Nice scheme, love the blue.

Necron player pro-tip. You know what's better than one annihilation barge? More than one Annihilation Barge.

thanks mark. yea, im planning on getting a set of them.  im actually thinking of a list with a bunch of troops, a set of barges, and a bunch of destroyers.  destroyers just seem like they'd be good in 6th; 36" threat range with an AP 3 weapon.

I think the parts with just metal on them need something. With the blue, black, and gold the pieces with metal look ..... unfinished? I dunno.

The rest of the scheme is cool though.

Well the problem is that it is both metallic and bright. Which naturally pulls the eye to it. Then when you look to the rest of the model it seems to not fit as much. Maybe a wash to make it a bit duller so it doesn't *pop* as much?

edit: although this could just be me so I'd get more opinions first!  Smile

i took another shot without any flash. still makes the silver look brighter than it really is though.  overall, i want the shiny metal look to show this dynasty survived the long slumber better than their fellows.  but that back arch is still bugging me.

When I am dealing with metal colors I like to throw a layer of Sepia (or whatever the GW new Sepia wash is) wash and then a nuln oil wash right over that before the Sepia can dry. I find it darkens up the metal nicely as well as give it that time-worn appearance.

the flash washed out the photos, but you still get the idea of what's blue and whats gun metal in the following.  here's my scheme for deathmarks, lychguard, and warriors:

I agree, a wash + highlights would really make them pop.

I wash and highlight my red too. Looks nice and shiny, but not too monochromatic, and it's super easy to do.

The trick about metals is that metals neeeeed shadows, or you get this toy-chrome effect. You don't have to go all NNM on that mother, but like the guys said, a dark wash followed by highlights is simple and effective way to get your metals looking realistic.
For your color scheme, I would mix nuln (black) wash with a blue wash. Your base shadows shouldn't be warm, but cold, since that's the effect you seem to be going for.

eventually; i'm doing a different style of batch assembly line painting than usual.  starting with purely the base colors and going across the whole army with each one so i'm not cleaning brushes and swapping paints as often.  also means they look nicer as i playtest them to decide what units i like most.

when i get to the point of washing, how would you suggest i do the mix of black and blue washes paz?  like, actually mix them and then put them on? or a black then a blue layer, or a blue then black layer?

Depends how dark you want your shadows to be. I would personally just mix em, for a single layer.

With the advent of gw washes (ppl have been mixing their own for quite a while, it's pretty easy to make em) some people can go overboard with washes, just slapping em on. Id stick to a single layer, maybe even a second, of pure blue wash watered down a bit.
Make sure to go back after and bring out edges as well, if you want to do simple edge highlighting, or just along areas of light, if you want something a bit more realistic.

i dont have this metal in a paint pot yet so i cant highlight, but here's a test warrior with nightshade washed onto it.  i daubed the tip of a detail brush with it and focused on all the cracks, then i did a thin coat across the bare metal areas.

first new necron model 1484086_10152204957296224_708848400_nfirst new necron model 1606946_10152204957301224_943189270_n

the blue wash was a nice tip; that's exactly what i was going for.

I love washes. Simple yet Satisfying.
I like how you have an unwashed one beside the washed one just to make the comparison, really shows the difference.
They look nice.

Much much better with the wash.

Even if you don't have exactly the same color in a pot, you just need a slightly brighter variation of that color to highlight with. Metallics are pretty easy that way.

old GW chainmail works good for highlights over Boltgun metal. its lighter so it tends to bring out the details. not sure what they call it now, my pot is like 10 years old.
