WIN
Just in case anybody wasn't watching (Proving that you are fail . ) Canada just beat USA 3-2 in overtime for the Olympic Gold (Men's Hockey).
Just had to share that.
EDIT: that also takes us up to 14!!!! Gold medals.

Re: WIN
When did we are the champions stop being played after a huge win and who decided to have Gotta Feeling by the Black eyed Pea's as Canada's victory song. Ah my Hockey playing youth went up in flames when that song came on, and it doesn't help that crosby looks like a male model and he scored the last goal. Regardless, it was a good game, and I suppose Crosby will lose some teeth and grow a beard eventually.

Re: WIN
That game was superb, crosby sure made up for his breakway screw up. Hells yeah.
Oh, and we have the most gold medals for both a hosting country and for winter games. I'm not certain about any other records, but I know we have those two. woot

Re: WIN
why is everyone so concerned with just hockey? i realizeits canada, but we enter and win more events than nhl olympic hockey. how many people can name the other 13 gold medals we won without googling it? It really annoys me when hokey is the only sport anyone ever talks about.

There is no reason to be annoyed with people wanting to share their excitement about a very climactic finish to a very well played Olympic showing by the Canadian teams, if Canada had lost hockey this post would still be here, just re-phrased, bummer we lost hockey but look at all that gold. Personally I only went out of my way to watching the Hockey and Curling, while you clearly can share some of the other inspiring Canadian victories with this forum community so please do.

Re: WIN
Why do you have a problem with people liking hockey? If someone had posted a "YEAH We won bobsledding" or curling etc, would you have still posted the response you did?
There's a reason Men's hockey was the last event.. the grande finale.. b/c it's the event the most people cared about.
And just for the record, you're right - I DON'T know what the other 13 gold medals are (Well, I know curling and womens hockey), and I don't particularily care either. I'm proud of my country that they DID win 14 medals, but the only winter sports I actually care about were mens and womens hockey, which is why those were the only sports I payed any attention to. I don't see how there's anything wrong with that. I simply don't find anything overly entertaining about bobsled/skating/skiing.
I'll not be looked down upon simply for liking a sport that annoys you.

Apologies to Veyure if I snapped at you, I don't know why I got so defensive, I think I kinda took your little blurb as a personal attack.
Lets just say I like hockey.. a lot.. and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. If you do, then we're in disagreement, but in hopes of avoiding a flame war, lets leave it at that...

Re: WIN
it's not the sport that annoys me. it's the fact that it's the only one that anyone that ever talks about when talking about olympics. There just anything interesting to talk about when all olympic hockey is doing is shuffling the nhl teams to their country teams.
I'm not dissing anyone at all, just stating my frustration that i never hear anything talked about concerning winter olympics other than hockey. Sorry if i offended you jim.
If someone had mentioned we won gold in snowboarding(2 gold), speed skating(4 gold), Curling (1 gold), figure skating (1 gold), skeleton (1 gold), skiing (1 gold) or bobsled (1 gold) or even WOMEN'S hockey, then i would have been happy and more positive about olympics as a whole. there's more to winter sports than hockey.
And no i didnt know all the 13 other gold medals just a few, but would have been nice if someone would have mentioned them so maybe i woud have known. all people ever mention is "we have won X medals so far, but hockey is still playing."
And it's not just this comunity on the boards im ranting about, everywhere i go it's like that (downtown, school etc)

I really don't have much to add other than..
s'all good, just another miscommunication. Now that I've read your 'explanation', I can understand the frustration even if I don't agree with it. Since Mens&Womens hockey were the only things I really cared about, I obviously have no problem hearing about it over & over.

