high number of players, space restrictions, and multiple leagues? Empty high number of players, space restrictions, and multiple leagues?

Since we have the largest amount of members ever, I wanted to put forth a couple of ideas.

1) We have considered the ladder style league that the fantasy league uses in the past, but didnt really have enough people to use it. This is where you challenge other players for their positions on the ladder (as long as they are 2,3,4,5,6 (to be decided) spots higher than the challenger. The league playoffs would have the top 4 (or more) players on the ladder and the same number with the most points (regardless of ladder position).

2) I think we have enough players to get a few different league going:
-have the main league as is
- and have another one which could be a campaign, 40k in a flash, planet strike, city fight, or even apocalypse.
**The other league could have its game run on a different day, which should be easy since there are usually less players in a specialized league; to help with space issues.
And members could play in both leagues of course Wink

So what do you guys think about either idea, or other ideas of your own?

I'd have no problem with anyone wanting to run something else, but I definitely won't be able to. Ive got to much stuff on the go right now.

However, if someone wants to try something.. I's support them 100%. Planetary empires would be a good idea.. and the map could be kept at the den.

The only problem I see is that if members can play in both leagues, how does that help with one league being crowded? Won't the ones who want to be in the other just join it As Well?

I mean it does definitely sound like a good idea, and not just b/c I think a 'campaign style' league would be hella fun, but I am doubtful that it would help ease the load on the primary league. How many people do you suppose would migrate from the league to the campaign/secondary league?

I don't mean to sound argumentative, just trying to play devils advocate and bring up the questions.

I'd propose an alternative of just having two league nights, but that comes up with the same problem of "the ones who want to play a lot will just show up both nights"... besides, we allready have people scheduling a fair amount of games on other nights and wednesdays are still pretty busy.

Any other Thoughts/Suggestions?

In the past there havent been that many people who play both leagues. Many might sign up for both, but only play one game of 40k a week anyway. Also I meant the part about making space as secondary.

I was at the den on Thu. and the place was empty all night.

That being said, we might have to start thinking about something. The last couple leagues have seen a crazy amount of games being played.. and its forcing the guys who cant play that many games to just up and quit.

Ideas would be welcomed.

There is a solution to this, but its not a great one (in my opinion). Limit the amount of games for points per week i.e. 2. Putting a cap on games though is kinda silly since really its about fun.
I think the idea of having a ladder system like I mentioned in another post which moves the top people in points and the top people on the ladder into the playoffs should fix this issue much better.

As for space here is an idea:

We can have 6 tables going at once which results in 12 people getting games in. Unfortunately there really is only enough time for 1 game of 1750 in the 6-9 time slot (there is not quite enough for two). If we could get the Den to stay open until 10 we could do this:

time slot 1 5-7:30
- X12 people

time slot 2 7:30-10
-X a different 12 people

any other time requires no sign up (including early the same day as league night)

With 29 people on the league standings list this should solve the space issue assuming 5 people not playing every league night is well within the tolerance for amount of absentees.

** the den was open until midnight for the fantasy league and that was great for getting games in. I think it would be reasonable to offer this to Wednesdays now considering the size of 40k and the shrink in fantasy.

**Also I dont think it would be very healthy for the gaming group to split between two league nights.

Limiting games isn't really a nad idea. It doesn't prevent people from playing, just limits the amount of games that can be reported for points. I for one cannot keep up with the amount of games being played.

This issue has been raised before. People who are busy simply cannot keep up with the amount of games being played by those that do not have the same amount of responsibility. So essentially in a league this size, it is very possible that many people will be eliminated simply because they cannot play as much. Im not involved enough to know if this is happening or not, but it was something of a problem when there were only 12-15 people in the league.

LImiting the number of games reportable per week could actually work.. maybe 2 recon, 2 strategic, 1 control game each week @ Max? or something like that? I'd still end up playing as much as possible, as I'm sure would some others, simply b/c we love playing so much. Right now, there's no reason NOT to make it a league point match if we're both in the league and want to play anyways.

Well really I see the two issues (# of people who can play Wed evening, and multiple games/week) being important issues. For example you could look at it this way: Why can't the whole membership of the league be able to play on league night?
It really isn't to that point yet, but we could use some breathing room in regards to space and timing of games.

Also I would like to point out that the attraction to play on league night is to hear the tales of what is happening in the other games going on etc. To say it differently: Playing a game in the empty gaming room on another day loses some of the charm.

My personal favourite times are when there's about a half-dozen guys in the back, 2 or three games going and a couple walking around watching. Not crowded, but not isolated. When the back room is full of 20 people I don't know very well, My shyness kicks in and I tend to just sit at a table playing and drawing away from the crowd, which isn't as fun (Well, for me).

I ahve to agree that I do enjoy it when there's a healthy showing. You fele more motivated to bring painted guys, brag about your war stories, etc. I also dont mind a break once in awhile.

Me and Randy had a game last Thursday at the den and we were the only ones back there. It was nice and cool, not to hot.. and had alot of romm to put guys, kills, reserves, etc. Then we had a kick ass good game that saw me winning it on turn 5 or 6, but the game went to turn 7 and into a draw. Then, a minor victory for Randy as he got the secondary objective.

Is that Zack as in Ork Zak? If so, games against him are always fun. Smile

Back to the original topic, I had a question.

Back when we were first playing, before we found out about the league, Adam Tyson and I used to run campaigns, which I found very fun, and I think something like that would be very enjoyable. I've read a bit about the 'Planetary Empires' stuff on the web, and was wondering how enjoyable those who've played it have found it, and how exactly it works? Does it have a 'game master' who sets up scenarios, or is it a lot like standard 'player A fights player b' but the outcome of the battle affects the larger scale somehow?
