Paz, I did three layers on my cloak and it still sux.

What'd I do wrong :-P

1) Base
2) White
3) Blue Wash
4) White + Highlight

What was your Base color?

I almost always use something else for a base of robes, usually bone, but I've seen a lot of tutorials use a way dark brown and layer the crap out of it.

(Granted the loincloth thingy looks fine to me, but that's me:))

You're going for a blue-tinted cloth effect to tie it in with the skin?

I usually start with an off white myself.. Build it up slowly then use pure white as my final highlight only.. Ive started with both a grey and a flesh/brown and definitly prefer the flesh/brown route. You could also use a light blue to build up fron and use washes to help blend if it starts to look wonky.

Starting with bright white.. even using washes for the recesses might makenit look rough.. White.is so tough to use.. All about tricks

since your going for white fabric with a blue tint, i'd do something like this...


basecoat with a grey-blue color. some good choices in the new line are Incubi Darkness, The Fang, Thunderhawk Blue. i'd probably suggest The Fang out of the three for Tzeentch stuff. the first has a slight teal look to it, the last has a bit more grey to it.

next, paint on a pale grey on the raised and flat areas. use Dawnstone for this step.

do the same thing again with Administratum Grey, but let some of the Dawnstone peak out near all the edges that meet the blue you let peak out.

now, paint on your white. dilute it to 3:2 paint:water (preferably, use Reaper Flow Improver, not water; this'll make the paint smoother and easier to paint on, and not thin out the pigment in the paint). half:half will risk it being too runny and all the layering your just did will be ruined.

afterwards, if you feel you need a little more blue tint, dilute some Gulliman Blue glaze, not the wash, and put that on sparingly, letting it dry each time before you do another coat, as it darkens alot when it dries. the glaze tends to stay where you brush it, rather than pool, so its better for tinting something blue since it'll stay over the white areas and not just make the folds bluer.


i'd do something like that first, see how it looks.

also, if you like, the new how to paint citadel book has a DVD in the back of it, and it shows how to paint fabrics in it as well. the book shows what colors, and pics of each step, and then in the dvd you see them actually paint it and catch what he's doing with the brush to get that effect.
