would you be interested in playing in a Zone Mortalis Tournament?
Re: tournament interest
Hmmm, I hadn't thought about that. That's a good point. I'll mull it over over the next couple months and decide if we use them or not. If I was playing, I'd personally want the blips and the "bad stuff happens" chart. The day of the tournament, what gets left in will be on the sheets at the end of the tables.
My other issue I'm having right now is whether it should be free for the first tournament or not. I don't know if I should take fees for the tourny

Re: tournament interest
Are you putting time into crafting boards/making rules/organizing space (yes obviously) then you should be compensated for said time. I would have no problem paying the first time for an afternoon of fun times!

Re: tournament interest
I was talking about this game type with Demon Fox at work earlier today, and we were both real jazzed about the unknown enemy optional rule. I don't suppose the Den has any of these tiles set up already so I could take the game type for a test run or two, does it?
Also, does anyone know how some of the weird codex specific schtick would work in this game type? Solar pulses and storms and such. Also, the viability of deep striking, as some units do such by teleporting rather than drop pod.

Re: tournament interest
A few folks have the space hulk tiles. I have a few jpgs ppl could print out if they were so inclined.
Deep strike isnt/wasn't allowed under the old rules unless it was teleporting or similar. No idea if that changed.
as to the rest, not sure. Night Fight turned on and off under the old rules to simulate intermittent power loss. Case by case basis.

sorry it took so long to reply; it became a shitshow at work today.
in ZM, the only things allowed to use Deep Strike are things that teleport or materialize from The Warp, so drop pods, for example, can't be used because they fall from the sky. and assault squads and 90% of a blood angel list can't deep strike either.
that's ok though, because deep striking into those tight spaces takes balls of gold; its way too easy to scatter into a wall and then your stuck doing deep strike mishaps. so unless you're opponent is very very ballsy, or ben ( ), they probably wont deep strike anything for fear of losing the squad.
Night Fighting doesn't exist in ZM games unless you're playing the Blood in the Void Scenarios (spaceship battles), where the "bad stuff happens" chart, (from now on known as the BSH chart), would roll a result that would kick it in. This tournament will be using the BSH chart for buildings/tunnels/caverns/sewers, and it doesn't have that result on it.
as for how night fighting would affect the board in 6th, it wouldn't. those of us that played in the badab campaign last year can tell you that the games consisted of a lot of moving without LOS the first couple turns, then a bloody terantino style melee for a couple turns, followed up with wiping up the giblets and capturing/destroying objectives. most hallways will never be more than 12" long when you factor in the sizes of the 2 squads facing off, so the cover saves gained from being a certain distance away will never kick in.
Aegwymourn wrote:I personally would really like to participate in something like this. Close quarter action is an awesome part of 40k that should get more game time.
The only thing I would like to point out is that a lot of the "optional" stuff with blips and the table should either be in or out for the whole tournament. I would hate for someone to place second because they used "optional" rules to make their games more fun while the person who placed first didn't because it would give him an edge. I think you should make a choice as TO to include them, not include them (you are running the thing after all), or put it to a vote before the tournament gets under way. Some people might not like that, but they are not forced to play either. Personally I would like to play with all the optional rules because the point is to play a very different scenario of 40k. If i wanted to play 40k just a little different i would set up some house rules for regular games to satisfy that.
i didnt say this in my earlier reply, but i really like your view on this; it reflects my opinion as well. it is a very fun and different scenario that's apart from standard 40k games. if you play an army whose strong suit is close combat, this type of game is for your army. you will absolutely love ZM games. orks, khorne, templar, wolves, blood angels....you're gonna love this scenario. love it. even with me using a vanilla codex, i had lots of fun making lists for ZM.
i would also really like to add in some of the optional rules from the get go. one that i forgot to mention was that all template weapons re-roll failed wounds. and if you, for example, fire a frag missile and it scatters, the moment the center hole makes contact with a wall, it stops there and you resolve wounds against whatever is under the template. that one's a really common sense understandable one, because the missile isnt going to pass through a wall and then blow up; no. it'll hit that wall and blow up, and strike everyone beside the wall with shrapnel, just like in real life.
If i get the boards done ahead of time, i do have a bag of spare 25mm bases that i could just spray paint red and blue and paint numbers onto for people to use as blips if they don't have their own. myself, i bought a set of these: Scanner Blip Tokens these cost me $6 for a pack of ten.
Re: tournament interest
I could see myself trying to deep strike in ZM. Sounds like a good opportunity to putz around with the Nemi/Varg combo, truth be told. "Ultimate Scouting"!

Just a note, Mike. I played Ben 2-3 times in Void battles vs his Deathwing, he NEVER DS'd, always walking them on.
I, on the other hand, lack a common sense gene, and routinely saw half my army materialize into walls, bulkheads, and in one case I'm pretty sure, outside the ship. (12" scatter, OW).

This is me every time I have tried to be clever with deepstrike. Even in regular 40k games. Its like somewhere someone is watching and enjoys seeing me look at dice with disbelief. Just like every time I roll two dice with Multi-Meltas more often than not its snake eyes or a one and a two.

Reminds me of when your unit of Broadsides failed to hit my Annihilation Barge.

Re: tournament interest
I know right. One of my favorites was a really old game when 3rd edition first game out. My hobby store was holding a "Battle for Blayden" event. I was playing SM versus some Tyranids on a Forest board (yay me >.>) and on the second turn all his stuff cleared the forest and i go to open up with assault cannons and roll all ones (which in 3rd makes them jam and they cannot fire). It was total awesome. Now i can laugh about it, but at the time i think my face twitched for a solid half hour.

Re: tournament interest
so i went to michael's today to buy the first set of sheets. much to my surprise at the till (because theyre dumb and didnt put any signs up at the shelves) the sheets are buy 1 get 1 free, so a table worth of 20"x30" sheets cost me only $10. yay. might send the wive tomorrow and have her buy the other 16 sheets sheets i'd need for 4 more tables.
Re: tournament interest
just to give an idea, this is 1/4 of a ZM table. 2'x2'. well, 2'x20" cause i couldn't hold the camera far enough away lol.
the greyed out areas will be the walls, 2" thick. the goal is to use a glue gun and attach 1" thick strips of smoothfoam where those grey areas are to help with line of sight, and frankly, make it look cooler cause its in 3D.
