Hi, thanks for all the advice. I've read though the "The Painting Corps" website. I like the green of the mariens but is a bit strong for what I was going for. Still really nice and bright. Thanks for the advice. I'm working on weathering and adding a mud and dirt look to the dread. I think its working ok and will post more pictures tomorrow. I know that I could be using better paint but I have seen really impressive results with this type of paint (Jay swears by these) and I'm not looking to win any contests, just have a bit above table top quality paint job for these guys. No doubt I'll get better as I work though all the units I need to paint. I just picked up another battle box so that is 4 full squads of troops to paint plus termies and scouts plus the odd character. (also 2 rhinos) so I have my work cut out for me. I'll stop by hobby world for the transfer stuff. I try to support the local stores as much as possible and reasonable. I'll look into the MIG stuff. I'm not sure I want to go quite that far but will look at it. I'm going to try out the battle damage tomorrow. I know I have foam around here somewhere to work with. Thanks again. Let me know what you think when I get the next photos posted.

I like to support local too, but Hobby World is the worst. I could fill a LONG set of weeks relaying the horrible experiences I have dealing with those people. Still... I find myself there every once in a while buying stuff I wish i could get anywhere else. I'd rather give money to Bin Laden and the boys then Hobby World.

Good luck! I know Forge World also came out with a set of pigments that looked like it had a good variety for much less than buying the equivalent amount of MiG stuff. I imagine there must be a lot less in them, or something. But besides that, if you want some of that Tamiya stuff LMK. I'll trade it for old figs, empty beer bottles, old Fleetwood Mac 8-tracks, anything.

Hey Scott, come on now, don't rip people off. Old beer bottles and 8-tracks are worth something!

I like the green you've chosen. I think it works pretty well for marines. For battle damage I've had some pretty reasonable results with paint on damage. Where you paint a darker colour on in damaged areas or edges (grey or brown) and highligh the bottom with a lighter shade of what you use. Then highlight the top with your highlight of main colour. It's very simple, but might not be what you're looking for. If I have some time later hopefully I can get a pic up of what I'm talking about, but it does look similar to Cam's white test model he linked you. The book Scott lent me, Imperial armour master class, has some amazing stuff done with MIG pigments (and it's autographed!!).

Hi thanks for all the answers. I'll look into the powder. I got some turps and oil paint to try out in the future. Looks like fun to try. I've also tried soft pencil to add a little scratch marks to the armour and I made my first attempt of battle damage to the dread. I used a dark green and then highlighted the bottom edge with my highlight colour. I've found that the damage has to be really small for this technique to work. to large and the effect is lost. What do others think?

Over that I put a wash of the main colour to tone it down a little. I also tried a patina for old bronze to make the bronze look like its been around a really wet world for quite a while and has started to corrode.I also use the soot pigment to add hazzy tones to the back of the dread. Let me know your thoughts. I've also started work on the commander. I'm not sure about the cloak but I wanted something rich to off set the slightly drab power armour. Feed back is always appreciated.I've never had good luck picking colour schemes so feedback is appreciated.

I think the battle damage turned out pretty good. I know it is a large patch, but from the angle i really liked that there was allot of paint missing around the close combat weapon, just up on the rim.

The damage looks good! Have you thought about using a color like white or bone/white to underline the damage instead of the highlight color? the effect might not get as lost as you mention maybe?

Hi, I'll give that a try. I'm also thinking of using a dark brown for the damage area. I'll post some results. I'm also going to try the http://www.awesomepaintjob.com ink formula. It might help with the lining and the colour choice for inks (plus cost). I also bought some brush pens today that come is some really strong colours. Thought they might work for highlighting. The name on them is Faber Castell PITT artist pen. I also got the 005 micro black pen that I hear is a must for lettering and purity seals. I'll post the results soon. Thanks for the feed back. All suggestions are helpful at this point.

Hi, ok, I first want the thank Paz for showing some the techniques I've started using and Al for his suggestion of the brown wash tone. Thanks guys. Here is the latest of what I've been up to. I got the colour scheme down a bit better for the marines. It took a while to do but the experimentation worked out. I've also posted the obligatory workshop images and I built a case to transport my paints around in. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Wow, that was very well done. I have not watched allot of hobby video's, probably because the first one i ever saw was a blue table one, and it was horrible. You had fantastic picture quality, your narration was clear and concise, and it was enjoyable hearing you talk about what you had done. Really like the way the actual rhino turned out as well. The only question that kept going through my mind was, how are you going to paint the inside of it??

Yah, nice work James. I've always dreamed about being able to open all my rhino's doors but never did anything about it. As with Cam, I kept thinking the same thing however.

Yea, its going to be a problem. Next one gets the inside painted first. Live a learn. I was pushing a bit to get to assemble the whole thing. It was kind of an experiment to see if the hinges would work. Thanks for the feed back. When I do more I'll post something else up.

OK, been a while. I've not done much more on my space marines but I have been working on some more buildings. I know this isn't a good place to put this post but I've added a few more videos:
