Red Scorpions; WIPs and Finished's

One of my WD (I think from when the Realm of Battle board came out) has a step by step for doing the colors. The stone was 3 colors with progressive dry/over brushing and looked good. I'll see if I can find the recipe.

Alternately, if you could "age" the look of the base and dull the saturation, I think that could work.

Your base doesn't cause "gaze gravity" any more while still looking decent. Congratz.

Nice, lets the model take center stage, but you've got that bit of yella to tie it together.

My personal taste would call for a couple glazes of devlan mud on the yellow but it's much better.

the yellow i did with the new line; its a basecoat of averland sunset, which replaced the old iyanden yellow foundation.
then i gave it a heavy wash of agrax earthshade; the new devlin mud. the new washes so a better job than the old line btw.
then i followed it up with casandora yellow, but did this in a thinner coat cause it's really an 'omg, yellow' tint. you could basecoat white and heavy wash with casandra yellow and have instant imperial fists.

next time, i think i'll overbrush with zandri dust before applying the washes to dull it down more and use half of the casandra yellow that i did on this base.

I'd still knock it fown further so it's more seperated from the colour on the mini.

here's the sevrin model im painting so far. think i photoshoped the light levels a little too much though, as the highlighting on the blue seems to have disappeared now :/

Doesn't look to bad for a working progress.

in the end i wasnt too happy with the highlights on the blue armor, so i did a second highlight with hoeth blue, and then a dusting of skink blue. here's how he looks now:

did up the helmets for my 4 honor guard real quick. the red crested one's the chapter champion's head.

Nice freehand of the scorpions. Tough to do tiny stuff like that. My criticism would be that I don't see enough definition or transition from anything on the white. It would look so much better with some kind of work in the recesses.

agreed. the white just doesnt look finished to me either. i might hmm and hahh over how i want to go about adding some depth to it. im happy with how the eyes turned out though, i got a nice outline of black around the lenses. and the scorpions on the helms are my fav part too.

i'll probably have the white fixed in a few days; im swapping between painting 2 different armies atm so i dont get sick of painting one color scheme.

That aside those contemptor dreads are amazing with the dual assault cannon setup.
