing a loose highlight with Warpstone Glow. Followed by a tighter highlight with Moot Green and a final Highlight of white scar and moot green. Afterwards everything got a green glaze.
Then I did some more work on the model proper. I highlighted the parchment with ulthuan grey and ushabti bone mix before doing a final edge highlight with pure ulthuan grey.
I also painted up his grenade with warpstone glow to moot green and a final edge highlight of moot green and white scar.
Also painted the top edge of his hat with auric gold
Inked all the lettering in his shoulder pads with nuln oil. they look a lot better after that. Still not sure if I am happy with them.
After all that I did a quick job of painting all the skulls with white scar to get them ready to be painted.
So far I am really liking how he is turning out. I am not sure if the base is going to turn out how I want, but I still have a fair bit of work to do on it. What color do you think I should paint the little headband above his visor? I don't want to do red since it'll just wash into his visor and blue would contrast to much I think. More ushabti bone perhaps and shaded to white?

Alternating white and another color on the head band could work. White/Blue would kick up the contrast, White/Red would tie in with heraldry and such, White/Gold also comes to mind.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
So over the last day or two I have managed to get a bit more work done on my inquisitor/Grand master character. Although over the weekend I was feeling a little frustrated so I did some work putting together a handful more terminators I had picked up to round our my full group of paladins.
the rest of these photos might be out of order a bit, but I'll try and summarize what I did in each of them.
So I finished up with most of the work on the base. highlighting the lettering up from caliban to warpstone to moot green. I like the actual lettering a lot. the rest of the base got a wash with agrax earthshade and then highlighted with ungor flesh. I realize that the OSL green more or less failed, but for a first time trying something like that and first time using glazes I'm decently happy with the results. oh and I painted the rim with brown to give it a nice color to separate it from the rest of the base, yet still tie it together (i hope).
Here I had painted all the skulls white scar, washed with agrax, then painted with ushabti bone. I also painted his little censer thingy bronze and washed with agrax.
I then did a final highlight with a 50/50 mix of ushabti and ulthuan grey
I then decided to tidy a lot of the previously washed metal sections with ironbreaker.
I plan on highlighting a lot of them later with runefang. I hope it turns out well when i get to it.
So far I am decently pleased. A lot of what is left are small niggly things (all the different items on his belt, the censer thing, his headband, etc). It just seems like I have a ton left to do which can make me frustrated and then I rush and goober things. Hopefully it is all worth it.

Re: Aegwymourn's GK Character
Managed to get a bit more work done on my Inquisitor/Grand Master model. Painted the hilt of the sword and the censor a bit.
Then I painted the locked thingy on his belt
Painted the tiny swords on his heraldry shield and shoulder as well
Painted his headband blue and did a highlight of it.
I consider the model mostly done now. I took a couple of wider angle shots to see if anyone notices something I missed or has any suggestions. Otherwise I will be hardcoating/sealing the model sometime tomorrow so I don't have to worry about rubbing any paint off (almost happened twice now). What do you guys think?
