For January's "Surprise, it's Chaos!" Tournament:

Best Overall- Mike B./Rhaevyn (Chaos Marines of Tzeentch)
Best General- Adam W./canadin (Chaos Marines)
Best Sports- Mark H./Lore Weaver (Necrons)
Best Painted-Ben M./Spamus (Deathwing)
Fav. opponent- Mark. H/Lore weaver
Fav. Army- Alex/ ShenkyRambo (Orks)

We had lots of door prizes as well. I thought things went well, and the new missions overall were a success. Apologies for the little SNAFU's (I'll have to get my butt in gear earlier next time) and big thanks to everyone who helped with prep, table setup, judging, etc. Big thanks to all the players today as well!

Comments and criticism are always appreciated. Feel free to drop me a line on the forum, via PM or email (suttobs@yahoo.com).

5/12 were Chaos Marines, kinda took me by surprise. We were an EC army away from having all colors. (Drew and Mike were pure or almost pure Tzeentch, Candi was mostly Plauge and Tom and Adam were mostly Khorne)
Don't know if you wanted the games reported for the league, I get you a list if you want. Off the top of my head 7-8 of the players are in the league.

Saw a few minor quibbles to tweak.

A few of the missions. The Evacuation mission looked like fun, but I think was impractical for the tournament. Pillage worked well, as did the PAWG missions. The std missions worked well, I just feel they are getting old. The "1 table, 1 mission" system worked well though.
A better system for "bounties". The system I had for bounties (basically prizes for each table, like the game with most combined KP, etc) was hit or miss. Several worked well with the missions. Others seemed forced. Given some time I think I can do better.
Slight tweaks to the schedule. I think 15 minutes could be added to each round fairly easily, and still have us out at the same time.

Personal highlights for me:
Ben's Contemptor
Mike and Alex's Armies
Drew's "Defiler"Smile Sorry buddy, I forgot to grab mine for ya!
Drew and Dan finishing their game (a full 7 turns) in just over an hour. Drew taking the game to a draw with 2 models on the board.
Tim saving the genetor before they even got to the shooting phase is the Evacuation mission.
Mark's scarab eating the tank convoy in the Desert Convoy mission

There was an exceptionally epic moment in my game against Adam (Canadin).

He shot his Havoc's at Anrakyr, who was now on foot with one wound left.

He had 4 dudes with Autocannons, earned himself 8 hits and 7 wounds. (Outstanding!) Followed up by Anrakyr saving all 7.

Come my turn, Anrakyr charged a scoring unit off an objective.

(Anrakyr managed to stand up 3 times that game, much to Adam's dismay).

Yes, I would like to thank Beau again for running it, as well as my 3 opponents (Dan, Ben and Mike) who made all of my games enjoyable affairs. Any chance we could get a scoring breakdown Beau? Congratulations to Mike on a well-earned victory and kudos for playing with Thousand Sons!

My suggestion would be to take the "Favorite Opponent" nods and use that as a sportsmanship bonus (5pts?) for determining the sportsmanship prize.

So lets say you score 27/30 on sportsmanship. That 27/30 goes towards your overall tourney score.

You get named Favorite opponent twice. For the purposes of "best sportsmanship" your score is 37.

Or you could use it to break tie-breakers?

Adam, you must have kicked some serious ars in the 2nd and 3rd game. You only got 12 or so in our game.

I agree, we need more time. The first tourney I played, 2 games got stopped short on the 3rd turn. I as playing swarm Nids, so it is understandable. This time, with mechanized Orks, I got stopped on the 3rd turn twice again. 1500 points needs 2 hours a game.

I need to pull out the paint and brushes again. Those painting scores are sweet soft points.

He did almost as well his last 2 games as Mike did his first two. Scores were close as noone went 3-0, several 2W-1Tie players tho. To be honest, Mike was running away with first place, and best general thru the lunchbreak, but Tim kinda put the ki-bosh on that in game 3:)

Adam was 11-17-20 in BP, Mike was 19-19-5 if I remember correctly. Tim's was similar but the middle game was his "weak" game.

As far as time goes, I think we can trim 30 mins from setup/painting judging, trim 15 or so from lunch, and add 45 to the end, that would add 1:30, or :30 to each game. That said a game that's only thru turn 3 at 1:30, would get a turn, maybe a turn and a half added. I'd also be concerned as that that's the tournament from Opening (actually Darren is opening early for us) and gives the winners 15 min to cash in their prizes and get the 20% off he does on tournament days. Theres the possibilty of dropping an additional :15 from lunch, but that's tight unless we order in (which I totally dont have an issue with)

90-105 minutes should be the perfect amount of time for tournie game at 1500 points. At the very least.. after 90 minutes you should be on or finishing your fifth turn. Time should always be an important factor .. play fast, fast, fast!

Yeah I agree. It's a skill. With a little bit of cooperation from your opponent games can be "sped up" quite a bit. One can begin their movement on one side of the table while their opponent is finishing things up on the other side. One can move and add their runs at the same time (with their opponent's permission, of course). Little things like that can shave a lot of time off a game.

I have no problem shaving some time off other areas to speed things up (like I said, there are definate areas time can be added/subtracted) I think 15 min can be added to each game very easily. Anything past that and we're either starting earlier or finishing later. It is a skill, but by the same token Guard/Orks/Nids are nearly ALWAYS going to take longer. (Not much longer, but somewhat so).

Revised schedule would be something along the lines of:

10-10:30 setup
10:30-12:30 Round 1 (includes Round 1 setup/deployment etc)
12:30-2:30 Round 2
2:30-3:00 Lunch
3:00-5:00 Round 3
5:00-5:30 Awards and cleanup

Paint judging would be done during the rounds.

Thank you....

and now I get to look like a bit of an ass.

Was going thru the scoresheets and found a few errors

Tom's Battlepoints were 6 too high.

Slightly more concerning, Tim's Paint score was recorded wrong, 28 not 25, this pushed him from 96 (a tie for third or fourth) to 99 (second by an eyelash over Ben). Thankfully no overall winners changed.

Sorry for the screw up.. Going forward, I'm going to have a second set of eyes double check the spreadsheet.

That was an amazing game. And actually Anrakyr killed practically all of my scoring models (the berzerkers and the marines). I also found it great when your Destroyer Lord Charged my Daemon Prince who passed minshackle scarabs on a 5 (1,1,3) and then beat down on your lord. Altogether the best game I've had in a while.

And the scenario was very interesting (DOW, but different), and again, I have to thank Beau for a great event! Very Happy
