Tooncon

Post  Roland on Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:57 pm

"will be held again at the ACT Hall, September 29th & 30th, 2012.

Registration has begun!
The costs are:
$20.00 for Saturday, $15.00 for Sunday or $30.00 for the entire weekend!
Early bird registration (before September 15th) for the entire weekend is only 25 bucks. Registration for the miniatures games will be 20 for Warmachine, Warhammer, Warhammer 40K & Flames of War. Half of the prize money will go to the tournament for prizes."

40k is on Sunday (the 30th) from 9:30 to 6pm. No other details yet.

My guess, off the cuff, thats 8.5 hrs, or enough for 3 games with a 1/2 hrs or so between games. (15 min setup, 2 hrs to play, 30 mins for overruns and breaks. 15 shutdown at end) which is saying *1500* points. I can see 2000 being crammed in there, but it'd be tight.

No idea who is actually organizing this.

The $20 is for the mini games only, you can't pick to enter 40K AND sunday.

I saw that they have a max of 12 players for the event. 16 for FoW. I don't understand that. I don't think they have anyone running this event yet.

Randy: ACT Hall in Sutherland

Ryan: Yeah I noticed that. Honestly feel they'd be better off @ 1000 pts/24 players/4-5games myself but hey, I'm not running it. From the way they SEEM to want it run, they should be trying to get as many players as possible (Grand Tourney-50+, of course, I'm not sure we have that many tables or that much terrain in the city.)

After last year's debacle for prizes, I'm not going. I sent them
A message saying I was out, and my reasons. I wasn't impressed with their organization, and I felt the 40k players were marginalized for better prizes for other games the organizers were interested in.

I havent heard a peep.. Although they know how i felt about it last year.

I hope they aren't going off the assumption i was just gonna agree to do it forever. I have a funny feeling a week before the con they'll send me an email.

If someone would like to organize it though.. Im sure theyd be happy to have a volunteer.

Lso There is a liitle blurb up on the site saying .. I believe half or so of the registration will go for prizes.

After weeks of no responses from questions i asked.. And finally updating the website with the rules i created a week before the event.. I was a little pissy when at the half way point i asked about prizes and was told to take a collection from the players.. Awesome.

I want to see 40k at a miniatures con.. I just dont feel to energetic about doing it again.

Question: If we WERE to try and run something other than at the den, or for more players... How many tables could we run?

From experience the den has about 6-8 tables max (the terrain starts running pretty thin after that)

Between myself, Dan, Robyn and Mark that 5 more, including terrain (6 as soon as I throw together another table.) That said, both my tables and Dan's need painting.

That's 12-14 tables, 24+ players. Any others?

I've got 2 tables (one my own, one Scott's) and terrain for a table and a half (maybe both).

The awsome thing about MacGuires was that Darren used to get it for us for free AND we had a dedicated bar and server.

Why am I picturing a 40k drinking game tourney?

"Ok that triggers a morale roll and a shot."

"Kharn hits on 2+ and forces you to take a shot."

"Mindshackle scarabs. Jager-bomb."

"I'm playing Grey Knights w/ Psycho grenades. Here's a bottle of rye."

I remember walking through one of those tournies at MacGuires as a wee gaffer, I'd love a chance to play there although last I saw they changed it into a night club or some such. Might still be worth checking out though. Hell I have plans to build a table too, so I could contribute.

We used to have a almost bi-monthly tournament held in the upstairs of MacGuires on 8th Street. Usually had a 20-30 person turnout with attendees from Calgary, Winnipeg, and other cities. Last one was probably 10 years ago.

While I am not really defending the prize support at ToonCon as I know little of it I will stand up and say that for years Saskatoon players were spoiled as Robyn and Myself kicked in a lot of the prizes ourselves from stuff GW gave to us personally. Running an event has a lot of hard costs attached to it. Maguires is a great venue for a friendly tourny and I think the rent is only $150 a day even if Darren is unable to get freebies from them anymore. Even then though if 20 people attend at $15 a head it's only $150 in prize support if you gotta pay full price for everything. Just sayin'.

If that's the case, then $20.00 or $25.00 per head seems reasonable enough. $150 to rent the upstairs room at McGuires seems like a damn good deal actually, and it's a nice enough venue. I recall a few tournies held there WAAAY back in my 3rd ed. days.

Way back when I ran tournies in PA, we had an admission of $25.00. That seems a bit steep, but this buys you lunch ( I had giant trays of deli sandwiches ordered in) and we had large amounts of prizes to give away. Nobody ever really complained about the entry fee, also because on the signup poster I would detail what your money was getting you. It's a hard fact that costs will go up when you run tournaments away from home base.

Scott: The issue (at least to me) wasn't a lack of prizes, it was lack of info about what to expect. Robyn asked about it and they gave him the runaround, then finally said "You're on your own" day of.

Ben (and others): I somewhat feel we've made a nice comfy little hole we can't get out of. If we want to run a larger event (say 25-50 ppl) you can't run it at the den. So you end up renting out. 150-250 for the day would be average from what I've looked at. Then we have to move tables and terrain (on the morning of the event!) setup, run the event, break everything down, take it back. Somewhere between $5-10 of any entry fee is going toward the rental hall and you're relying on several people to step up and help with everything (also people would likely be lending tables and terrain). I'd love to see something that size run here, it just seems very daunting to look at.

You'd be looking at around $25-30 entry, lunch provided, and you'd have maybe $375-$1350 in prizes. 1st-3rd, best sport, best painted, best general.

I think a 25 person tournament is doable. Past that I'd be worried about getting enough tables etc.

It would of been alot different if we knew ahead of time. We could of added on $5-$10 and got something.

That was the best things about the Grey Knight program. At the very least.. if you knew prize support was going to be lean.. you could just grab something from your personal stockpile and reorder later if needed.

Darn you GW messing with our plans!
