Penal Legion squad

Post  Administratum on Fri Oct 02, 2009 12:18 am

Hey all, what do you guys think of the penal legion squad? It would provide some cool modeling opportunities, but are they worth it? The abilities all look really good, not like the chaos possessed. Any thoughts?

Ive played one game with Guard in the new codex, and I had a squad of penal troops. At 80 points, it seems like a steal!

Now, I really think I need to use them again a bit to get the full benefits. They can outflank, which I like. Plus, they are stubborm so will more than likely be able to tangle something up for a long time. The game I played they rolled up gunslingers. They came in right behind a squad of 5 noise marines. I moved up close.. fired off my 20 lasgun shots.. killing nothing. Then, I basically had to assault since I was 6" away.. and I bet you can figure out how that worked. I think I did last until his next turn. End result, I killed nothing.

Now, thats the worst way to judge.. Imperial Gaurdsmen assault Noise marines.. I still think they have potential though.. Ive got almost 30 necromunda minis I bought to use as cultists for Alpha Legion before they were erased from the chaos codex.. so they make nice looking penal troopers. WIll they ever be worht it though? Probably not as much as some vets.. but they are a fun unit!

Its really how you use them. Still as fragile as guardsmen, but have an edge, sometimes. No special weapons in the squad kinda blows though. And I did not notice they could outflank! I guess that helps. I've used them all of one game, and they were slaughtered, but it was my first guard game, so I was being silly and running them at greg's flamer line. Mad

Which is truly sillier though.. running at flamers in a line.. or assaulting a group of noise marines?

I have to admit though.. they are both equally dumb. It's funny what you'll do when your used to playing with power armor.. In my mind I must of just hit the Khorne reflex and thought I could assault, roll some dice and win. Thats what usually happens..

Yeah, and I thought I was charging forward daemonettes Mad, its hard to change your mindset to weak regular joes instead of chaotic daemons or supermen.
