Scratch Build Project

So after playing toms all drop pod list I decided I really want to play something similar.

I found some templates to make a drop pod out of foam board. I got one built and was wondering what everyone thoughts on it were.



Just a front view of the side that fit best.



Next to a GW pod it is about the same height.



The width on the other hand is a different story. Its a few inches in diameter wider than a GW model.



This is one of the sides that was not lined up as well. I think if I took more time I could make them a lot closer.

All in all I dont think it looks too bad. Its not as well done as I intended, the doors were such a pain in the ass, but its acceptable for my first one. There are a few more details to be added. some strips up the side and what not.

The main things i am wondering is if you guys would be okay playing against these things in any type of game. It is wider so I don't think it should be to much of a problem. The only issue is that the doors do not open.

that template you used turned out bigger because it's intended to represent a dreadnought's drop pod. that's also why it only has the 3 fins instead of the usual 5. no one would begrudge you fielding it, but since it happens to have a larger surface area that it covers when it touches down, that might hurt you in deploying troopers out of it, since it'll have to land in areas less crowded or suffer mishaps and scattering and all that fun fun stuff.

you did a nice job of putting it together; i know that template and had made one myself using it as well. i don't have mine anymore though, since i can't find many people who weren't terrified of facing a lucius drop pod. but now that it's even more expensive to field and forces a difficult terrain test before attempting to assault out of the lucius pod, maybe i'll try to make a pair for my ironclad twins.

I do know the templates are from the forgeworld dread drop pod. I would never play it that way, its horribly broken. It would just be a stand in for regular drop pods. As far as scattering goes drop pods never mishap so i'm not to worried about it being bigger.

How did building yours go? What did you do for folding the doors in? That was really tricky and took the longest out of it all.

i'm guessing you're using card stock to print the sheets?

i used that on mine and then lightly scored the sheets along the lines where i needed to fold it so that the paper would be more willing to fold how i wanted it to. just be careful not to cut through the sheet; just go hard enough to actually see the blade mark the paper and that's all it'll need.

also, before you spray paint the model, take the time to put some thin strips of masking tape, or use some white glue and cut strips of paper to cover the exposed foam sides on your fins; from the looks of it you probably noticed that spray painting the exposed foam causes it to melt crinkle and shrivel away from the paint. the one i made i used simple masking tape and that does a great job and as long as you're careful not to get folds in the tape when you put it on, you cant tell its tape once you paint it.

oh, and if you're still worried about the size, just print the sheets at...85% original size, and that should shrink the model down to the same foot print. or if you're a little OCD, then measure the bases of the two, find out the difference in percentage, and tell your printer to print the sheets down by that much.
