Base sizes

I've run short of bases for my models and have been looking for more but have been finding multiple answers for which size is right/newest.

What is the consensus of the players here?

normally its 28mm bases for infantry, 40mm for terminators and some bigger troops and then the 60mm for dreadnoughts. they recently started boxing marines with 32mm bases but if you don't care just use 28mm. there are some models with funky bases such as centurions or tyranid warriors on 50mm.
actually i suppose thats just rambling... short version is if you know the model and want to know the size go to the GW webstore and read the description on the model to see what size is normal. using a size bigger or smaller is ok depending on the situation too (anyone else remember demon princes on 40mm bases?)
if your models need slotted bases and have actual feet on them you could consider cutting off the slot and just gluing them by the feet instead.

the GW answer of course is "whatever base the model comes with" this is of course, self serving on their part because a model and its base are sold together and most people looking for base sizes are trying to use off brand models.

unfortunatly the tournament answer is "whatever base the model comes with" because to give a level playing field and not allow modeling to advantage, we have to have consistency.

for everything else... whatever your model fits on nicely, and bigger is generally more acceptable than smaller.

28mm- human sized (guard, skitarii, eldar etc)
32mm-transhuman (marines, gene stealers etc)
40mm- big bois (terminators, ruststalkers, Tyranid warriors)
50mm- centurions, anything that massive
60mm- walkers, skimmers
80mm- deredeo dreads, super massive walkers
100mm- onager dunecrawlers (tho honestly with big walkers like this and the soulgrinder, I wouldn't even base em, easier to move over buildings and move around the table)
120mm ovals- flyers, Tyranid monstrous creatures etc

That's the average. Easy rule of thumb: it should be same size or 1 size bigger than the base it came with, otherwise you might get called out for bad sportsmanship (trying to balance a Tyranid warrior on 28mm or slapping a marine on a 60mm base to get buffs).

Follow up question though, do ork Nobz qualify as large infantry? I based them the same as my shoota and slugga boyz

Regular nobz can be on 28 or 32 mm. Mega-nobz go on 40mm.

Just measured the bases. Everything is on 25's. Might have to rebase the nobz, but thinking of just continuing to base my ork boyz on 25's.

My nobz are on 25s, I would put them on 32s if I redid them.

I recall that there are sites that sell "upgrade disks" for bases, where you can just plug in your old 25's and be good to go as 32's, so that you don't have to completely rebase/maybe break legs.

I actually took a look at those upgrade rings, but I was a tad confused as to how they could be used on bases with models already on them.

As I've seen, bases have inclined edges. Does that mean these upgrade rings need to fit on from the top? Because that would pose an issue with already used bases.

Maybe with imperial guard, space marines, and the slender eldar that would work, but orks are bulky and bristling with poles, weaponry, spikes, and big green limbs. Might be difficult to slide a ring over them.

The rings come as two arches, you clip them together around the sides, no vertical motion required.

Ah... eBay is possibly selling some different ones then.

They dont sell bike base conversions do they?

Im trying to figure out an easy to rebase all my flesh hounds. They are all on the rectangle cavalry bases.. and i think theyrr supposed to be on the bigger round bases now . I'd consider using the oval.bike ones if they had conversions but Im guessing they dont though. Seems like such a hassle ripping the figures off the bases.

The den has like a million bases, all sizes.

sorry robin, i picked up two boxes of chaos hounds on Saturday and cleaned Darren out of the bike bases. might have to ask him to restock.

easiest conversion for a cavalry base into a biker base is to cut a 25mm base in half and glue them onto the ends of the cavalry base.  it gets you to the same size base if your careful and make clean cuts.

The new flesh hounds come with a big round base.. which is what id really prefer to use. Ive lined up the hounds sideways a few times when facing alot of str8+templates, so it would really benefit me to redo them...   ..  but, that seems like a lot of work  

Im pretty sure hounds come packed on a 50mm base, which is huge.

oh, if thats what they are, then the den carries packs of 50mm bases in sets of 3.  $6 a set.