Re: WIN
Meh, I watched the Olympics pretty much at all time for the past two weeks. I loved watching all the events, especially the speed skating, biathalon and sliding events. That being said, Hockey is still the most watched and most popular of all the events at the Olympics.. its been that way for 50 years and wil probably never change, even if they dont allow NHL players to compete.. (and truthfully, I have no problem with it).
The hockey is so different at the Olympics, its almost a joy to watch over a regular game. Hardly any penalties (2 in the gold medal final) and no fights. Hey, dont get me wrong, Im as big a UFC/MMA fan as you can find out there, but I really dislike fighting in hockey.. I love the fast paced games they play in the Olympics.
I understand your reasonaing though Greg.. we watch hockey all winter long, and now we get to watch more, with all the same guys. Point definitely understood. think about all the guys who played SUnday in the gold medal game, and had to go play hockey tonight.. including the coach who had to zp back to coach a regualr seaosn game tonight.. which also meant coaching some guys who were on the US team.
You never remember the Olympic stories the pros made, but always the unknown and amateurs. Who's ever gonna forget Montgomery grabbing that pitcher of beer while walking his way throug whistler to the medal ceremony.. awesome stuff.
*sigh* And now Im back to regular old crappy TV... at least until the Ultimate FIghter comes back on.

'Cause Hockey is WAY better than those other lame ass sports. Bobsled sucks.
Hockey is a professional sport played by thousands and thousands of people. To excel at something popular enough to support several professional leagues across the planet is a point of pride. To be the best at an event that really means something is far more important to myself as a Canadian than having the best bobsled team. How many people world wide actually do that =I=censor=I=? Now compare it to hockey.
I didn't watch the olympics except for the hockey. I could give a =I=censor=I= about speed skating, skiing, or any of that other crap. Now hockey however, those were the most talented players on the planet and we prevailed. It was awesome, and I feel a great sense of pride about it.
Hockey is a big deal in Canada. Don't complain, embrace it! I don't make time to watch NHL at all for all sorts fo reasons (most of them are small kids running around) but the beauty of Olympic hockey is you can be an instant fan without having to watch an 80 game regular season and best of 7 eliminations round. It's a great game played by the best athletes in the biz. That's why people care.
Womens hockey is just brutal. They did a breakdown of registered hockey players by country. Canada had somethign like 100,000 players, the States was second with 30,000ish. Sweden had 211 players. I hardly get excited about another 18-0 win by a team playing against countries that barely know how to skate.
Just to recap, Boblsed is brutal. Hockey is Awesome.

Re: WIN
Hockey is awesome. I heard that the Olympic bosses were actually thinking about scrapping woman's hockey, as Canada is dominating too much. Unless other countries start competing with Canada, and not consistently get rolled by them, they may shut it down as an Olympic sport. Cuz Canadian women are too good.
Two things I dislike about hockey fans though, are those who equate nationalism with Hockey, and indulge in the "Hero worship" most major syndicated sports foment.
Are they national hero's for getting payed to play a sport? They are very good, and have devoted their lives to a game, but it doesn't make them as inspiring as a firefighter, or cop who does their job. i appreciate the skill and abilities of the hockey players, but they are not national hero's to me, any less than a really good Lawyer, or Doctor, or Dentist is. I think some people really buy in to the marketing hype of the sports star. More people watch Hockey, and grab their Flags, and chant about how Canada is better than all the rest, but only 25% of those people take the time to vote as part of our obligation as citizens to take active roles in deciding Canada's choices. /rant off.
To recap: Hockey Awesome, makes sense it is more popular than other sports, but people get way to intense about it. Much like Football, Soccer or Basketball.

Re: WIN
Side note (Paz's post reminded me): read an article recently that Alberta's considering making voting mandatory b/c of their crappy voter turnout in recent years. The article had a comment in it that I agree with a lot - The greatest voter turnouts historically have been when a populace decides to turf out a government that is dissapointing rather than support one that's allready doing a good job.
Essentially, The reason a lot of people don't vote is b/c they're OK with who's in power and expect that the status quo will remain unchanged without their input. Granted there are those people who're just lazy or who don't care, but I think the majority fall into the "I'm ok with this government, so I'm just gonna leave things as is."
I personally have no problem with low voter turnout, b/c it means those who ARE conscientious enough to vote have a greater say in things. I think the people who are smart/informed/dedicated enough to vote are the people who SHOULD be deciding things.
Plus there's the old saying "If you don't vote, you don't have the right to complain about your government." As long as the non-voters follow that code, it don't bother me.
And just FTR, I didn't vote last election b/c none of the options appealed to me.
