Re: judchic's paint thread
So thinking of using the new vanguard box as honor guard. Anyone got suggestions for making them look more honorguardly?

Well the first problem you will have is that as veterans the vanguard models all have a crux terminatus shoulder pad. So that has to go since as Honour guard they generally wouldn't wear that (depending how strictly they follow the codex astartus). Other than that there isn't anything specifically different between the two. Obviously the honour guard models have a bit more ornamentation, but with a decent amount of bitz that shouldn't be difficult. As far as I know there isn't any obvious way to model the difference between artificer and power armor.

Re: judchic's paint thread
I skimmed the relevant sections of the pdf I have for new codex and I don't see any mention of the crux terminatus. Perhaps it is in the fluff sections I don't have.
It used to be when a marine was inducted into the first company he was awarded the crux. It started off just with terminators first but IIRC they made it for all 1st company veterans in 3rd-4th I think? If you check the new models that is what the new right shoulder pad is.

Re: judchic's paint thread
the crux is given to any marine that's earned the privilege to wear a suit of terminator armour. honour guard are likely to have gained this honour, so they could still have those pads. the honour guard usually have a crux, small or large, somewhere on their armour. GW just makes it easier to descern the models apart by making stern/van have a pad with the crux so they stand out from the normal tactical/assault units that would look identical if you chose to model them without robes. in turn, they made honor guard models super fancy to make them stand out.
its up to you how you want to model them, which includes showing a crux pad or not.

Re: judchic's paint thread
That is true, they might retain their crux after moving from the 1st to the Honour Guard. Not overly familiar with them since Black Templars have never had them before. We always had Sword Brethren, which is similar I guess.

Are you gonna do the shoulder trim (generally bronze or silver) and the usual skull facepaint on the helmet?

Was thinking of using the skull face just for marking the sergeants. Any suggestions for painting the joints in the armor?

I'd hit the shoulder skull with a wash of Agrax or something, Just looks like a white blob.

I find armour joints annoying to paint.. I usually just get them with 2-3 layers of a dark wash.

Re: judchic's paint thread
Strong, clean work! Very neat! I think you should try ramping it up a notch as you've got this level down pat. My favorite part is the earth shading you've put into the metal on the morning star thingy. The shading is great, smooth work. I think if you thinned down some black wash and glazed it gently into the extreme recesses as almost a bit of black lining you'd be pleased. I also think if you popped the brightest edges of that metal jobber with the brightest metal paint you've got you'd like it even more.
Areas like the skulls could also benefit from this type of work.
Overall I think you should try popping the highlights up a step or to and adding the shadows in a stage or two as well. You're clearly ready if you're interested!
