Fast marine
Ive got so many marines kicking around now I thought Id try and paint as fast as I could using foundation paints. Ive never painted a yellow figure so opted for the Imerial fists to give the Iyanden Darksun foundation a try. The figure took about ten minutes and consisted of:
1) base coat of Iyanden Darksun over black primer
2) wash of Badab Black
3) second wash of Badab Black in recesses becasue I was sloppy in step one
4) touch up of Iyanden darksun
5) highlight of a mix of Iyanden Darksun and Bleach Bone to edges
6) Bleached Bone to shoulder pads and eagle, and Scab Red to pad outline
Of course, Im not done and still need to do the backpack and gun but all I plan on doing is leaving it black and giving it Grey or dark blue highlights. However, my goal was to do it fast and sloppy and damn do washes and foundation make that job easy. Ten minutes! I think that daemon army will be fast to paint up when I get round to it.

Re: Fast marine
Please Robyn, i beg of you, get better lighting and a tripod! Really you can buy cheap table lamps for like $9. True light bulbs are probably another $4 for 2. You should have at least 2 lights if not 3. A cheap tripod probably costs less than you spend on beer and wings every thursday night. And use a white backdrop! It pains me to look upon these pictures, and you do yourself a disservice.
Re: Fast marine
Nice job for a 10min job...
Cam, where do you buy the lamps from? I want a decent one and have refrained going to walmart... but if thats where to get em, I'll go

Re: Fast marine
Hey, here's a little somehting for everyone looking to make their pic's better. First do like Cam says and get a tripod. They're super cheap. A better light set up is great for anyone who wants to post better pics as well. I went out and bought three crappy clip on lights and some full spectrum bulbs. Problem with my setup is they're not bright enough and I think I will get some proper lamps that can handle 100w instead of 40 like I got. But here's a link to an article on using photo manipulation to change color levels and crop up images. Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to see Robyn's messy desk area anymore? In the article is a link to a free downloadable prgram called GIMP which is what the article describes in great depth how to use to make pic's of mini's look better.

There's loads of aticles on phtography and light setup on a budget etc. on that site. I reccomend it heartily.

Re: Fast marine
Lookin'g pretty good for a ten minuter', now imagine if you would have spent 20min. You should try using the devlan mud wash for yellows, it might be worth comparing final results.
Thanks for the link Scott. Interesting and helpful. I think I'll just get you to take the pics of my figs from now on. Thanks.

Re: Fast marine
I was using the Iyanden Dark Sun on a lot of my Orc stuff and it looked pretty decent after a hit of Devlan Mud (Why does Gee-Dub use such gay names?), and I think you should try it on those marines.
Imagine if you spent 60 minutes on those figs! I imagine my computer would break down like in that movie "Pi" when the computer solved the True Name of God and broke down because it couldn't handle all the pixellated beauty of God's light and love being transmitted into it's circuits. That's what would happen to my computer I think.
Thanks for not doing that Robyn, as even this crappy laptop was able to process the ugly images you put in your post. DAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMNN!

Re: Fast marine
Matt, i just went to canadian tire, they have small black table lamps that work just fine for $9. Make sure you get good bulbs though... i think Scott called full spectrum.. i think the ones i use are truelight or something like that.
Just have to say that Pi is a fantastic movie and that it is a must watch.

Re: Fast marine
Have all my pictures been crappy? I took these at the painting table under crappy lighting along with the terminators, and said as much, but I usually use my set-up in the basement. I just wanted some fast progress pictures to go up and didn't have time to do the full gambit. I have 3 lights and a tripod. I just wanted a fast picture.. Ive learned my lesson though.
No more progress shots for you, 1 year!

Re: Fast marine
Nah the finished stuff has been fine. I think if you GIMP'd these or fixed the levels another way they might be fine to. Hang on here.. UUUNNNNNNNNHHHHHH.....
Is this any better? I tried to fix the levels but it' didn't look much different to me. Please don't rob us of the System Commander's WIP's! Please.....?

Nice work Scott! I hope that took you an hour to make the pic smaller but otherwise exactly the same. I will say this for all of us on this board, that we appreciate you making this a better place.

Dude, I am on salary and if you brak it down vs. the hours I have put in I haven't been getting paid since about July. But it is kind of sweet to not even bother trying to look busy nowadays. Boy I hope my boss doesn't start playing 40k....
