Although really its just pointing out what most people already know. He does go much further into depth with his analysis, but did anyone really think 6th was an assault edition?

this is why i wonder why melee got hit so hard.
ranged got rapid fire at max range while moving, snap shot and overwatch vs melee getting no init with furious charge, no charging from transports (unless assault) and disorganized charge penalties.
and this is called, "balance"

To be fair melee had 2 solid editions (third and fourth) that allowed for all kinds of stupid melee builds to just sweep from combat to combat. I didn't play fifth but there were games of third and fourth that didn't have shooting after turn one. (oh overcharged BA rhinos, so much cheese). Honestly in a sci-fi wargame I expect shooting to be a bit easier to do than melee. And melee isn't dead in 6th. It is just more of a tactical choice than "pile in those rhinos and run at them!!!".

funny that melee even exists in 40k. really makes zero sense that you would take the time to draw a sword or swing a hammer when your enemy has a plasma pistol aimed at your face. only sane guy in all of the grimdark is Cypher.

Certain melee friendly units got Hammer of Wrath attacks, and hit-and-run was improved (only one dude needs it to use it).

If you look at the back half of Kirby's discussion, he still talks about the viability of close combat, and viable it is.
