Space Marine the game.
I heard about this game awhile ago, but this is the first gameplay I've seen of it. I gotta say, I like the way it looks, gameplay needs more depth but I like the visuals alot, despite the less that amazing video quality.

If I'm not mistaken, that was an older beta sneak? There was a trailer last year for the game. check it out here:

I had seen that one a long time ago, but I never trust cinematic trailers to give a feel for the in game graphics, especially when related to a Warhammer video game. What a tragedy it was believe the Warhammer fantasy MMO would look better than WoW based off trailers, though Mark of chaos did look pretty good in game with a wicked trailer.

Re: Space Marine the game.
I think I've seen stuff like this... maybe four years ago? It was about the "good guys" in power armour shooting bolters and using chainsaw weapons against the "bad guys" in a dark Gothic setting. Oh, I think it was third person and had "cinematic effects" suspiciously close to what's observed here.
Maybe I'm just imagining things though.

Gears of War? HC, can you honestly tell me, with a straight face, you think a game with a SPACE MARINE would be like playing lamesauce marcus fenix? Truly?
Gears stole lots from everyone. It was a derivative, if not enjoyable (for a while) game. Thats like saying playing 40k is like playing starcraft. The original is not derivative because others have copied its style.

yes, because Marcus "gravel voice" fenix was a space marine. You run around with regenerating health shooting guns and bashing people's skulls in a gothic settingcan you honestly tell me, with a straight face, you think a game with a SPACE MARINE would be like playing lamesauce marcus fenix? Truly?
The only improvement this game could potentially have is not having a whiny teammate running around with you complaining about his wife.
This is quite a flawed statement. 40K is a tabletop game, Starcraft was a foray into a (modestly) new industry with a genre that was still in its infancy. All SC copied was a basic underlying theme and three races. I watched that video, and I saw a bastard child of Gears of War (theme, setting, weapons, characters, etc.) if it had knocked up assassin's creed (control scheme, camera angles, finishing moves, etc). This game isn't anything special. It's plain and "safe", nothing we haven't seen before.Thats like saying playing 40k is like playing starcraft.
The video game industry is becoming so hilariously stagnant that we have to release "cool" titles with different names every few years. I'm not saying GoW is immune to bashing, I'm just saying that blatant copying of another generic shooter is completely... annoying.
Oh, but it involves GW's universe, so it must immediately be awesome.
Blah, over the years I've watched the video game industry grow it's becoming more and more depressing as it becomes more and more of a money grab. Can we not have some games that are at least somewhat original? =/

Re: Space Marine the game.
Well i searched around a bit and got a feel for the game... I'll definately play it... I mean it's GoW with hopefully better writing staff, and I played both of those so this should be good. I agree and disagree with you holy cause, I do think it will be alot like GoW, however space marine has the added bonus that there's a good chance the protagonist will be silent, so it won't sound like we put players from the '92 dallas cowboys in power armor and gave them chainsaw weapons. So I mean that's an improvement on the genre right there. The GW universe is awesome, so that should make it awesome right there, however theres been a few 40k games in the past they've all been =I=censor=I=, I won't mention DoW because it got me into table top 40k it was so good. Chaos Gate? terrible, Fire Warrior? crappy, and there's others that I didn't play.
What I disagree with is that it will rip off GoW, because I mean really? how do you rip off a generic power armor game? Exspecially when you're GAMES WORKSHOP, THE PEDDLER OF POWER ARMOR! Seriously, these guys probably influenced every power armor game since 1990, even if it was pretty passively, I'm sure almost every dev team making a power armor game had some dude who played 40k.
But if you played Chaos Gate then this will basically just be a sequel to that, probably with stuff they learned from Fire Warrior thrown in, stuff like "Don't make a =I=censor=I= game" my main complaint is that the characters look like they were made with the DoW engine... used the DoW models and either scaled them up or more likely scaled the camera down. From what I see so far, the graphics are average for last year so hopefully they hire someone to fix that before release date, however I think we will get the same rehashed relic models, they looked really good from far away, up close they leave you with a feeling like someone half assed their homework.

Re: Space Marine the game.
Gears of War= muscular humans, regular height, using cover and such to kill lame vole-ppl.
Space Marine= 9 foot tall power armoured cc beast. Cover is for girls, he's wearing cover for F*** sakes!
saying that a space marine game would be derivitive of gears is silly. Because gears had space marine lite first, doesn't mean SM would copy it. Its the source material! It may look the same, but that is becuase gears looks like 40k. How exactly do you make power armour grim/dark without being grim/dark with power armour?
Games are derivative these days, its a natural consequence of loads of content, and a multi-billion dollar industry. There is a reason that CoD:MW2 sells so well, even though its just a military shooter. Deriding the industry for a lack of originality in the high production value level is a practise in insanity. Original ideas are easier to produce on a smaller budget, therefore if you want originality, looking the big games is a bad idea.
What I ment for starcraft is that the design is quite copied. I once read that SC was actually planned to be a 40k game, but gw backed out or argued infringement... I can't speak to the verasity of this, but it sounds about right.
Zerg= tyranids, check.
terrans= power armour? check.
protoss= eldar equivelents? check.
I look forward to this. In the video I posted, the Space marine with jump pack and thunderhammer slaying orks= sweetsauce.

