Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
Here is the guard list i came up with. Ill throw down the unit, then give my reasoning behind it. This list is meant to be a competitive tournament list that hopefully will take all comers.
HQ
Company command squad
- 4 veterans 4x plasma gun
- commander (naked)
- officer of the fleet
- mounted in a chimera (no upgrades)
i think this is a pretty standard hq choice. The plasma shoot out of the chimera hatch. Officer of the fleet is used to help with those flanking units that can get too close to my armor
ELITE
Psyker battle squad
- 4x psyker
- mounted in chimera (no upgrades)
I think that this is an effective squad, and still keeping with the traitor fluff. Realistically i put them in to help deal with those monster nob squads. Reducing them to a 4 leadership should help control them, which is pretty important, especially if they are bikers. With the new cheese i have heard, where each biker has a different wargear combo, in order to make you wound each model once before taking any off, i think the nob squad is ont fo the most deadly squads you might face in a tournie. This tactic should also work against the other stupid unit that is based on the same rules... some kind of tau battlesuit unit.
TROOPS
Infantry platoon
Platoon command squad
- 4 vets 4x plasma gun
- commander (naked)
- mounted in chimera with turret heavy flamer upgrade
Infantry squad
- 9x guardsmen 1x flamer
- sergeant (naked)
- mounted in chimera with heavy flamer turret upgrade
Infantry squad
- 9x guardsmen
- sergeant (naked)
- mounted in chimera with heavy flamer turret upgrade
The purpose of these units are to act as a screen for the rest of the army, and to take objectives. The squads have minimal upgrades, because i hope to keep them in the chimeras. I gave the chimeras the heavy flamers to make them more effective at screening. The idea here is to help with the horde armies that try to zerg you. Make a wall, then flame anything that gets through the gauntlet
Veteran squad
9x vets 3x melta gun
1x veteran sergeant power fist
- mounted in chimera
Again the main role of these guys is to act as a scoring unit, while laying down some shooting to help deal with armor. The squad can do some damage in cc with the power fist. Could also help to screen with the other troop squads, but opted to keep the multilaser in hopes that i can keep them mobile
FAST ATTACK
Hellhound squadron
- 1x devil dog
Hellhound squadron
- 1x devil dog
my two main tank hunters. can also be used as sceening units, and with a blast can do some damage to power armor squads, and deepstriking termis
HEAVY SUPPORT
Hydra flak tank battery
- 2x hydra (no upgrades)
for the skimmers
Ordnance Battery
- 1x medusa enclosed crew compartment
Ordnance Battery
- 1x medusa enclosed crew compartment
The medusa's are my heavy hitters. I gave them the enclosed crew compartments mostly because i think the model is super awesome.
ALLIES
Grey knight squad
4x grey knights
1x justicar (psychic hood)
Took these guys partially because i want a couple forge world chaos marine models in my list. I also believe that they are a good addition because they can bring some much needed cc to the list. Also a big deciding factor was the fact that i could take a psychic hood on the justicar. With all the crazy psychic powers floating around out there i think it is a good choice, especially if i can use the old psychic hood rules because its out of the daemon hunters cosex. As an added bonus they could make a pretty effective objective holder, with the shrouding and increased survivability
So thats the list, let me know what you think. Comes out to exactly 1700 points

That seems like a pretty solid list. I was wondering with the lack of anything CC, but if things go as they should then nothing will be close enough to assault you.

4 plasma guns per squad in HQ and platoon HQ is dicey (*pun), especially at a 15pt upgrade (and only having a 5+ save!). In theory all right but rapid fire will be killin' your own dudes for sure. You should at least give a grenade launcher to your trooper squads, c'mon don't leave 'em hangin' holding thier lasguns in the wind!

Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
I know the Grey Knights look great on paper as close combat units.. but they will definitely under perform.. they are decent CC units, but I wouldnt say they are great. I know you want the psychic hood, but I would highly recoomend taking an Inquisitor instead. You could outfit his retinue for CC if you want, but I think in this case you looking for some modelling options. I didn't realize the Justicar could take a psychic hood, but makes sense. I dont think anyone usually odes becasue the grey Knights eventually have to get into the mix at some point and usually easier plopping in your Inqusitor and surrounding yourself in a retinue.
Like Ryan said, you should give those dudes with no weapons something.. even another flamer or a grenade.. just something.
Otherwise I think you have a fairly unique and stylized list. I think you should take a look at adding one squad of penal legionairres, only for the reason I think they'd fir in your list and owuld be fun for modelling purposes.

Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
Seems like a good all round list Cam. I am personally to lazy to paint all those vehicles, but it is very hard to kill, especially if you face a daemon army (daemons have a heck of a time getting through massed chimeras). For the grey knights, I find they can be very versatile, like the swiss army knife of units. They are strong enough to take out light to medium armoured vehicles and walkers, and have enough gun options to take on the same style of infantry. The justicar can take some sweet (and in some cases, 1 pt targeter for example, cheesy ones) options, and I love the (un)holy relic with Straken, So many strength 7 monstrous creature attacks on the charge, and stick a priest in, this combo (if it can survive initiative 5 or higher doom units) can wipe out most cc units. the big problem the unit faces is high cost, and the need to specialize. You cant afford to make the unit flexible for all comers, better to focus on one task. i think of all of the guard CC units and counter attack: if they can get through your guns, counter attack the stuffing outta them!

Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
Maybe ill have to look at an inquisitor retinue, and maybe add straken to the mix... it all depends on the points needed. That option would definitly give me some fun modeling opportunities. What irritates me about this though, is the fact that i would want a chimera for the squad, and it costs 70 pts in the daemon hunters book
Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
Straken was great in the old Deathworld book.. he is awesome in the new book.
This is a big part of my dilemna regarding Guard. I have half a Catachan guard army, and a full cadian army. I have a leman, hellhound, and a basilisk painted green.. and some unpainted tanks. If I play a guard list, Id really like to include straken, Marbo and Harker.. but then how do I go about modelling it.
I could easily take the catachan guys I have painted and use them as vets.. I have alot of plasma and melta guns. I could then fill out the rest of the army with cadian troops. What color to paint them though? I have two unpainted Chimeras and an Unpainted Leman.. if I painted them.,., wuold I paint them lik ethe other to make them catachan.. or to match the regular troops.. ugh.
I think an army thats was split down the middle in terms of color scheme would be weird. However, having the command squad and vet squads as catachans, then the rest of the troops as cadians would be ok. Its the vehicles that are a problem. I should just paint them all Grey or dark green and be done with it.. not match it.. but with three painted the easy path would be to paint them the same.. oh the head pain.

Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
You know, if you borrowed an airbrush it would make things allot easier. Just give em all a quick base coat... thats what i plan to do if i go ahead with this list.
Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
I have an airbrush... the actual painting is not a problem.. I jsut don't what to paint them to make it look cohesive. I like the paint jobs on the ones I have painted.. and the Leman I have is the first vehicle I ever put together and painted from scratch.
I'm just not keen on having a bunch of green tanks.. especially if I decide to have a regular game with my other guard.. which are painted white and gold. I dont think there's a solution where I can have everything work out. I'm either looking at painting all tanks green, or repainting the green ones Grey.. so the tanks match both catachan and cadian.
*sigh*

Most blatant and worst thread jack ever Robyn.
Cam, back on topic for you, don't fall for all those snazzy special characters. You don't need em'. Trust in you guns, but give your guys guns. Think about this: Your Lt.'s chimera blows up 5 guys wounded on threes and 5+ saves, and they all have plasma guns, those are some expensive dead dudes. Consider much cheaper and versitile GL's then you'll have extra points for some Autocannons or such. Don't listen to these others, listen to me . I can't even remember how long I've been playing guard.

Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
Thanks for the tips Ryan, i will see what i can do with the list.
Re: Traitor guard mech list 1700 pts
Wow, called out. I could start another thread about what to paint my army, but that seems weird now.
Back to the list, I dont think there's any problem with the special character in the new book.. alot of them are bargains.. Marbo.. for his points can eaily cause some paranoia, especially if there are some terminators lurking around. Straken is also a terrifying CC unit if your looking for a counter attack force.. and I think their costs are both deals.
I think for Cam's list though he;'s taking a serious modelling approach to it.. the new guard book is so diverse though that everyone reading this will probably have a different opinion on units. Youve got alot of work ahead of you, thats for sure!

Good point Robyn. The new books all seem to be very versitile for what any one person wants to do list and model wise. You want all mans, do it, you want all tanks, you can do it.
