Back into 40k from 7 year hiatus
My wife got me (Mark H) the Assault on Black Reach box for "The Kid" and I for Christmas (He turns 8 this February).
I dusted off my old Chaos and Tau armies (mostly painted) and am now furiously painting an Ork army while "The Kid" is learning painting and playing Space Marines (Ultramarines, his favorite colour is, luckily, blue).
5th edition rules take a bit of getting used to compared to 3rd edition, but I look forward to maybe playing a few friendly games at the Den or participating in a tournament with an Ork army.
I was planning on building 1500pts, is that still pretty standard for tournament play in Saskatoon?
I'm off to read up on the league that you guys are running.

To be honest, you would probably be better off being able to play up to a 2000 point army. Most of are games are now played in the 1700 to 2000 point range. For the current league there were many games over the 2000 point level as well, but I expect next league this may drop off.

I think it may be a couple of months before I have 2000 points collected and painted I might bring the kid down to watch a few games here and there and watch for a few smaller point tournies

I'd argue heavily that 2K is the standard now, as most armies scale quite well at that level (barring their codex sucking). 1 750 is sorta nice, but a lot of armies feel incomplete with that amount of points.

My Tau army is sitting at 1550, so I might try and grab the newer codex and a few figs to get it up to par and continue to work on a bigger Ork force

Ya.....toss in another Hammerhead and you should be able break 1750....assuming that you dont already have 3.

That's what I'm thinking. I have a *bit* of painting to do for what I have. One problem I have is that I used a lot of Elf Grey, which they don't make anymore :*(
I have a pretty broadside, but an additional Hammerhead would do good things for me, and maybe a squad of vespids or a predator, just 'cause they're new and cool
Here's what I haven't painted for my ~1500 Tau
1. Crisis Commander with Misslepod and Flamer
2. 4x Stealth suits (the old kind)
3. 10 (and two halves) fire warriors
4. 6 Pathfinders
5. 1 Devilfish
6. 1 Hammerhead
I've got painted
1. Ethereal
2. 3xCrisis Suits
3. 12xFire Warriors
4. 1xDevilfish
5. Broadside
6. 16 Kroot
7. 2 Krootox
8. 2 Kroothounds
9. Numerous random drones (2 shield ??? gundrones)
Basically the only timesink for my leftover painting is the two tanks. I could definatly add a third or one of those predator thingies, they look great but the rules for them look very "meh". I haven't grabbed the "new" codex yet though. Vespids' look cool AP3 for Blood Angel death

Re: Back into 40k from 7 year hiatus
I don't know the differences between the 3rd ed. Tau codex (I've never read it) and the 4th one, but I do know that now, Tau are pretty close to the top (if not the very top) of strong armies in 40K. Sadly Tau only get one real theme to play around with (fireknife spam), so depending on how some view it they're a bit lacking.
If you're gonna buy new Tau stuff, avoid Vespids at all costs. The rules for them are garbage =/ The models are OK though; along with the Kroot they offer a nice contrast to the Tau giving them a feeling of really being a multi-species empire.

I might grab a box of Fire Warriors and a Hammerhead after I figure out what I'm going to do for painting. (2 parts skull white, 1 part spacewolves grey?? I'll probably zip by the Den this weekend and raid the paint rack)
