Working on a few ideas for a couple of tourneys I'd like to run over the next three months.
Team tourney which would be similar to those I've run in the past, and a comped standardish tourney.
Are there any days/time periods from now to the end of September that are especially bad?
Canada Day falls on a Wendesday, past that August Civic holiday and ramp up for school/Labor day?

I'll be gone July 1-12 but other than that I should be good I think. I'd be all over a team tournament. Gotta defend that title.

Well no one has posted on here in a little bit but im gunna do it anyways. I was talking with a few fellows at the Den and they mentioned they couldn't remember playing a 40k doubles tournament here in stoon just always the teams. Has this ever been done? Or has it always been the teams of 4 with rotating players? Would a doubles tournament be easier to organize/score?

I dont know, again just had a brainstorming session at the Den in regards to 40k and the tournaments/community we have here. (apparently the community is HUGE in stoon, just not on these forums where the majority of the game planning and organizing goes on Shocked )

This is likely getting off topic but i think the best way to start to bring this community together (by that i mean people outside the 15 ish or so of us that consistently use these forums) is to have a set night for 40k at the Den. And i know thats how it used to be, and i know theres a bunch of reasons that it hasn't been for awhile. But still even if we had 4 guys who would consistently go, every whatever day we decide works best, and others can come when they can make it (i understand having a family and such often times end up with conflicting schedules with a scheduled game night) but there should be a few of us who could start this. And if it did become a for sure thing maybe for some with busier schedules it would be easier to know there's 40k on a specific night between this time and this time and be able to work it out with the wives, children and other dependents to consistently have that night to go play 40k with the 40k people.

I will honestly say the one thing i have missed the most since i moved to SK is not having a set night for 40k where people show up with their armies, and find someone else to play who just shows up. No pre planning, no posting on forums no waiting for replies just knowing that by going and showing up they'll have someone to play. (not that im against people planning outside that or anything, but it would be nice if there wasn't a necessity to have to use these forums every single time you wanted to play a game of 40k)

And as a result we could advertise at the Den that there is a 40k night, and im sure that we would quickly gain alot of new players, or atleast alot of people who play currently but only play within their established group of friends instead of using these forums because they don't know about them or they dont want to use them.

So in conclusion, i am volunteering to be one of the consistent people who goes every 40k night to play (im thinking thursday is best but if someone has another suggestion throw it at me.) From 6/6:30pm-9pm if anyone else is able/willing to join me and start a consistent game night leave a message here or private message me or whatever but this is something i would love to see happen and would benefit every aspect of the gaming community we have here. I'll post it up in the thunderdrome as a reminder but im planning to start doing this this week or next.

I would also like to hear what everyone thinks of this, if its doable or if im just crazy (which i may be crazy anyways) and reasons why or why not it could or couldnt work.

I'd be down with a set night for 40k. I do see a lot of ppl I've never really met playing at the den, so that might really be the best way to get a bigger community again.

I also would like to see a set night for 40k (Thursdays are best usually for me), where arranging a game on these forums is not nessessary. I love you guys, but since it seems to be such a low active player base on these forums, arranging games are hit and miss. Plus as Brian mentioned, if we make a set day, and can get "regulars" to that day, we can advertise about it easier and perhaps grow our forum base with the potential new blood we would bring in to it.

In regards to tournaments, I would love to see a doubles tournament. It's easier to assemble a team when you are only looking for 1 other to partner with.

I would suggest, though, that if we have a regular set day for games, without any advanced arrangements, me might want to settle on a typical point value to play at. That way, you could just whip up an X point list, take it down to the Den, and be reasonably certain that someone else brought a list of the same size.

I agree wholeheartedly. The only way to develop a strong player base is exactly that.. a regular game night.

It hasnt happened for a long time.. but truthfully the only reason we developed the thunderdome was because on 40k night, 20 guys would be showing up.l to play games and we could only reserve the 4 tables at the back. We could usually squeeze another two out amongst the other activities.. but a lot of people would show up and be short. We had to start booking tables and making sure it was fair.

I used to be able to.make that commitment to one evening a week, but I cant do that these days.. the 6 or so you need to be there is to early for me during the week. However.. i can commit show up 730 -8, visit.. then grab a beer afterwards.

Game nights and tournaments have always been the driving force for interest. The league is good for at least getting some regular play in.. but it doesnt drive you to paint, model or pick up new armies. All 3 going at once is what made the 40k community so strong.

Im down for the events though, any dates. I know i need to play more games.

I love the idea of a regular night. Thursday works good for me, and i should be able to make it almost every week. If we can get it going it would make my year.

Well as far as having an established points value before hand thats cool. The way im used to it is people show up with a list and be ready to play. If you make an 1850 list and show up, its pertty easy to trim that down as needed to match other peoples lists. (or add to) So yes, you should be bringing a list for games night however if you need to modify it to make points work people are usually cool with that too. Plus if new players start hopping in who knows how many points they have, so we'll play it by ear but i think 1850 or 1750 should be standard. (for some reason 1850 seems like the best number but im not sure why.) Game can start anywheres from 6-6 30 and be done by 9 so the den can close.

When it comes to space, we can worry about it if we run into that problem. (im sure we will as time goes on so check out Matt's post under General Discussion for dungeons and flagons and give your 2 cents on that topic since it is something we need to address if the Den isnt going to have enough space).

As far as showing up later than 6/6 30 thats no problem either. The idea of games night is to get together regardless of games or not. So beer afterwards is awesome even if you cant make it for games. On top of that if there's an odd man out you could even start a smaller pts game that you can bang out in an hour or so, that used to happen at my old gaming place all the time so i dont see it being an issue.

Alright! well im super stoked to see there is genuine interest in a regular games night for 40k. Im thinking we will be starting this not this thursday but the next one coming up (July 16th). It might be slower because its summer but thats ok we will go with the flow. I will swing by the Den and see if i can get Darren's permission to start this as well as put up some posters at the Den. (im doubtful he will have any problems with that).

Dungeons and flagons is still gonna be a pub first and foremost.. with the ability for a game friendly environment. So board/card/role playing games.. i dont think theyd be supporting large 6x4 warhammer games. Food and boose first.. games second. I could see x wing, small scale mini.games but 40k needs some big areas.

The den has had the option to expand in the past.. but getting more space for tables isnt a priority.. theres lots of time the backroom is empty. Theyd pretty much have to move locations.. and that wont happen soon. They have an extremely cheap lease/sq. Foot rate. I only mention this since it will be better to plan with whats available now.. then to base it on possibilities.

The den would let us reserve a night for games.. if we get regular play, support, events AND the 40k sales are there. Have to remember they are running a business and need to support the games supporting them.

Just food for thought.

Haha, a bit of a catch 22, since in order to drive the sales i feel like a gaming group is really necessary. I know i would be alot more motivated to pick up some new minis and paint the ones i have if i knew they were going to see regular use. But i agree, use what we got first and foremost.
