Hey everyone, I'm looking for a relatively affordable way to transport a guard army. The main issue is finding something big enough to carry ~10 tanks (LRs and Chimeras) and a couple valkyries) without spending more money than I did on the models themselves! Anyone have any economic and safe ideas?

I feel your pain, soldier. I use the tank boxes themselves to transport mine. I can fit ~4 tanks per box, wth the lid on if you don't have any ostentations turrets or tank commanders (If you do and they're removable it also works).
I also got ahold of a large cardboard box to put all the boxes in, just stack'em up and put'em in the box.
I keep all my infantry(Guards&Heavy weapon teams) in a larger box (Specifically the one my baneblade came in).

Vens/valks are where it gets complicated - Those buggers just don't fit in anything! I've resorted to just setting them in a box to use as a tray and balancing them on top of my pile o' army.

If you come up with anything better(and cheap), please let me know!

I've found the Molson Canadian 24 pack of cans cardboard case to be fantastic, although open-topped. However, not the fully covered box ones = too flimsy and awkward.

I can also fit 6 chimeras in the one side of one of the big GW cases, but its tight.

Order two extra large pizzas from Pizza 73 (they send them in a double box). You get a box that can hold about 10 tanks, and you get 2 pizzas to boot! Add in some bubble wrap and there you go.

This is the way I have been carrying my tanks anyway.

I had a good laugh at the pizza box idea. Simple AND delicious!

Anyone know if there is a place in stoon to pick up foam trays that you could cut in to?

I think Dragons Den has some. At least I've seen some there before. Just give them a call, or ask next time you're there. I don't know how much they cost however.

I posted as soon as I saw the thread.

But seriously these boxes are unrivaled for carrying tanks!

Are you talking about the Sabol trays? I know the Den sells that stuff (along with a few of their cases) - they're a very nice option but they are very expensive.

Man, that battlefoam stuff is also ridiculously expensive. $24 (on average) for one tray? I thought Sabol was expensive at around $9 per tray; but I guess there's no finer way to make your stuff travel.

Having looked around on the net at various option as far as foam is concerned, a lot of large pistol cases are available at a decent price with pick and pluck foam supplied for you. Another option I found are called the Seahorse Hurricane series of cases. And yet another option is from a company called Plasticase (www.plasticase.com). Some of their larger cases looked interesting.

Those sabol cases look fairly cheap to other specific gaming cases out there. I might actually consider that one, especially if they are available through Dragon's Den, as it would save shipping of another case, most likely from the states.

I started using a luggage suitcase, the type with wheels and extendable handle. A small one is only around $30 . As for foam walmart sells 2" thick foam pads but you would have to cut them yourself.

I had actually considered using luggage. I have a set with a large, medium and small suitcase, and I never use the medium one. It would be a decent size. The foam cutting could be a pita though. Since I have Monday off, I'll probably spend the day scouring the city looking for some possibilities.

I use a Sabol case myself, and it's a very nice case other than some small balance issues. A word of warning, if you get the battalion case, do not put books in the upper hatch. My space marines took a nosedive off a table once. lol
