Learning game for interested player

So I'm setting up a teaching game for a friend interested in 40k and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for the 2 test lists.
1250 lists
Chaos lord mos, power sword, plasma pistol, aura of dark glory, gift of chaos
5 terminators mos, 3 axes, mace, fist, reaper auto cannon and fnp icon
10 marines mos, 2 flamer, mace, icon of excess, rhino all ccw
10 marines mos, 2 meltagun, axe, icon of excess, rhino
5 havoks 2 ml 2 ac mos
7 raptors 2 mg, sword, mos and icon of excess
Vs
Pedro
5 terminators assault cannon
10 stern guard, lightning claw, melta bombs, 4 combi melta, droppod
5 sniper scouts
5 sniper scouts
Land speeder heavy bolter, typhoon ml
Thunder fire cannon
5 devistators 4 ml

Nothing crazy but gives a good idea on most rules. Might try n add a psyker or two. Points aren't set I'm willing to go to 1500 if it works better.
And he wants a slaaneshy list so that's why the icons n marks are everywhere.

I think something like double AoBR might work better. A bunch of orks on foot, a bunch of muhrines on foot, with 2 dreds to introduce the vehicle rules.

Sternguard are kinda like, "These guys can drop wherever and just kill anything" type of thing that might not be so much fun.

True enough. Maybe dread n something else then.

like mark suggested; sternguard might be "too much" for a beginner, what with all the rules they have for their ammo and such. maybe swap them for a vehicle or a walker? do the points mesh well for that?

Going to be a few things that squad clocks in a 330ish. Thinking a dread (maybe in droppod) and maybe swap out Pedro for more lesser things.

I would second the more basic the better approach. If he is just getting into the hobby it wouldn't hurt to make them much faster at lower points as well. I know the idea of playing only one game over a couple of hours can throw some people.

Simple is the way to go. I have done this a couple times in 5th and once in 6th edition.

The less special powers, weapons and moves the better.

The best one I did was 2 Space marine tac squads a rhino and HQ against an equivalent Ork army of deffkoptas, boys, nobs and a boss. It was quick and by the last couple of turns my opponent was playing by himself without any input from me.
