2012/2013 Tournaments and a Modest Proposal
Hey all,
As of right now this is roughly my schedule for tournaments (I'm finding it's easier to plan ahead):
June 23rd, 2012 Escalation Tournament
Mid August 2012 1000pt/4rd Tournament
Sept 29/30 2012 Toon Con*(see below)
Mid Nov 2012 Badlist/Odd Point Tournament
Early Jan 2013 1500 or 2000 pt Tournament
Late April/Early May 2013 Team Tournament
I'm trying to have a mix of straight up tournaments and "fun" stuff like Tim's Highlander tourney, the Team Tournament or the Escalation Tourney.
Here's were I'm going with this. I'm running tournaments. Ben's run them, Robyn's run them, Tom/Matt/Tim/Mark/Adam etc....... Scott has organized a few events as well.
To clarify, I *like* running the tournaments but I'm finding 2 issues.
1) I don't get to play in them. A tip of my hat to Tim for running the Highlander event, I would have loved to have made it but sick kids.....
2) I'm finding less and less time to devote to doing everything. My job has gone from absolutely not busy at all, to me barely having time to do mundane stuff during the day, like lunch. Mike has been helping with the last few tournaments, but he's got a new kid and all too.
I'd like to get together a group of volunteers, a tournament committee if you will. Workng in pairs or trios, we could devide up tourney/events and free everyone up to a degree. If the tournaments all had similar game scoring, paint scoring, sportsmanship etc. they will be easier for players to follow and play in.
With say 8 event a year, and 12 volunteers, each would have to work 2 events a year. We'd also have input and ideas from more people and the opportunity to bring new ideas to the gaming community here.
We have a pretty amazing, varied gaming community here. There are a lot of different styles of play, and a lot of ideas for what would make an interesting tournament or event. my feeling is that there is room for all of them. If anyone is interested in going forward with this, please drop me a line via PM or email (suttobs@yahoo.com).

I don't mind helping out, or running the occasional thing. (I can do the 4 round jigger in August)
I already ponied up $10 for the 23rd though.

re tourney
Beau you do have a good idea. You do put up good events soooooo here 's my idea..... muahahahahahha..... You have the talent but you get NOTHING in return. If I was you I'd take a cut from the event earnings. A quarter to fifty percent I think would be fair. Prizes would be fewer, but not everyone can win. Doing some math, $25 to enter, must get at least 10 folks. Prize for tourney champ, painted, and a silly prize. And you still get a 100 bucks in your pocket. Not bad for a hobby.

Taking money is bad for a whole number of reasons... but ill touch on a couple basic ones.
It doesnt solve Beaus problem.. which is he'd like to play.
If the Den caught wind you were pocketing cash for using their free facilities.. im sure theyd be choked
These events thrive on prize support, if you start charging more or cut the prizes in half for yourself.. particiants will go down fast.
Ill help you out as much as i can.. and take on a few events. I know whats its like man. I distincly remember trying to do exactly the same thing 6-7 years ago. running most of the events and the bi g ones.. so if i wanted to play in a tourney.. i always had to go to out of town ones. It helped alot once i got on the gw payroll.. but more often than not i ended up using my rewards for further prize support anyway.
Once 6th hits we'll try to do some fun events .. maybe non tourney related.

Pretty sure the money grab thing was a joke because, I don't know, the evil cackle in the middle of the statement.

I'd like to get it to the point where we can run an event a month. Straight up tourney, fun tourney (Teams, escalation, highlander, etc), event (Apoc game, King of the mountain, Kill Teams, Combat partol, 3X3 Like we did a few months ago). The more people who are involved, the easier this becomes.
In the 5? events I have run, there have been somewhere around 35 different players, and I KNOW of several people who have wanted to play but its been on bad days etc. The last team tourney could have easily be 8-9 teams. (If Perils and Victorious Secret would have been able to show, plus Ben and John.... ). We have enough interest to do this sort of thing. I just want to make it easy for others to go, "I'd like to run an XYZ tourney, how do I do that?" I think this would make things easier and better.

OH GOD! That'd be epic. If we up the fee a little bit, I could rent a grill and we could wrap the tournament up with a STEAK DINNER. I grill a mean steak (CPoC fundraisers are good practice) (Edit: Or if someone has a semi-portable large-ish BBQ... We'd put it in the lot behind Darren's, and give Darren a grata steak dinner.)

re tourney
I don't want to steals beaus thread but honestly I was thinking after harvest about having a high roller instant death 40k tourney. It would be in the basement battle bunker, 100 or 50 enter fee, 2k list, you lose-your out, winner takes all. And the best part is after the tourney I'd roll out the grill and put the rib eye on, (if they survive past harvest). I would of course take a small fee from the entry fee to pay for the booze. Thoughts???!!!

50-100 entry fee is making it too much like gambling. I bet it'd be fun but I wouldn't enter.

not to mention his crazy ass lives on a farm in butt-puck no where over an hours drive outta the city. real nice house, but too bloody far.
here's a suggested revision:
high roller instant death 40k tourney.
Location: farmer jimmy's basement
battle bunker
fee: jimmy pays everyone $100 each for fuel costs to come play.
scale: 2000pt list
rules: every game is an elimination round to a last man standing.
After party: jimmy rolls out the
grill and sacrifices beef to the group.
in exchange, jimmy can show off his nice house and how much the missus crushes him under her iron thumb.
thoughts???

I'm down with the high roller tourney with the steaks, even if its gotta be brought down to the $25 range to make it more accessible. mmm BBQ ftw.
folks that are eliminated can play fun games or chase cattle while the srs bdnis is taken care of.
an hours drive is like $5 in the v-dub, and its got 3 empty seats most of the time. 3 total cupholders tho, so one of joos is SOL for liquids.

cupholders?! you're so a cityslicker; us from small farmer towns learned to master the drive with one hand and poor vodka/pop with the other into a cup cradled between our legs while doin a buck ten down the grids
