Historic 40k battles
I know a fair bit about the general fluff associated with the 40k universe, but when it comes to the details im lost.
Im wondering if anyone has a list, or knows where i can find a list of larger campaigns fought against chaos, and in particular chaos daemons. I know there probably isnt much as the daemons codex is still pretty new, but any big chaos invasion would work. The specifics im looking for are:
1. It would be useful to have the inquisition involved
2. Must include Space marines. It would be cool if the chapters that were involved were a little vague
3. Must include Guard
4. I would like some history on the war
5. The type of terrain it took place in is important.
Let me know if you got anything =)

Re: Historic 40k battles
Biggest Daemon battle? 1st war for Armageddon.
Daemon prince angron shows up with 12 bloodletters, at the height of the fighting, starts decimating the space wolves and guard. 100 Grey knight terminators show up. Survivors? I do believe 2-3 terminators, and angron and his host are banished for a 1000 years back to the warp. Ouch!
There are a couple others. The destruction of Gheist, in the battlemissions book I think? Also a couple of other planets mentioned in the main rulebook, and the daemon codex.
Most super huge daemon attacks wipe out worlds though, so...
Oh, that guard dude, el'raheem, fought on a daemon world, managed to unite a bunch of desert people to fight back against the daemonic hordes. Ended up winning, world got virus bombed by the inq. anyway.

Thirsters. Blood-Thirsters. I am pretty sure 1st War of Armageddon would not have been quite so bad if Angron just showed up with 12 troops that can't assault on the turn they deep-strike.

Yea, i happened to skim over the first battle for armaggeddon and it was 100 years if i recall correctly. Minor detail though.
Re: Historic 40k battles
Ive always wonder about the 100 year demon banishment and where that came from. You find it in all sorts of fiction.. 40K, D&D is the same way, and I know for sure I've seen it in other books.
There must be some really old source out there that came up with the "kill a demon in the real world (I almost said prime material plane.. bad Robyn) and he;s banished for 100 years.. "
I must find out now.. my curiousity has been peaked.
What sucks though is I love the Worldeaters, and I love the Grey Knights.. I hate that battle.. I cant cheer for anyone

Re: Historic 40k battles
The black library might be a good source. The gaunts ghost series go into detail on a few chaos woulds. They dont contain space marines but are full of guard and inquisition. Likewise one of the grey knight books give good descriptions of chaos worlds but dont go into detail about the guard or marine units stationed in the system. Finally the ragnar blackmane series (specifically the spear of russ) Give a good account of a major thousand son plot, Guard defending the world and space wolf allies. Problem is this book might be too detailed for what you want.
I will have to look through my collection to find out the exact volumes and what detail they go into but they would give you good background that is not in the codexs and most players will not immediately recognize where the information came from. I can let you know tomorrow some more details as I will read the book tonight at work for something to do.

Re: Historic 40k battles
No, im trying to figure out the basing theme for my blood angels army. I want to make some bases and cast them up.
Thanks for the advice on where to hunt for fluff. I have read most of the gaunts ghosts, up to the last one or two. I actually just fond a copy of the Sabbat crusade by dan abnet. I think that it might have some goodies in it i can use as well. I have also read the space wolf books, but i want to stay away from the fluff that is in those.
As far as a new table Greg... im not sure. I will be getting back the one that i was building last summer, and i plan to finish it, but im not sure what ill do with it. Im tempted to make it a mordheim table, but i dont know. Well see how i like getting back into 40k.
