(I love how the narrator says it looks like lots of terrain, if you're used to playing me you may know I like an excessively excessive amount of it)


Allow me to armchair general/theoryhammer here, as a long playing Tyranid and Deathwing player I feel I am in a unique position to mock and deride you. In jest, and all due respect, of course. (This is how I would have played it, other players may have other ideas)

Armies:
Ultrawing: Good, solid looking termie army, Beau! Everyone painted, good mix of stuff. (I approve of not having an army of TH/SS cyclone terms, as it is boring and uncreative)
Tyranids: You call that 2000 points of Nids?? (snicker)

The Game:
From our conversation the other day, you did indeed botch the game right on deployment, I'm sad to say. Your objective also couldn't have been any worse, being right on the edge where Genestealers hopped up on PCP and Redbull coladas would be coming in. In a DOW scenario, Deathwing can be quite nasty. I would have deployed Belial and 2 troops as far forward as safe to do so, without exposing myself to being assaulted right away. On turn 1, DWA in another squad of termies close by, giving you 3 termie squads to control the center of the board, while the rest come in up the middle, so they can't be outflanked by the outflanking genestealers on your flanks. You had enough firepower to kill Swarmlord in one shooting phase on turn 1, but you spread out your shots. This makes Ben a sad panda. Sad When dealing with big guys focused fire on the move is your friend. Actually that's just a good thing in general with DW. Shoot them until they all die. CC wise you only really wanted to avoid Swarmlord and Trygon, they can demolish a termie squad single handedly. Also the 'roided up genestealers. Those need to get shot. The Tervigons and Tyrannofex are not that good in CC and are I1, and will go down to a good fisting without much issue. Even easier if you shoot em up a bunch before charging, it's the only way to be sure. Termagaunts die in droves to post combat suicidal tendencies, I'm all too familiar with this disorder. If you get a good chance to kill a tervigon who has a bunch of gaunts around him, take it Vindicator didn't really have any super juicy shots early game, but it's usually better to shoot at the big mobs, just to do more wounds and it's harder to miss.

Extras:
I won't comment on what could have transpired, I don't like doing that, only what I saw. Also, when your command squad takes a smattering of shots, put one on Belial to reduce potential casualties to the unit. (I call him Captain Plasma Sponge for a reason!) I think that's everything, and I only now just realize I've told you how to beat my Tyranids with your Ultrawing, but oh well! Learning experience for everyone. Cheers!

From my point of view: (Ben hit most of it)

I have no idea why I didn't realize he had outflanking genestealers until the top of turn 2. At that point I was playing for the draw and trying to get one of the two piles of Nids out of the way before they came on. It might have had to do with the fact it was freezing there (heater had gone out, he played the whole game in a coat). Ben's right to a degree if I had deployed differently, Matt makes different moves, etc. If I had to do it over again I would have made my obj the bastion in the middle.

I had a few questions about a few of the cover saves but looking thru the videos my memory was off. They were valid. Once I realized I needed to get out of that corner I should have brought the 4th Termie squad there and pulled the one assaulting his objective back (which would have given the Vindi a clear LOS) but oh well.

Terrain was actually decent. I know you would have preferred more "dressing" en, but it was adaquete. Certainly better than the bowling balls they've been playing.

Matt was a rather fun guy and I should mention he gave me $20 in merch just for playing him.

Ben: this is the part where all the guys with unpainted armys get put on notice. The Vindi, 18 of the 20 termies and the Crusaders sponson were primed Blue, that's it when I flew out. All the painting was done over about 10 hrs Sunday and Monday (total). Those termies actually have 3 color on them, period. (Ultramarine Blue, Astronomicon Grey and Chainmail.) You can get a 2000pt army on the table, looking decent with less work than you think.

And lastly. My Battlefoam bag when thru checked luggage twice, and total losses/damages were 3 Smoke Lauchers. And that was my fault as I overstuffed the bag.

I'm having to laugh at the comment to the video on MWG. They keep going on about my crusader shooting after moving 12" (it can), or my disembarking the termies (the bases are within 2"), or assaulting the swarmlord (um at that point it was assault or be assaulted the next turn).

NO ONE has mentioned my choice of objective.

Wow, I'm having a chuckle at the expense of the MWG comments. We all play the same game, right?

Note that actually allowing yourself to be assaulted by Swarmlord wouldn't be BAD exactly....
I mean, he is the avatar of the Hive Mind, and the most independent and intelligent Tyranid creature out there, but he does not have frags...

I post the link here, and get some subtle, well-deserved ribbing for my bad play, and plenty of constructive criticism.

It gets posted to B&C, and I get much of the same.

On the MWG page, I am basically attack for playing a counts-as army, accused of cheating, and people are so focused on nit-picking possible "rules you got wrong" they miss the obvious reasons the game turned out the way it did.

It's giving me endless hours of amusement:)
