We may need to re-re-re-re-read pages 118-122

To play a game of 40k, you:

1) Roll the mission
2) Roll the deployment type
3) Roll off to select table half
4) Deploy Fortifications
5) Put Terrain on the board O_O
4) Deploy Objectives (after you already know which table half you're on!)
5) Determine Warlord Traits
6) Check for Night fight
7) Roll off to see who deploy's first (and goes first)
Cool Before you deploy, generate psychic powers
9) After both sides have deployed, scout moves
10) Roll to seize

====

Narrative Terrain (pre-setup terrain chart)

1) Roll the mission

3) Roll off to select table half
4) Deploy Fortifications

4) Deploy Objectives (after you already know which table half you're on!)
5) Determine Warlord Traits
6) Check for Night fight

9) After both sides have deployed, scout moves
10) Roll to seize

Unless instructed other-wise in the mission, starting with the
player who chose their table half first, take it in turns to set up
objectives...

Another thing to note is when you declare your reserves etc.

The way I read it is that you inform your opponent what will be held in reserves before you deploy. So, if you deploy 2nd you can counter your opponents deployment even further by adjusting what you thought you might hold in reserve/deepstrike/outflank

That is kinda silly that you place objectives after determining where deployment will be. It wouldn't have mattered much in this tournament (only for mission 3 since the other two didn't place objectives), but it could be a huge deal in the future.

This is a bit tricky though.. Because they are assuming you are putting terrain out after choosing deployment.

If.the boards been set up.. You should really do objectives first.. Then roll for sides.

Fortifications mess everything up. Becuase your supposed to place them first.. It only really works if you deploy your fortifications in the same step as when yiur deploying your.army.

Me and Tim found this out last week. I set up terrain.. So following book we rolled for sides so he could depkoy his aegis line. We did warlord, etc. But now when it came time for objectives.. We knew where everything was. So he put three behind his lines.. I put three behind mine. He got a 1, 1, and 2.. (scouring) and i got a 3, 3 &4. What a pain.

We might have to develop guidelines for pre placed terrain games. If your using the terrain set up rules for yiur games.. Np. But sometimes time just doesnt allow or in a tourney setting you need to prep ahead. In those cases i really think you have to deplot forts with your army OR put forts out first.. Then deploy armies. At least then your opponent knows wheres that fortification is and can depkoy accordingly.

Thoughts?

I think we'd need special tournament scenarios that are more friendly to the "Narrative Terrain Deployment" style.

Terrain, Roll Mission, Roll Deployment *style*, Place Objectives (if applicable), Roll for deployment Sides, Deploy fortifications, Rolloff to deploy 1st. ???

Scarabs rip hive worlds to pieces, why should your flimsy bunker be any different than the base of a spire? I find it hillarious that when I assaulted a Fortress of Redemption everyone inside died from the hits inflicted before we even got to the "and the whole thing collapses in on itself" step.

I've only been caught off guard by scarabs once. That was my first game against necrons after the codex dropped.
Now they just get eaten up by str7 fire on turn 1.

Same here, lost a Land Raider to them not realizing how fast they were or vulnerable vehicles are in assault in 6th.

I haven't even busted them out in 6th, they were brutal enough in 5th hitting on 6's.

If you can catch an opponent off guard with them. Or use them as screening/tarpits I can see them being quite good in 6th. Its just to bad they can't claim linebreaker/deny objectives.

Well, they *can* deny objectives, you just have to be clever with your charge angel. If the squad holding the objective is *just* in range of holding, a charge can pull them off. If it's Big Guns Never Tire, they just eat the Land Raider.

Interesting idea. I hadn't thought to attempt a combat to pull models forward off objectives.

So ya... roll to pick edge is separate from the roll to deploy/go first.
Objectives are placed *AFTER* you know where everyone's deploying??? o_O

Sigh. Need a freaking flowchart to start a game of 40K. Then mysterious objectives. Ugh, it's a bit much I feel. Way too much to keep track of and it slows the game down unnecessarily. I also don't really understand the random points value objectives. I guess they're trying to encourage movement or something? But what's going to happen is one player will get a pregame edge over another (possibly a 5 victory point edge - right, Robyn? Wink ). This is fine for fun games, but if I drove several hours to a tournament, stayed up all night painting, then ended up drawing some asshole who started with a 5 victory point lead I'd be pissed.

That was the first time i had that happen in a game.

In retrospect though.. I really think we would of deployed objectives differently if we didnt know the sides we were starting on or deployment type. I would of definitly placed one or two towards the middle in case of hammer and anvil deployment.

But yeah.. It is a bit much.

Well that was what I never understood when people used to harp how 40k was getting too "streamlined". All I can say is that I'd like a game not to take more than 2-3 hours. Also I agree with Random =/= fun all the time, especially in a Tournament setting (brainleaf fronds for the win right Tom?!)

I'm still waiting for Lore to post up those stories. I know we weren't the only ones to write them up, and I am really looking forward to reading the ones for the "mysterious river" table where the river mysteriously did nothing.

I feel bad for Jody, when we played on the mysterious river table it goofed him up good (we rolled up the fire one where it counts as dangerous terrain). Nothing like playing against tau with a big line you don't want to cross in the middle. He was a really good sport about it though. I might have been a bit crass in his shoes.

Dangerous terrain isnt as bad as last edition.. You take a wound on a 1 and still get a regular armour save.

Was he playing grey knights?
