Ubuntu 9.10

So I'm not sure if there's any linux users in our group but if there are I could use some tips. I recently switched my computer over doing a dual boot until I'm satisfied that I can cut the cord with Windows, however the biggest deal breaker is that Army Builder doesn't work in linux (Crashes at the splash screen through WINE). Looking around it seems like no ones found a solution, just wondering if anyone here had found a work around.

For now I've setup Sun's VirtualBox and installed my copy of Vista so that I can just boot a windows machine to run itunes and connect to my ipod etc, and run army builder.

Just wondering if there's a solution other then wait for Apple and Lone Wolf to make a portable version. (The biggest kick in the nuts is itunes, I mean OSX is built on netBSD, it's already unix code ffs)

History: I used to dual-boot Linux, only using Windows for games. I did this for about a year, maybe two years delving into such delicacies as Compiz/Beryl and all that fun stuff. I even had WINE setup with World of Warcraft and a few other games. But then... I stopped. As good as Kubuntu is, it's a PITA to try and get anything to work. It's gotten a lot better, don't get me wrong - I started with Hoary Hedgehog all the way up to Intrepid Ibex.

Since I stopped power-usering my computer and started power-gaming 40K, I simply have no need for Linux anymore since all I really use my computer for is internet and video games. I will say though, getting Xorg to work properly is a total !@#$ up the ass. Dual monitor, dual video card (GTX 295)... Xorg hates it all. Kubuntu also had issues with my hard disc setup and randomly forgot my personal drive a lot of the time which was where my home directory was (read: settings for everything), so it was simply not worth dealing with.


There's always the obvious choice of simply not using Army Builder but that's a no-brainer and a useless solution. If it doesn't work in WINE, the only other solution I know of is Crossover (or whatever that =I=censor=I= is - they stole from WINE so I don't recommend them at all; pirate that stuff!) and what you are currently doing, virtual machining.

Personally, because I have a Macbook I tend to use Excel a lot. It's nowhere near as flexible and definitely more time consuming, but it's really the only solution I have that works across all of my computers. I built a full-blown army calculator for Necrons but... as the least customizable army in 40K it really wasn't that hard. "How many warriors and immortals do you want to take?"

Solution: throw army builder in the garbage where it belongs!

well as someone who dual booted XP and Slackware for about 5 years, I'd have to say that Ubuntu has come a long long way for linux, which was my first opinion when I tried Hoary, but I mean 9.10 is well past Hoary, very very slick by comparison. I'm not looking for an OS argument however just wondering if someone had a better solution then my virtual machine.

And unfortunately not using Army Builder (or equivalent) isn't an option, I paid for it, I like it and I don't want to go back to making lists like a caveman.

I also started with Slackware for a bit, and Kubuntu in and of itself is more "idiot friendly", and indeed... it has some a very long way and is very slick

But honestly, WINE (or any of its unwanted bastard children) and virtual machine are the only two options available.
