I strongly reccomend the Vallejo Model Colour. There are some loose paints down at the den and ytou can buy a set or two of the Flames of War Vallejo sets. I like the high pigment concentration (near the foundation paint levels) but mostly I find the historical colours to be nice and muted vs. the game colours fo GW stuff. That's my two cents.

Depends on what you want. If you are planning on painting for tabletop with a large army in mind, I think GW's range will do ya good= brighter tones will really help little figs pop. If you are looking at quality over quantity, go for vallejo, all I have heard is good things.
I personally have a trillion gw paints, but mostly cuz that was how I rolled, and now I feel to crotchety to spread my proverbial painting wings. I really should try some vall. though, they sound stuper-awesome'ness.

GW foundation paints are the bomb for base coats. I'm also a huge fan of the GW washes.

Re: what paints is everyone using?
well before i left for afghan i was talking with Scott about getting really good at painting, so im looking to do a quality over quantity right now
i have a TON of nids to be put together but i have some blood angel figs that i want to paint to really high quality or at least practice on the aobr models that i have.
the gw ones seem pretty damn expensive per paint, and i dont think they have a giant set i could buy.
im even tempted to start dipping alot of the little/mass amount of nids and concentrate on doing some really high quality painting on certain models. fex,trygon/mawloc, lichtors, tyrant etc etc

GW does have a new mega set with the new flip top bottles for all their range. For an all inclusinve range the GW set isn't a bad route to go. Quality wise GW is great, and pretty consistent too. The only paint I can say with certainty I hate is the reaper master series. I am not a fan of the P3 range in general, but I do like using some of their stuff really thinned down for glazes. But if you look for opinions on th epainting boards you can find super top painters who will all vouch for all the brands. Even crappy ass reaper. There's a crazy Russian Chick with her own DvD and a couple slayer swords who swears by using synthetic brushes and says people should throw their brushes out after every mini rather than buying decent sable brushes too. She's a whack job though. Great painter. Decent tits too!
Anyway, don't discount any of the brands without trying some yourself is what I am saying I guess. Buy a pot or two of P3, Reaper, and Vallejo to go with GW down at the den before committing to a big time paint purchase based on other peoples say so. All the paint you try wil have strenghts and weaknesses. Even crappy reaper at least comes in some pretty cool colours. It is =I=censor=I= paint though.

i like the gw paints, but theres no giant set anymore unfortunately, i mean if they did still have one im sure alot of ppl would be buying it (including myself). I could not find it on thier site so who knows if its still around really
and since there isnt' (that i could find) its why im asking about getting a giant set of another brand.
I tried the reaper paint and it was alright but not as nice as gw, what i did like about it was the drop bottle that was easier then hell to mix instead of using the back of my paintbrush scrub style.
btw scott, we still have to meet up and you have to show me alot of things!!!
i'll have to look at the paints that i got from the den, maybe they were p3 and not reaper, but i have a funny feeling thier reaper.
im also just waking up, im still pretty messed up sleeping patterns, gotta start waking up earlier.
i might pick up a chaplain or a librarian from the den today, those seem to be my favorite models for SM's, just the idea of the chaplain is pretty sweet.
anyways im off topic
yea, i was looking at the warstore and they have a vallejo set with 72 colors or somethign like that. have to take another look
