Painting Necrons/General Painting Question Empty Painting Necrons/General Painting Question

I have never painted a mini before. I have helped a friend assemble his Black Reach box, but that was just snap together and gluing. Thus far I only have one true 40k fig to m name (bunch of 'Crons are still stuck in the US postal system). However, despite all of that, I'm going to eventually have to paint all these buggers if I want to get in on some play outside of my Lego Grey Knights or mooching Adam's Chaos.

I was wondering what general tips people might have. I know from some painting vids I have spotted on YouTube that it is not uncommon to put a million layers of paint on a miniature. How many layers of paint do people around here usually use?

Finally, I did have a general idea for a color scheme I would like to use on my 'Crons once I do get my hands on all of them, and I figured I'd run it by you guys to see what you all think. Pardon me if I don't know all the GW paint colors yet.

Base coat of Black (gun metal black?).
Select mid-toning with a dark navy blue, generally on capes or anywhere insides are showing.
A dark blue wash.
Red line work.
Gloss finish/seal.
Once all that is nice and dry, glue and pop in red rods.

Kind of shooting for a Tron-ish look. Yes, Nectrons.

Chaos black base is what I use.

Doesn't work so well on the resin though. I found with resin, an undercoat of Deneb stone works well.

On my Trazyn model, I did an undercoat of Mithril Silver, washed it, did Deneb stone on anything I didn't want metallic, did a mix of armor and blue washes, then dry brushed the washed parts of the model. It looked fantastic.

Careful that you don't put on the layers too thick, and start with a single warrior or scarab and refine your scheme as you paint it.

Do what works for you and don't try to copy the Games Workshop guys.

After about a dozen or so models, you'll get the hang of it.

As someone else posted in another thread here.

The single best tip anyone can give you is to water down your paint a little and put your paint on in thin layers, two layers of thin paint is always going to look better than a glob.

Painting Necrons/General Painting Question Empty re painting rons

The GW chaos black is probably the best base coat ya could get. Once you try it you won't go back. Dry brush as much as possible, don't smother the thing. Inks on necrons generally work well might have to use two or more coats to get that sharp look. And my number one suggestion is don't look at the box. Make them your own. Try different techniques. If your just starting to paint don't think your a Leonardo from day one. Crash a couple times and learn.

For basecoating, I have a few choices I like depending on the look I want. If you want a nice matte black undercoat, GW, or my preference of army painter black are best. If you want a satin or semi-gloss black, the P3 black spray. If you have an idea for a color your models will predominantly be, the look at the army painter sprays; they make 16 of the most common shades people basecoat their armies in as a spraycan that's both your undercoat and your basecoat all in one. Just a tip when you use them though; you will notice they 'seem' to be thick when the paint sprays on wet, but as it dries, it tightens up and leaves a nice smooth finish. But make sure you shake the can for 5 minutes before you use it to make sure the pigment is nicely mixed. And every 2 or 3 shots, shake it some more to keep it nicely mixed.

I lile Army Painter too, but they don't have a dark blue (Navy Blue is currently the darkest, same color as the Tank like on the Desert Convoy table @ the tourney, they are about to replace it with a lighter shade, Ultramarine Blue). If you want to go the spray route, 2 suggestions:

1) Basecoat black w/ spray or whatever, and look at Krylon Plastics. There's a pretty decent selection of colors and I've had luck with them. (Not in this weather tho. Should mention that. DON'T SPRAY IN COLD WEATHER)

2)Possibly an spray gun.

Honestly, I'd just prime them Chaos Black. Hit the stuff you want blue w/ Regal or Mordian Blue. Hit the red line work w/ Merchite Red. If you're going for a "glowy" effect from the blue innards (that's the impression I got from your post) drybrush a little Enchanted Blue or Ice Blue over the basecoat blue. Add a little Shining Gold or Mithral Silver as an accent on rune and such. All brush work, but it's simple and gets them painted and on the table. After you get a unit of 5 or 10 done, you can look at ways to speed up the process.

Enchanted Blue and Ultramarines Blue paint over Chaos Black quite well.

I'm not so much going for a glow with the blue as noticing that in the aesthetic of the newer Tron stuff that the base isn't pure black. Anywhere that looked more mesh or scale on the suits seemed to have a mildly blue hue to them.

From the sounds of things, though, I should wait for things to warm up and use P3 black spray as a base, though GW black could work just as well for testing out intitial paints.
