Possible league/tournament idea
I am throwing an idea out there to see what the general response is. Constructive criticism is welcome.
I entered a Magic tournament years and years ago and it followed this format. I think we could run 40k in this same format.
It starts out with random pairings and each player will play 2 games against randomly selected opponents. At the end, there are 4 possibilities: 2 wins, 2 losses, 1st game win 2nd game loss, and 1st game loss, 2nd game win.
With those records, we goup each player: Group A, B, C, and D. Then each group plays off against each other in single elimination games until 1 player remains from each group. Then those remaining 4 players have 1 game against each other person. In those 3 games, the top 4 can be determined.
If we could get 16 players, each player would be guaranteed at least 3 games, and the winning four players would play 7.
The first 3 games could be done as a tournament event but I think this would work better as a league, giving generous time limits and able to find time fo anyone, regardless of tight schedules.
Also, each round could allow players to change their lists (preliminary 2 games, playoffs, and final 3) and also increase points, and even change scenarios.
What do you think?

You'd need to run it over 2 days, which is logistically tough.

Actually, It would make it interesting if you did the prelim as a tourney. run a league as normal and then run a second single elim tourney a month later to determine final ranking.
You could do something similar by doing groups of 4, but you wont end up with a perfect ABCD grouping.

Re: Possible league/tournament idea
If we have exactly 16 people and don't accept draws, there are only 4 possible results (as I mentioned in the original post) and we'd have exactly 4 groups of 4.
I wouldn't want to do it as a tournament, I was just mentioning it as a possibility. If we got 16 people on the list, dollars to donuts, someone will bail at last minute.
I don't think there is one day that we could get everyone to agree to. Having it as a 'play when you can' event, while giving time limits (maybe 2 weeks to get a game done?) would be more inclusive.
I am pitching this as a real idea but not immediate. I would have to talk to people who are running upcoming events and the league and work out a good time. Also, I'd have to type up rules, think up scenarios, etc.
Anyone who responds to this, please answer this.....if I launch this event, would you play In it?

Re: Possible league/tournament idea
when I said groups of four I was talking bout the inital (games versus 2 opponents part).
I think the final would be where to do a tournament, if at all. The first part, not so much a tourmament as a big game night, if that. Logistically, your way makes more sense.
I definately like the idea, and would be in. I think the inclusicve part is a selling point, and as it has players playing those of like skill levels, it makes games closer overall, and IMHO, more fun.

I could host a games day/night and invite players that signed up to show up. The people who don't/can't show up could be paired against each other or whatever. It'd be a good opportunity to get the league/event (whatever you wanna call this) kicked off and speed along the result of the first game, maybe first 2 games.
If I do this, every battle will have tiebreakers (KP or whatever) and secondary tiebreakers, and if there is still a draw, force the players to play one more turn. No draws. Period. A draw screws everything up.
