Im not sure if anyone has experience with airbrushing, but i finally got my hands on one and i am looking at different techniques. One thing that i want to do is use the airbrush to mist mineral spirits over artists oil paints. I know that you can run mineral spirits through an airbrush, but what i cant figure out is if i can use the same airbrush for acrylics again afterwards. I know that you should not mix acrylics with mineral spirits, but since mineral spirits are a petrolium based product, how would i clean the residue out of the airbrush so that i could go back to spraying acrylics with it again after. I looked through CMON but could not find an answer. Thought i would ask here first.

I'd suggest running lots and lots and lots of water through it, it'll eventually force all the oil out of it.

If you use a water base product us water. For oil based product use a good paint thinner. I used mine mostly for camo on tanks so I don't have much experience with your mineral water.

??????????

Anyway....

Shouldn't be a problem so long as it's good and clean after. Just dissassemble it and scrub it down. Mineral spirits should evaporate pretty thoroughly anyway. What technique are you going for? I haven't seen one that sprays mineral spirits on a mini and I am interested in checking it out.

What model of airbrush did you get?

@Scott
Its a weathering/rust technique that they put in the imperial armor painting masterclass book. Its based on the use of painters oils, which i know you have done before. The variation on it is that you use a bush to flick on little specks of oil paint mixed with weathering powder. Then rather than washing it with a paintbrush you mist on the spirits, which makes the specks diffuse, creating what looks like very real rust specks. Im sure there are several steps that i left out, but that is the general idea.

I actually got my airbrush from my pops. My mom bought him a really good one like a decade ago and he never used it. Not sure how it would measure up to todays tech, but it is double action which is the most important thing. Its out in the shop, ill have a look at it later when i head out. Taking it apart might be a really good idea, i imagine rubber seals and such will degrade over time, even if not used.

Oh yeah, I remember that. I think Ryan Glover has my book. It's a good one!

I imagine you'll still have to secure the powder to the tank after. I tried lighter fluid and it works OK, doesn't run when the whole thing get's sealed with dullcote.

Yea, its a super good book, actually worth the money from what i have seen. Lots and lots of great tricks in it, and wow do the models they have in there look great.

Not sure if this airbrush of my dads is really all that great. When i was in michaels earlier they had an elcheapo one for $35 made by badger. When i got home i checked the brand name of mine, and you guessed it.. badger. The book says bottom feeder(like Matt) internal mix, dual action. The model number is 175, says that the kit comes with different size spray regulators, tips and needles are quickly interchangable. There is more mumbo-jumbo, but i think ill just focus on the basics for now.

I picked something up at michaels, and as a result got a coupon for 50% off next week. Im thinking i might just wait till then and buy that cheap badger at 1/2 off and keep it for oil/petrolium work.

Not sure if you are getting the gamer forces mags brought in by Daren, but if you are, they came in today. I picked mine up, but havent looked at it yet.

I'll swing by and get my GF magazine then. I do like them pics!

Nothing wrong with Badger stuff for what you're doing. I bought a nicer brush ONLY because I was doing camo patterns on 15mm flames of war stuff. My Badger still works fine for spraying paint.

Do NOT buy the el cheapo badger sparay gun. You'll be nothig but dissapointed. Buy some pipe cleaners for cleaning and you'll be fine!
