Trouble with magnets Empty Trouble with magnets

Post  Planes Tue Oct 02, 2012 9:15 am

Some time ago someone was having issue with getting their magnets out of a dread. I now find myself having the opposite problem, as the body side magnets do not want to stay glued there. Do I need to go up from Gale Force 9 glue up to a cement or some such?

GF9 glue is a CA glue just like the other stuff. if youre mags wont stay in place on the body, you'll have to either strip the paint from that spot so its bare plastic-to-mag when glued on, or countersink the mag by drilling just deep enough for the thickness of mag your using to sit flush. if you countersink them, you'll never have problems with them falling off.

could you post a pic or two when you get home tom? might help us figure out whats going on. the only other suggestion i might have is using a bit of epoxy around the outer rim of the magnet so when its sunk in place it forms a seal and is then epoxied in place. would have to sit for 48 hours though since it takes quite a while to cure.

Luckily, today's shift is 1-9.

Pictured: the dremelled recess made for the magnet.

Pictured: the magnet that should be in said recess (currently hugging it's partner). Jed and Matty are like children, being ENTIRELY too enthralled by the concept of detachable arms.

It may not help in this case. but sometimes i find that it is helpful to double up on your body-mounted magnets. try to get one on the inside of the dread/tank/what-have-you. i think your past that point here though. best plan is to "roughen" the area around where you intend to glue, set your magnet (i find the Krazy Glue with the brush works best) and then let it set for a few hours before applying any force to it with the other magnet.

And yeah. the Crazy Glue brush-on stuff seems to work the best for this. if you look on the back of any krazy-glue bottle, it will have a scale of how well it works on certain products. generally the glue you drop on has only 2 for metal, but this glue Trouble with magnets KG988 has a three rating for plastic, metal, and wood. it rarely lets me down.

Yeah, the inside magnet isn't happening, largely due to the fact that the base Dread I am working on came assembled, being second hand. I will keep that in mind for future Armor, though.

I think we just got a shipment in of something of the Krazy Glue ilk at work, but I am not sure if any of those are of the brush kind. I'll have to take a look.

another thing you can do is if you have a thin plasticard, cut a piece that will fit over the point after the magnet's in place, and use that sheet to cover it up; this will break the strength of the magnet's polarity just enough to keep the arm from pulling the shoulder magnet out of place.

in a pinch, i've found even just some white glue and a strip of normal paper can even accomplish this

how long between glue and using magnets are you waiting? sometimes the outer layer of glue is dry but internally hasn't finished yet. this might be what is happening. also how much weight is the glue supposed to be supporting, it might just be fatigue from holding the magnets and the arm on. I havent done anything so large as a dreadnought so im a little out of my depth.

It was specifically stress induced by Matty and Jed going "arm goes on, arm comes off" over and over, like they've never seen magnets before.

Idiots.

If your using a crazy glue or any other type of cyanoacrylate.. I highly reccomend using an accelerant.

You can glop on the glue, then the magnet. Give it a quick spray and it will start to set instantly. If you give it a good hour, it should be fully.set. Youll have to hold the magnet in place or balance it so it doesnt move.. But once you spray it a touch.. Your done.

But yeah.. You must not be waiting long enough. The sponsons and dread arms ive donw havent even been reccessed, i tend to just put them on level on the plastic and theyve never came off. Sinking them should make them stronger Unless theyre uneven.

If you are doing "level"like a disk magnet on the the surface, go with what Robyn said.

Recessing them in is a little more more, but it holds stronger. DO NOT use accelerator on it if you do, just let it dry overnight.

If you are magnetizing a Black Reach dread I'd recommend surface/disk. They don't hold up to drilling very well.

I have no idea where in town would have an accelerant, but I could just as easily let it rest over night with an application of krazy glue.

The Den has it, and Hobby World.

If I am not mistaking the smell, WD-40 would likely be the same thing.

I am not a fan of accelerates. I tend to be somewhat hard on my models and from my experience it tends to make the super glue significantly more brittle and likely to break. It has been years since I used one though so perhaps its not as bad anymore.

Used some Via stuff they sell where I work. The package says it "dries in seconds", but I'm letting it cure over night just in case.

I love the accelerant.. I bought one can about 5 years ago and have never gone through half. You dont need it as much anymore since resin and plastic tend to get tacky faster.. but for metal its ideal.

I did use it recently for a few weapon swaps I had to make and the plastic wasn't drying quick enough.

Ive never had a problem with it being brittle though, or at least I've never noticed.

to be fair its been almost ten years now since i used some (ah high school). perhaps it has changed since then or because it was the cheapest stuff available it was just poor quality (the glue and accelerant).
