annoyed with the rules
arghh! i've just found out that my deathwing can't be used in the league, which means i've got to start another army. awhile ago i was going to do world eaters so i bought a box of berserkers. but i'm not sure i like chaos too much. now i'm thinking of doing a blood angels successer chapter made almost entirely of assault marines insted of world eaters made entirely of berzerkers to go along with my deathwing. (which is made entirely of terminators. detecting a theme anyone? ) i also thought it would be cool to use the vangard veterans and regular metal veterans as my squad sergeants. hmm, i wonder how much this will all cost me lol.

deathwing uses terminators and for recon games you can't use any models with a 2+ armour save.

Re: annoyed with the rules
The league is over in less than a week, so as much as I'd love your $5, I'd hold off until the next kick at the can. The next league should be starting up around Sept 23-30th, depending on how long the playoffs take.
What league rules are you annoyed at? You can definitely use a Deathwing army for the league, but you can't use them for a recon game if that's your concern. Recon games are meant to be similar to the old 40K in a Flash rules, simulating an advance scout force getting intel and info about the enemy. If the sense of the league format, it wouldn't fit in that Terminators were doing advanced scouting work.
There are still tons of options for recon level games in the marine codex. If it comes down to you not wanting to have any non-terminator units in your army, then you can always just wait and accept strategic challenges when people offer them. You can earn recon points with a painted force and by playing players you haven't played in your last three rounds. Usually the first 2 weeks iof league play is taken up by recon games as people gather up points then start issuing strategic challenges.

Re: annoyed with the rules
whoa, a marine with NO marines? Thats kinda cool actually, i'd love to see how well that works. So are terminators a troop/scoring unit for deathwings, then?

Re: annoyed with the rules
I played Dark Angels for a while and ya, a pure deathwing army cannot be a recon army.
As an idea, you could start a Ravenwing army. If you buy the Ravenwing box sets, you get 6 bikes, 1 attack bike and 1 Landspeeder.
In the box, you get enough bits to turn the Landspeeder into the one that the special character drives that allows you to take Bikes as troops. However, thinking about it, you still cannot play a "pure" ravenwing army in a recon game.
Overall, for a recon Marine army, all you will need is about 20 marines (2 troop boxs), 2 Rhinos/Razorbacks, and a small squad of Ravenwing bikers.
You are right though....in the end, to play a strategic game you need to spend $$$.
If you wanna save some $$$ on troop boxes, check out Ebay....you can usually save 15 to 25% over what Dragon's Den charges, however, watch the shipping costs as they can kill ya if you are not careful.

Re: annoyed with the rules
It's definitely a niche army, and one that does look pretty cool on the table. It can definitely be tricky though, as the model count for your army becomes very low, every kill your army takes is tough. There are no expdendable units, thats for sure.
Most deathwing armies will get a strong usage out of drop pod dreads as well, especially for anti-armor. In reality, any of the heavy slots are good choices for the army, especially landraiders, but with the high cost of your troop units, Landraiders eat up the space for some valuable termies.
You definitely won't win all your games out there, especially with so much AP weaponry and things running around ignoring armour saves. However, I agree 100% that it's a fun army to play.
I've accumulated 16 World Eaters terminators myself. Maybe there'll be a chaos termie list surface one day.. but that's pretty wishful thinking.
It's to bad that the Dark Angels can't use the new storm shields, if anyone should get the ability to have tough ass termies, they sure do.

Oh ya, and as another "poke in the Deathwing's eye", the new Terminator Cyclone missle launcher is Heavy 2, not heavy 1. Check for any Dark Angel's update FAQ's on GW's website. I think I saw something on there that let you take advantage of some of the newer rules....especially the upgraded "Machine Spirit" rules.

it's a very fun but hard army to play. i haven't hated a game yet like i have with other armies. DA should definately have the 3++ storm shields but i guess we have the advantage that we can mix assault with tactical termies.System Commander wrote:It's definitely a niche army, and one that does look pretty cool on the table. Re: annoyed with the rules
Begin rant: There was a suggestion that one could save money by mail ordering GW products online. This is probably true as due to the weak British Pound and US Dollar Canadians can get some good deals. You might be able to save a few dollars here and there. If you purchase a whole army you might be able to save $50, or even more! My question to you is, "Where are you going to play?" Darren provides an excellent gaming area, and beautiful terrain at no charge to you. In addition, he donates some prize support to the 40K and Fantasy leagues and stocks practically the entire GW range. He is not under obligation to do any of this and it all comes out of his pocket. Think about that the next time you consider ordering GW product online. Rant over.
