It all really depends on what you are interested in. Horus heresy is a probably one of the more popular books. If you are into space marine stories, there are many books on the different chapters. There are also books on ordo xenos and ordo malleus inquisitor forces. If you like imperial guard then gaunt's ghosts is a popular choice.

If you check out the black library website they have a good esearch tool that helps narrow down the topic and subjects of each of the books.

The first book I read about 40k was simon spurrier's Lord of the Night. It covers pre heresy, chaos, traitors, cults, the imperium and xenos. Plus its really well written! Smile

Yeah figured somebody might use that. I was thinking a more comprehensive tome, that basically summarizes and combines the gist of all the books that have been put out for 40K. Difficult I know, but if somebody could do it for the Star Wars universe (going from pre-Old Republic days to post-whatever-that-funky-alien-race-is-called's invasion) then I'd imagine somebody should be able to do it for 40K as well.

I just finished Lord of the Night and it was pretty damn good. They just re-released a bunch of older titles that were really well done.. I also picked up Daemon World since I heard good things about it, but I have read Mechanicum first though, which is supposed to be one of the best books in the Horus Heresy series so far.

The Gaunt's Ghosts books are of course awesome (up to 9-10 now I think maybe 12??).. and so are the Eisenhorn/Ravenor books (6 total). Both All of these are done by Dan Abnett.. Ghosts are Imperial Guard and Eisenhorn/Ravenor are both inqusitors... and read out just like an galaxy spanning mystery novel. The Horus Heresy series is beyond awesome, if you like 40K or not.

I think every 40k fan should read the Ghosts books though, plus you can buy the first three novels in a handy dandy one book compilation.

I think i've got 90% of the books for the last 5 years. But with reprints and what not i get lost in what i got.

My favorites by far and away are Caphias Cane books. I can't stand Tannith first last and UGLY and i don't know why, i read the first book and just hated it.

Storm of Iron: Awesome book for chaos lovers

Star of Damocles / Rogue Star: Cool rogue trader series on the Damocles Gulf War.

Ragnor: If your a Space Wolf Fan.

Brothers of the Snake: Probably my favorite Space Marine book. Awesome chapter. If this book came out when i started collecting my Space Marines i would have painted them that way.

Horus Hersey is an awesome series period! Tells alot of good stories. I'm kinda disapointed about it. It's not that they are bad stories, far from it, they just don't cover what i wanna hear. It gives you some interesting insight and tidbits that i won't ruin in the reading of the books.

gaunts ghosts are sooo good i love dan abbet Very Happy. i also like the grey night series the coolest part is when they are storming a castle, and they are shootng arrows at grey knight terminators lol!. i also liked daemon world because it was unique with daemon versus daemon action, please no one hate me for this but i only thought the hh seris was ok, although i only just finished fulgrim, the main reason i dislike it is because i know that abbadon wiill not be killed, when he was fighting loken, i knew who the winner was, lucius will never die typhus kharn bile etc etc..
they are great books but i can retty much predict the story line the action is AMAZING though. just stating my opinion.
