New Nids Codex
One word: underwhelmed.
I need to give it a few more reads but my general feeling is one of face-to-palm. No new book for 5+ years.
I guess I will reserve final judgment for when I see it on the table.

It was the plan, the only plan. I don't change armies because one is under powered.
I was just hoping for more. Much more.

Re: New Nids Codex
I'm actually fairly confused by the new nid book, the trend lately has been to drive sales by giving a " must include" big kit. The new $100 flyer(crone?) kit is not very good, unlike helldrakes, riptides, wraithknights, Hunter/Stalkers and whatever that ugly DA skimmer was.
I fully expected it to be a flying transport that disgorged rippers or something ridiculous

I also think the Hunter/Stalker isn't on the same level as the others

At least with the Hunter/Stalker you can field it as either of those two, or a Rhino, or a Razorback with some magnets.

the skimmer That passed out Cover saves wasn't bad until tau/eldar/Daemons made cover saves a waste of a entry in the rulebook.
edit, and helldrakes.

New 'nid dex is great. It's powerful enough but most importantly gives you A LOT of creative and fun builds, which is what other codexes should strive for. Conclusion: STAHP WHINING.

Heldrakes came out first, it was never good, and ugly to boot. It is the Sarah Jessica Parker of GW model

I'll have to admit one thing: the three strong Dakka-fex brood looks terrifying from what I'm seeing in the MWG bat-rep. 36 twin-linked Str 6 shots? Uhg.

Re: New Nids Codex
I feel there is alot of potential in this book. I was never a multi-tervigon double-stacked FNP Drop-pod-DoM gouda slinging git, so I'm not as bothered by the changes. I have always played Tyranids with the mindset "Quantity has a quality all of its own"
The big problem here is we're all comparing this book to Tau and Eldar, which let's face it, have some pretty scary power-builds at times, moreso if it's a combo ally army. One can build an entirely sensible list though. If we compare to the other 6th ed books that have come out, it's pretty much in the same area. And of course the Helldrake is just a thing that's out there that just needs to be dealt with. I would need to do some playtesting but I'm pretty sure on a 1v1 situation a Crone should reliably take down a Drake. There isn't an "I win button" combo or unit in the book (that we know of yet) and that seems to put certain people in a bad mood. Allow me to get my tiny violin. I honestly feel that if you NEED to use the OP netlist style combos and other such lameness to do well, maybe you aren't a very good player. But that's just me. I'd rather have a fun close game that I lose than ROFLstomp the other player in 4 turns because that's no fun for me. I have better things to do than toss dice until I win.
Inadvertent mini-rant over. We now return you to your regularly scheduled whinging.

Re: New Nids Codex
I just finished watching the MWG batrep, and Mawlocks are looking really solid with their "unit of one" status letting IB basically just put them on auto-pilot. The Dakka-fex squad is a silly number of T6 wounds that runs around throwing out an even sillier amount of Str 6 shots. I don't like how clumped he kept his army, the the outcome of the match was freaking close, and possibly would have swung in his favor on turn 6.
Verses armies with an abundance of ignores cover, I think you're just going to have to bum-rush them. Once you make melee you don't have to worry about IB tests, and most of the Ignores Cover armies REALLY don't want to be in melee. I'd still be partial to having a Tervigon in there as an outflanker, because of taking objectives near table edges. That could be an interesting thought, actually: place your objectives in the enemy's deployement 6-9" from the side board edges to grab mid-late game with a surprise Tervigon.
Doom was total cheese, don't really agree with some of the other nerfs though (50% cost increase on the Prime, Ravener's loosing an attack). For squads like Hormaguants, a strong core of Synapse is beyond essential, though.
Now that I've seen that the codex still runs pretty scary, I'm looking forward to getting some games in against it.

Re: New Nids Codex
raveners didnt lose an attack. they lost rerolls. any 2 pairs of tyranid weapons gives extra attack.
2 pairs scytal = +1 attack
1 pair scytal and 1 pair rending claws = +1 attack
lashwhip+bonesword and 1 pair scytal = +1 attack
so 4 attack raveners are still 4 attacks. they did lose 1 spinefist shot as their base attacks are down.

Re: New Nids Codex
The scything talons rerolls was a big loss to the Trygon. I'd gladly pay the 10 points to get the rerolls, as it always killed more stuff.
Improved units:
Harpy (nowhere to go but up with that thing)
Venomthrope
Mawloc
Carnifex
I was dreading having to pay for a dataslate but maybe I am looking forward to it now.