Re: Space Marine the game.
I honestly don't see how, or more so why, they would make a game about an Imperial Space Marine, without power armor and chainsaw weapons. Maybe space marine ultimate poker where they sit on the battle barge during down time, or space marine pit brawl as a boxing game. I don't see anything wrong with them taking proven functional game mechanics.
People are meant to stand on the shoulders of those before them to reach new heights I believe. Granted it is nice when some one invents the ladder all on their own.

Re: Space Marine the game.
If its got a Space Marine, I'm game for trying it out.
I dont know if you purposely disagree with everyone just to stir up conflict, or if you really feel that way. Your telling me that as a 40K fan, you wont try Space Marine because it looks to much like Gears of War? I didn't play Gears of War, so even if Space marine is a rip-off of it, it got a new player for slapping on the Space marine title.

Re: Space Marine the game.
You completely miss the point. Why do we need two games that look, feel, and act very similar to each other? How about dreaming up something unique instead of re-releasing the same game just with different names (Space Marine, not COG soldier. Bolter/Chainsword not Lancer).How exactly do you make power armour grim/dark without being grim/dark with power armour?
This is special because it renames a bunch of stuff? Just play gears of war except mentally replace the names like I said above. Then again, most gamers just like to see flashy screens and drool at what's dragging them around the virtual world, judging by how hard most games these days are. lol
I can't "choose" to agree (or disagree) because I feel very strongly about video games and the industry. It's simply how I am. I'm just calling out the BS that the industry is trying to throw around at consumers, who usually say "YEP, COOL" and buy another mindless clone of a game that is (sometimes) functional as a game but (usually) boring as a narrative.System Commander wrote:

Imagine reading a book where only the very major nouns (character names, places, weapon names, etc) were switched around, but the overall tone, setting, plot... it's all the same. That would get pretty fscking boring pretty quick, right? Now imagine you have to keep paying $70 for that "experience". You'd be pretty tweaked off, wouldn't ya. Why do people let video games get away with this bullcrap?
I think they could be doing so much better but instead they re-make the same games over and over, usually very badly (doom 3, bioshock, fallout 3...)
For the record, I think Carmack is absolutely brilliant but I do disagree heavily with his assessment that video games need not any sort of "substance", that they are just for pressing buttons and receiving flashy feedback.
And hey, if we just spend our time agreeing with each other and saying how awesome something is, life gets pretty boring pretty quick
Feel free to argue this with me via PM, I don't want to clog this topic up with my rants any more

HolyCause....
As a fan of 40K which is essentially a re-hash of a whole bunch of themes from other Sci-Fi and religous works how can you condemn people for wanting the actual authentic telling of a 40K story through a video game environment with actual identifiable 40K elements, like a chainsword, bolter, space marine etc.?
By enjoying 40K don't I get to call you out for liking Power Armor, but not playing Starship Troopers? If you paint a tyranid model, do I get to say how silly you are for painting something that isn't a Giger original? When you play Civilization 4, can I ask why you aren't "Keeping it real" by playing the first Civilization?
There is nothing new under the sun. People were saying that in Biblical times so to try and complain about that now is a little pedantic.
On a 40K board It should be a given that console gamers are going to want to play a 40K game. Even if it WERE simply a mod'd version of another FPS people here are going to want to play it. 'Cause when you enjoy something it's cool to see it fleshed out in other mediums be it books, art, or a full sized outfit of power armor.
The Blood Bowl video game probably doesn't have the graphics, game play, or all inclusive play that NFL '10 does, but so long as it brings something that helps a person get immersed in the identifiable and well loved universe of that setting why does it make sense to rag on it? Space Marine is no different. It's NOT going to be Call of Duty Modern Warfare, but it's going to have something else which will be super cool, and that's a Friggin' SPACE MARINE laying out the imperial justice.
But then again, you didn't like Fallout 3. It's hard to put any weight behind your posts with that in mind.
I am going to buy a copy of Spac Marine now, just 'cause of your post. And I have zero intention of even playing it.

Re: Space Marine the game.
Hey Tom, it wasnt directed towards, I was addressing it to Alex.
I guess my point is.. someone posted a comment about Space Marine the video game. As a 40K site, of course the majority of people are going to be very excited about it... Your a Space mafrine laying the beatdown and fighting 40K baddies, thats awesome.. period. Its also awesome for 95% of the people on here, so try and keep that in mind. Alot of people I know played Oblivion and Fallout 3 and loved them both. Some people can play games that are similar, and some can't.. you obiously can't. Thats fine and all, but your post really has the talking down top the rest of us feeling to it. I can see some arguing/debate over a rule, but come on man.. this is a trailer for a video game thats far from release.. let us have something to talk about !
Just try to keep that in mind when people post up topics like this.. a little banter back and forth is fine.. I take my share of the grief for being an Arnie fan.. banter good, but dont go for jugular and kill the topic. Just take er easy a bit.
