so last night, i was on bolter and chainsword, and this kid mentioned he was reading the newest pdf updates and saw that vanguard sergeant Culln, an I.C., has no jump pack in his wargear listing, but he's listed as jump infantry.

So i emailed FW last night asking them if they made a boo boo on the wargear listing like they did on Haas with his artificer armor. (so thats both IC missing the last piece of wargear in their entry; someone copy and pasted and missed a line me thinks)

This morning i get a reply saying "Vanguard Veteran Sqaud automatically come with jump pack, so Culln does
have a jump pack, as he is also listed as Jump Infantry and leads the
said squad." (yes, that's copy and pasted, so yes they typo'd in their reply)

For those not familiar with the space marine codex and Vanguard Veterans, they actually start off as foot infantry, and we pay 10pts per model in the unit to give them all jump packs.

So i'm not sure what to make of the reply i got. I'm debating between the responder either doesn't know codex space marine that well so they're not aware they goofed in their reply, or, they have knowledge of newer 6th Ed rulesets that are going to be changing Vanguard Veterans to start with jump packs. (and hopefully be damn well cheaper)

Fun Fact; taking Culln to be a Vanguard Sergeant, and 4 jump pack dudes with a pistol and chainsword only, comes to a sickening 225pts for 5 assault marines who can assault the turn they deep strike onto the board. Just a normal Sergeant in that same squad costs 175pts. and a normal assault marine squad of 5 dudes is 100.

Being able to assault on deep strike is a fairly potent ability. Well worth doubling the cost of a squad. especially because they will almost always earn their points back.
And it only gets more efficient the more models you buy. Were i to purchase this unit, i would probably go with a full 10 models.

Drop in, assault, or Multi-assault and f*ck up your enemy's backfield with impunity.

Its still really risky. You deep strike in and have to make sure your close enough (6") to launch an assault. You still scatter a d6.. So with a crappy result.. you either get to close and mishap right off or when you place your guys in a circle... or your to far away and are stuck waving in the breeze.

Ive never seen them devastating in a game. The potential to be awesome definitely exists but .. im just not a risky pkayer unless im behind or in trouble

DS in general makes me nervous ... unless there are homing beacons or icon to help.. because if i dont have those.. i will always mishap..

It seems to me he should have the pack automatically.. ive never seen vanguard fieldedvwithout them..

you're correct on the misshap thing. but i figure its like going for it on 4th and 2.

You're iether a hero or an idiot, depending on the outcome. works for me every time in Madden, not so much on TV. lol.

Hehe.. exactly.

I learnt to hate DS with the daemonhunters. It was a novelty because every gk unit in the book could ds.. even ifvthe mission didntvley you.

Missions werevalways varied.. so some would llow ds, some infiltrators.. some misaions wiuld have non.

I would stupidly keep ds ing in thinking i was making use of the rule.. but i was always mishapping or going off the board.

Chaos though.. No scatter!

They scatter 2D6 unless your using the blood angel codex. But Culln is vanilla so he'd scatter 2D6. Heroic Intervention, which is the power that let's you assault, also has to be declared before you roll for scatter, and if you activate that power, they can't shoot when they arrive, so if you scatter to far to assault your target, you can't shoot at them either; you stand around like an idiot.

And if you take Culln as the sergeant, you never want a 10 man squad; the special rule he gives the squad is if they're outnumbered in melee (reason you'd field them as 5 not 10) then they always re-roll failed to-hit rolls. Since most squads you'll assault will be 10 models, and 1 round of assault usually kills at least 1 enemy model, taking 8 or 9 guys just to get the twin-linked effect in melee won't work either. And to help that they'll usually be outnumbered, they're also Stubborn too, so they make leadership tests with no negative modifiers.

see this right here . this is where GW shows that its a figurine company that happens to produce a game. the answer to so many rules questions is "the model comes with X, so its X" What base is X unit supposed to be on? the one that comes in the blister.

its hit and miss really. any store employee, is guaranteed, retarded. you cant argue this. it's a scientific law. they dont hire smart people for the GW stores. they turn them away.

the support staff that answers emails though, 'usually' you get a smart one that knows what they're talking about and the reply is intelligent. not this time though. i don't think the responder is a Forge World staff member that actually plays space marines at all; they have staff that only play the xenos armies, and this could have been one of them.

but if that's the case, they should not have been the one to respond in the first place then; let someone that knows the codex answer the question.
