I like terrain fairly symmetrical with a big LOS blocker in the middle. Gives assault-y armies a bit of a chance to close. It think symmetry is even more important now that different types of terrain grant different cover saves. For example, if there's only a ruin on one side of the table that side is advantageous. If the ruin is then bolstered it can be a game-changer. If both players put a little thought and effort into the terrain setup it generally makes for a much better game.

while i like the terrain to be fairly semetrical i actually like the random terrian per quadrant. it gives you some randomness to keep things fresh from game to game. but with some thought the terrain generally ends up fairly even with choosing different sized terrain. (for example if one rolls three you can put some smaller pieces and another rolls one you can use a large one there, ends up about the same but "feels" different)

I'm a fan of 4/5th ed style. 1/4 of the board, equally split between LOS blockers, cover save grantees, and stuff that does both.

At least one LOS should be big enough to hide a land raider.

If there is one thing 6th messed up, it's board setup. The amount of terrain (particularly LOS blockers) affects the game in a major way. And their system takes forever.

Another problem they have: estimating avg terrain size as a foot square. Measure their terrain. It's closer to 80-100 sq in. This mean between 3-4 pieces of each of the above terrain.

I've seen and used the system Tim's describing. It's a quick easy balanced way to setup terrain. That said it can occasionally be a bit bland or boring. I try to use that system while making it look cinematic.

I set every table up the same way..as balanced as possible.for both sides.. Some area terrain, ruins, and then some debris scattered around.

Its probaly a bit above average than normal but not limiting by any means. Still room for driving around if needed.

Mark, what we played last friday was how i typically setup a.table.. Was it.about average or above average?

the 6th set up rules are cumbersome just due to the fact that games take so long in 6th already. if time wasn't an issue, I'd say that they are fairly balanced. cant complain that your opponent screwed you over with terrain placement if you did half of it, and made sure you put that ruin in your deployment zone.

I'm pretty OCD about setting up the perfect "starcraft" mirror boards. i generally do this diagonally though, so it doesn't look as symmetrical when your standing on your side of the table.

I find the proposed order of 6th ed to be odd

Roll for mission, deployment, and side, then, knowing what side you are on, place forts, then place terrain.

I am partial to last ed --> place terrain, then roll mission and deployment, then go.

I like when terrain matches, is mostly symetrical for fairness, and with a few at least 1 good LOS blocker that is flat-topped so models can stand on it

One of these days I would love to play on a fully sculpted board. I also lean towards setting up terrain before the rollings of dice.

For Beau's hypothetical tournament in the Spring, I might bring my table down.

We would likely have 2 scupted boards. Mark's trench table and the ravine table at the den.
