AVATAR
GO SEE IT. I saw it last night, and most movies will be ruined for me now. Too good!

Re: AVATAR
Hmm. I've heard mixed views on this. On the one hand, it is very visually stunning and is very innovative in that field - Daily Planet covered that sometime last week and I was impressed. But it seems that it was "the storyline was completely formulaic with absolutely terrible dialogue".
Elaboration from those who have seen it???

Just saw it. The story itself has been done.. Dances with wolves (Or in this place, giant blue cat-men) in space, anybody? But it's visually awesome, has some good moments, and the big battle is.. well, Epic. and then some.
Also.. unobtainium.

Re: AVATAR
Entertaining visually, but the story was cut and paste, and the political undertones were annoying.
Given the chance again, I'd probably decide against paying movie theater prices to see it.

Re: AVATAR
or.. Dance with Wolves, or Last Samurai, or Return of the Jedi, or even Phantom Menace.. the list goes and on and on. The biggest complaint about the movie is the fact is the same story recycled .. an indigenous people attacked by a tenchnologically superiors force and they have to fight them with their primitive weapons.
There have been alot of discussion about what Cameron could of done to make a truly unique movie by taking a few chances with the script, but instead he took the safe route.. still though, the dude knows how to make money.
Now that he has this out of his system, he can focus on True Lies 2.

I agree. My only yhtought on this is that the 3D really helped make it so visually appealing. I have some suspiscions that if you saw it at home w/o the fancy glasses, then the experience may be dulled. And if there be no flashy lights, then the crapy recycled story may show through even more.

Cameron is being sued for the script. When I saw the add I thought it was cool they were making a movie based on the book I had read (I think it's a short story). I can't remember the title as it was part of an anthilogy but it's the exact some premise. Complete with the wounded soldier getting the Avatar and everything. Also I only heard recently that Cameron settled out of court for ripping off the script to Terminator. I've lost some respect for the dude.

Re: AVATAR
I hadn't heard abotu that, but Im not surprised at all.. Im sure Cameron can't write his way out of a wet paper bag (Im actually not even sure what he written o the stuff he directed, I should go look that up right now), but he can sure direct the crap out of stuff. He should just let someone else take careof the writing thing, find decent scripts for him, make sure they arent stolen, and just stay behind the camera.. darn these people and their aspirations..
.. and why isn't their more aspiration for True Lies 2, Commando 2, Conan 3.. I mean, I know Arnold's in his 60's now.. but we're running out of quality filming time.. another 10 years and the window might close up on the topless, greased up scenes !

Re: AVATAR
Hmm, looks likes hes written more or less everything he directs, give or take a screenplay adapatation or coming up with the story.
However, he did not come up with the story nor did he write the screenplay or anything involved with Pirahna 2: The Spawning... how dissapointing..

Re: AVATAR
I believe the short story he ripped off was Disney's Pocahontas, I mean seriously, technology abundant conquering Brit- i mean humans, come and kick some indigenous peoples ass in order to take their land, but one of the conquerors falls in love and ruins all the spoils for the empire and then they fight back with bows and arrows and eventually drive back the far superior British empire.... human chamber of commerce....
That being said, I loved it, I'm a sucker for Pocahontas, I mean "SMITH ARE YOU CRAZY?!!" Gets me every time.

Re: AVATAR
Something interesting to read is his original script he wrote, its floating around somewheres. In it, the humans wanted to make the na'vee workers, cuz it cost so much to bring humans to pandora. As with all good stories, the guys footing the bill dumbed it down... Still awsomes though.

Re: AVATAR
This is the only article I have found on the lawsuit. I think that's pretty wierd for something as major as a blockbuster movie getting sued for plaigarism. Then again he also settled out of court for the Terminator script which I hadn't even heard about until recently.

I haven't seen Avatar yet, but as I said before when I heard the gist of Avatar I just assumed it was the film version of the mentioned Poul Anderson story.
